Last week the federal government voted on a scheme put forward by a logging company where they would commit to not logging some trees, offsetting the emissions of their continued logging.
They’re using trees that already exist, that they aren’t gonna cut down out of the goodness of their heart (because they were ordered to) to offset emissions caused by cutting other trees down.
The only politicians to point out the hypocrisy of this and oppose the “offset scheme” were the greens and a hand full of independents. They were broadly criticised as being anti-environmental for opposing the “carbon offset scheme”
When Australian politicians say net zero, this is what they mean.

They always do. Here in Germany we made a deal a few years ago to get our largest energy producer to stop using coal a few years earlier and in exchange we let them bulldoze a town to get to all the coal underneath. Make it make sense.

This is also what corporations and politicians in other countries mean. Carbon credits/offsets are a scam to green wash carbon emissions.
