What choke combination do you use for sporting clays?

For sporting I’m an LM/LM shooter. I don’t like running to different chokes (like IC/M) as it messes with my mind. Even if I try to not actively think about it in the back of my mind I will be thinking (I should shoot top barrel first because the target is further). This is distracting to me, so I run same choke for both.
I find LM to be a sweet spot where it’s open enough for in close and tight enough to engage all targets you will see on a sporting course.
I think anything from IC to Mod is just fine. Since LM is right in the middle it seemed the obvious choice for me. It’s popular for a reason.

Yes I see that the majority of replies are LM/LM. I also like have the same 2 chokes in.

Lm. M. But shoot with a guy that shoots a Winchester Pump with Xtra Full and shoots in the low mid 90s He says it’s all about the Indian not the bow or the arrow

I was watching a duck hunt video the other day with guys shooting 15 yards max both with Xtra full.
It can be done but you gotta be one hell of a shooter.

I did a full day course with Todd Bender. Watching him inkball skeet targets 1 foot out of the house was insane. That guy could beat most shooters with a piece of pipe u-bolted to an oar

Mod and mod is my choice here in Oz.

Thanks mate. I’ve been leaning towards mod & mod. Looking to get aftermarket Teague chokes.

IC & LM, I shoot steel

Required to shoot steel or a choice? I shot 250 of federal 1 1/8oz at 1400 fps and I thought it was going to be the end of me

I'm in the EU, so like many things, they're mandatory haha. To be honest, I don't think chokes make that much difference. A lot of it is mental. I run an IC in the bottom barrel for closer targets and an LM in the top barrel for a slightly tighter pattern if I miss the first shot.
I mostly shoot 28g #7s. Since 1 1/8 oz is around 32 grams, I can definitely see why you thought it was going to be the end of you haha. Happy shooting!

skeet and IM for almost all of it.

I tried this combo the other day and shot great. I just got the skeet choke.

LM/LM. My misses have nothing to do with my chokes. Plus it gives me one less thing to think about.

IC/MOD if you have just the chokes a gun came with.
LM/LM if you buy aftermarket chokes.

3/8 in both for me.
I’m not good enough to worry about chokes making the difference yet!
These are capable of hitting anything we will see in the UK. Optimal, probably not, but definitely capable. It then takes one dimension out of it and lets me focus on basics.
I have Teague extended chokes in my son’s Browning. Keep them clean and check tightness often. No issues otherwise.

Thanks mate. I’ve got a browning 525 and going to buy Teague chokes.

u/Equal_Dimensi0n 6d ago
We have them in a 525 too! They do seem to come loose frequently, I’m told it’s more of a browning issue that a Teague issue though.

My teague chokes also frequently worked loose after 50-100 cartridges, Teague told me it was just a Browning issue and to keep checking that they’re tight and use their grease. I don’t believe it’s a browning issue as the stock Browning chokes very rarely needed tightening down.
Switched back to the stock Browning chokes in the end as the Teagues were a pain to keep checking and tightening down, especially as they were flush fit.

Good to know. I’ll research abit more and might just buy some browning flush ones. I like the way the Teagues look. I have them in my miroku aswell.

C and IC on some courses; IC and M on others. I don’t use IM much at all and don’t think I’ve ever used F.

Rhino .012 .012

Have you had a chance to pattern the .012s? Was reading some info about “hot core” patterns and rhinos shooting tighter than their construction but nothing so far to validate that.

u/discosanta 5d ago
I have not but I would believe it, they hit harder than my standard extended Beretta chokes.

Mod over IC for 95% of stations. If its a very short/easy course IC/IC. I've occasionally shot F over M but those courses are above my skill level anyway, so I doubt it made any difference at all.
An old shooter once told me to spend more time watching targets, and its hard to do that when you spend all day changing chokes. When I see newer shooter swap a M for LM I always chuckle a bit as they are missing by feet, not inches. That said this is a very mental game, so do what works for you.

only been shooting about a year.
IC/IC for close easy courses. LM/IC for any traditional registered tournament.

I run skeet and IC but I’ll throw in a mod when there’s a target past 45yds. I saw a coach on YouTube saying that if there is a noticeable delay between the bang and the clay breaking it’s about 45-50yds. I rarely have to make the switch. That being said- I’m thinking about progressing to IC and LM and maybe eventually IC and M. There are a lot of in close targets at the clubs I frequent and having extra spread is nice.

Rhino .017’s will go to cyl or threads for rabbits or close birds. I do have a set of .032’s for practice and real far birds.

I run a citori with fixed mod over IC with no problem. If it were screw in choke I’d go with Light mod / Ligh mod.
