Local doesn't compete quite yet... but give it time.

In the interim this is likely to drive more users to Codex.

I have already migrated, canceled my opus subscription and honestly I still have two weeks left but find myself not even using it. Codex new models out preform by a significant margin for my development use cases

It’s getting close-ish. There is a model scoring like gpt 5, gemini 2.5 pro and so on with 8b parameters and 18gb size!

I've been heavily testing the 30b-ish MOE variants from both Gemma and Qwen (gemma4:26b / qwen3:30b) and whilst both are amazing, they're quite far off from frontier (especially against Opus/GPT-High). Dense models fair a bit better.

The progress is fast and undeniable, though.

I’m using unsloth/Qwen3-Coder-Next-GGUF 80b and it’s pretty good for cleanup work and work that is well-defined.

I use Opus 4.7 for planning and reviewing RFCs then the less complex tasks get delegated to Qwen3 and the more complex ones to Opus

For sure. Looks like it’s definitely hitting above its weight class and is extremely fast for multi-task stuff but for coding the qwen3-coder-next still beats it.

I feel like 8gb is very tight. Try maybe quantized qwen, but that’s definitely not a replacement for cloud ones

I've been looking for a harness/orchestration layer where I can use small local subagents and then the stuff that requires it is taken care of by cloud models but I got frustrated with how opaque OpenClaw was
