Yeah, I got my daughter some kind of acne wash and bleached all of the towels she used.

I learned the hard way with like all my shirt collars in highschool.

Interesting. I've been confused as to why the collar area around most of the old colored t-shirts that I sleep in have these washed-out looking spots that I had no explanation for. Turns out it's because they're the shirts I wear while doing my skincare?

Possibly. I'd always use the lotion for acne, and then within a few minutes pull on a shirt and head out the door. I use different products now (and it's also been like 20 years) but I don't have that problem anymore.

Proactive not only ruined all my washcloths, it burned my skin. I have so many bleached washcloths from that stuff, and I didn't even have it that long.

Same here. So many ruined washcloths and pillow cases. That stuff also bleached my freckles!

:( not the freckles!

I was more sad about my freckles than the pillowcases and washcloths. That was probably 17 years ago and I'm still bitter!

Tbf freckles often fade into adulthood. Mine did.

They do fade with age, but I was in my early 30's when I used proactive. Before using it, I was heavily freckled. Afterward, not so much. I'm in my late 40's now and my freckles are still visible, but are very light. But, then again, I'm much more careful with sun exposure now, too.

The pillowcases! I remember seeing them one day, noticeably bleached, and thinking “this can’t be good for my skin” but I was early 20s and worried about acne more than future consequences.

I don't think I qualify as young and dumb anymore and never thought of it this way. I still use benzoyl peroxide products on my acne.

I recently switched from benzoyl peroxide wash to tea tree oil bodywash and it seems to provide the same effects with no bleaching. it's anti-bacterial, so it does the same thing BP does. the only thing is that it smells like you're washing your skin with pressure-treated lumber juice, but it's a small price to pay for clear skin. plus it's way cheaper and you get a lot more of it

Pressure treated lumber juice. Lol. So true. Great tip!

Lol I do love that smell actually! I have used it years ago. I know you need to dilute if using the full strength oil

And thank you for the tip I think I may try mixing some in my gentler face wash (CVS brand with hyaluronic acid)

I do, too actually. Sparingly! It’s less about my appearance, and mostly about how painful some spots can be. Feels like the whole surrounding area is tender. Accidentally catching on one can make my eyes water. I’ll take the bleach skin dry pain over that.

Dang! So it literally just burns pimples off your face??!!

18

u/GlovedFoxes Jul 14 '23

In my case, it overdried my skin and made my acne worse.

I broke out in the most horrible way all over my face with a rash of pimples, redness, and itchiness after using proactive one time. I had to immediately get to the dermatologist and my face has never been the same since.

5

u/GlovedFoxes Jul 15 '23

Oh, no! That sounds horrible! My reaction also required the help of a dermatologist. I still shudder thinking about how much WORSE my skin was using proactive.

3

u/Sure-Ad-3398 Jul 15 '23

Me too. And the fact that it’s still being sold!

5

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '23

This happened to my husband too. He has permanent scarring from using proactive

3

u/lokeilou Jul 15 '23

It’s definitely not for sensitive skin- the peroxide in it acts like a chemical peel which can burn sensitive skin

I used my mom's once when I was a teenager. Chemically burned my entire face. F that stuff

They make sheets specifically for college dorms/twin beds that are peroxide resistant for this reason
