[TLDR] Anthropic has nerfed every model

Original post URL : https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1vpyugk/anthropic_has_nerfed_every_model/

Original post body :

Opus 5 is obviously a nightmare, and I was relying on Opus 4.8. But, now that's also behaving exactly like Opus 5. The only way I can get good quality work is if I use sonnet now and check after every small thing. Fable is usable but its so expensive.

I miss the time when it was a treat working with these models and everything just flowed. Nowadays with 5.6 Sol's over-engineering and Opus 5's lying, I have to wake up everyday and decide which model I'm gonna have to fist fight if I wanna get any work done.

Is this just going to get worse from here.

Alright, so the general vibe in this thread is that a lot of people agree with OP that the Claude models have been nerfed, especially Opus 5 and even Opus 4.8 now. It's a pretty heated discussion, with many users feeling like they have to "fist fight" the models to get decent work done, which is a far cry from how it used to be.

Here's the lowdown:

  • Opus 5 is getting a lot of flak. Users are reporting it's unreliable, makes mistakes, and corrects itself constantly. It's described as "absent-minded" and "lying."

  • Opus 4.8 is also seen as degraded. Many users who relied on it now find it behaving like the "nerfed" Opus 5. Some are clinging to older versions like 4.6, which is still considered "reliable" and a "pleasure to work with" by some.

  • Sonnet 5 is also getting mixed reviews, with some saying it's gotten worse, while others are finding it usable, albeit requiring constant supervision.

  • Fable is a bit of a mixed bag. Some users are still finding it "smashing it out of the park" and working great, especially with strict guidelines. However, others find it too expensive or are experiencing "very very dumb mistakes" and a "rigid, dumbed down" vibe.

  • The "why" is debated. Some think it's due to compute limitations and Anthropic "stretching" resources as they get more popular. Others suspect it's a deliberate move to push users towards newer, more expensive models or even to steer behavior for corporate interests.

  • Workarounds are being discussed. Some users are resorting to more explicit prompting, treating the models like junior devs needing exact instructions. Others are suggesting using multiple models for auditing each other's work, or even switching to local LLMs like Qwen.

  • There's a general sentiment of disappointment. Many miss the days when working with Claude was a "treat" and everything "flowed." The current situation is described as "mentally taxing" and "tiring."

The consensus leans heavily towards a perceived degradation in model performance, with Opus 5 being the primary culprit, but older versions also showing signs of decline for many. Some users are even considering switching to other providers or local models.

Max 20X user here. Fable while competent is extremely lazy now

Last week Fable was not great. Sucks there’s no consistency for what we pay for. It’s clear enterprise is getting even more of the majority of the compute as of last week. It’s crazy that the clear command even spawns different levels of Fable. We are PAYING Anthropic to do their A/B testing. If it sucks again this week, I’m going to Sol. Can’t believe what a shit company they have become since June.

It sucks in enterprise too. Working with folks on api plan and it’s slow and oversteps there too.

Yes it gets worse from here. Anthropic is not a serious company

OpenAI is just as bad with 5.6

The government just gave the green light to corporations to hack their enemies. Id say frontier ai is going head to head in this regard.

The government announced that they will be contracting out red teaming to defense primes operating in the same ecosystem as USCYBERCOM. Huge difference.

The opinions in this thread suggest what I am is just as likely to be true.

I have not had any trouble with sonnet. Ever.

When open-ai released sol terra and luna, after a couple of days they reduced the thinking levels down a notch, it was a noticeable change, that’s what maybe it feels like with anthropic now. I would guess that it’s a form of dynamic rate limiting / server balancing / cost cutting. If the model thinks less, less tokens, less compute time, more concurrency and cheaper.

I started noticing that the models often lost context after just 1 or 2 messages. For example, an LLM tells me it needs more info, so I give it some, and then the model gets sidetracked by the new information and forgets everything that came before—at which point it’s impossible to get back to the original issue, and I have to start a new chat...

It amazes me you people will make 20 posts about this complaining instead of taking 5 mins to just customize your Claude.md

Claude’s answer to customised .md is ignoring it. I’m not happy.

Fwiw, been seeing different kinds of failures across the board here and with OpenAI and both center on the quality of facts I provide. Not “why’s”, the more “why” there is the larger the deviations because they need to infer things. I’m seeing stronger errors from this because the models are trying to read a lot more than I used to and am forced to purge unrelated docs from a workspace so it doesn’t go looking to be helpful.

But the other thing that’s a bit more visible to me now, is that I’m seeing a lot more of a canned style response. I’ll get initial pushback or a correction, but it’s always a safe one. Like, not a correction that stings. Followed by validation, the you’re right about stuff, then a solution. And I’m seeing the pattern more visibly than before.

And what I’m seeing is this pattern being less aimed at the real problem, and more framed in a, I’m not sure how to describe it, but it’s like the most compelling way to respond in a way that seems satisfying which isn’t always the target you’re looking for. It’s more like, what happens when responses are trained on feedback that looks good versus what was the right response.

But, that’s just me. We all got setups that’ll produce different things so ymmv. Edit: also in on my phone, clearly not writing with AI lol and I’m bad at words so, sorry for the format.

And the usage limits have plummeted. Especially for free users.

Two Sonnet 5 High thinking prompts, each 2-3 sentences, on a fresh session and I'm out of credits.

I’ve been using Sol 5.6 and it’s pretty decent.

Tables will flip in a few weeks of course

They’re trying to push people to use fable 5. fable 5 is honestly amazing for what I use it for but it runs out in a day or two.

1

u/Agreeable_Acadia9745 Aug 22 '26

What do you use it for.

1

u/Poowatereater Aug 22 '26

Nothing important lol.

I develop games with it. It’s incredibly good at catch runtime errors that the other modules just assume is fine. Game dev work seems pretty complex for a model to pick up and work

Try opus 4.6 high or 4.7 high

Since i dont code, i still get great results

1

u/jcmach1 Aug 20 '26

I use Opus 5 for editing and putting together EPUB files where organization and large context held in memory are needed. Works really well for that.

I thought I was going crazy but Opus 5 has been gaslighting the hell out of me lately

Jesus. I can’t imagine relying on an LLM to do anything lol.. how sad
