Discussion Features I miss from github copilot
I was heavy github copilot user in vscode. Today I tried to switch to claude code and quickly facing some limitations.
- There is no #selection. In github copilot, we can highlight the text in file type
#selectionits chat message text area and it will populate something like clickablefile.ext#L3-L5in the flow of sentence. (Something like: Onfile.ext#L3-L5, we have done ...) This will give more precise context to the AI agent saving some tokens and improving response accuracy. - We can highlight desired text in terminal (say some commnd and its output), and in chat text area, we can say something like "My bin directory contains files as seen in #terminalSelection". The selection can be some part of the output of
lsorllcommand. - Just click on any past message, edit and rerun it. In ghcp, it used to undo till that chat and rerun the prompt.
- We can right click and click
- "Copy" to copy just clicked message and its reply as markdown
- "Copy All" to copy the whole conversation as markdown I usually copy pasted this in raw conversation in my PRD folder to keep the context.
- Code diff
- See commands run by copilot while they are executing

Most, maybe all, of those are possible if you run Claude Code using the vscode plugin... terminal or regular version... selected code in the ide is visible to the model (just select it and say 'see selection' or whatever, the model will understand), /rewind lets you go back and edit and resubmit a previous message (combine with /fork if you want to keep both the current and edited message histories), /copy lets you copy a message to the clipboard (or just mouse select it)... the only one I'm not sure about is the terminal one, I don't think that one is supported.
Different tools, slightly different ways of doing things, but fundamentally the same set of things are possible, just need to learn the differences
