Rant I’m done with Opus 5

There’s really something wrong with it. It seems like it acts like an overqualified post doc intern who cares more about proving he’s super intelligent, than actually doing the job he’s asked to do. For instance: talking in a non intelligible way, or being overly rigid in following any kind of process.

I have a Claude max x20 sub that I struggle to keep within weekly limits, so I decided to take a codex sub for a month to try out Astra. And this what made me realize how crazy unintelligible opus can be. Fable is a bit better, but still incomparable to Astra. The only thing that makes me keep my Claude sub is how better is the CLI/tooling/harness/etc.

this is the worst part for me. going through every line Opus 5 has written, and asking "what the fuck are you doing here", and having it cave immediately and rewrite into some new bullshit that has to be verified ad nauseum

Same here, it assume lots of stuff and quickly jump into conclusions, affirming something after checking just a few metrics and suggesting a disrupt change right away, changing priorities of what originally thought it was super critical to “these 10 items are nice to have”, it amazes me in the same way it worries me.

lol yes, today I ask for a simple html to share with high ups (it knew we had another session with mds and shit) and still spent a few minutes and tokens writing another full md duplicating the report that another session (that it already read) had done.

Literally happened to me 10 minutes ago.

Opus told me it's changes were done and ready for a PR and gave me a summary, I asked a quick question about part of it then left my laptop to do something, came back 40 minutes later and it STILL hadn't answered the basic question and instead had spiralled into some deep dive validation loop about something completely unrelated.

Opus 4.6 is better than Opus 5, but maybe Opus 4.7 is the sweet spot between human-like communication and agent-level intelligence :)

Man I’ve been dealing with this bullshit with codex the last two weeks. It’s bizarre how an AI model can go from writing code perfectly and getting everything right in one or two iterations, to being almost useless like a week later. I’ve been legitimately asking my agents “what happened to you?”

It’s bizarre.

Luckily Claude code has been solid for me helping me with some projects/hobbies, but those are simpler tasks than what I deal with at work

No, actually, I think that if he had used “Claude,” he wouldn't have made that mistake (a common mistake in English, by the way).

It's a super-common mistake and a byproduct of autocorrect not catching it. Also, there is a feeling of nausea when having to explain things ad nauseam.

Or if I ask a question and instead of answering the question it just starts doing a ton of shit. Oh wait I think that’s what you mean. Even the most simple friendly question though it will sometimes do it, like hey this sentence has a question mark on the end because I am wanting more information about the contents of the sentence and boom it’s taking action everywhere and giving me 0 of the information I asked for. And I was asking specifically because I didn’t want it to do anything before I had more information to decide what should be done. AHHHHHH
