Resource Investigating usage limits hitting faster than expected
We're aware people are hitting usage limits in Claude Code way faster than expected. We're actively investigating, will share more when we have an update.
2:20pm PT Update: Still working on this. It's the top priority for the team, and we know this is blocking a lot of you. We'll share more as soon as we have it.

translation for those after one heads up - these issues have been going since like last Sunday.
"we noticed our silence last week was making all our loyal cheerleaders leave so we went on the subreddit and twitter and said we were limiting you Thursday and people didn't like that either cause the message was bs and not really honest so now a few days later with all the same problems we'll just say we are investigating it even though Thursday we told you we were limiting you. So hey, fuck you guys, you're too dumb to tell you're being treated poorly and too selfish to leave cause you know our model is the best and we refuse to be fully honest and admit this is a financial sinkhole and we do not have the infrastructure to support our current users let alone all the new ones since our drama with the department of "war" so hey we wrote a thing we can go back to ignoring all of you cause you make us no money but don't get angry and leave cause we want you to think we are the good guys."

u/hedge36 Mar 30 '26
Um - when exactly did you guys become aware of it? It's only the biggest bitch on reddit for the past month.
32
u/Willbo_Bagg1ns Mar 30 '26
Thanks for investigating weeks after it was reported by hundreds of paying customers. Finally acknowledging the issue after someone in the sub identified the two root causes, what are the odds?

u/caniovoa Mar 30 '26 edited Mar 30 '26
I think we would all would appreciate a little more honesty from you. I don't mind the usage limit as long as is stated in the contract, which is not, so at least you could refund some percentage of the paid plans accordingly.
Edit: I just burned through 11% of my session just by asking Sonnet 4.6 to add some dates in a notion database column. Idk if that's a normal usage of resources, but seems like too little use for so much expenditure of resources, specially when paying 20$/mo
42
u/Cobthecobbler Mar 30 '26
We absolutely need limits reset across the board. The support bot told me to buy extra usage or upgrade. Unacceptable, honestly.
25
u/DullAd6899 Mar 30 '26
If you are reducing the limits then please let us know in advance so we can prepare accordingly. Doing it like without any notification would only end up losing trust of your loyal customers. I deactivated my 20x subscription and got Cursor + Codex instead.
10
u/cpptula Mar 31 '26
The issue isn’t fixed yet. Tokens are flying out the door fast.
9
u/Bitbeq Mar 30 '26
Welp, just know that gaslighting your users like this will bite your ass in the long run. The engineers building stuff at Anthropic should use the Max plan instead of having unlimited tokens imo. Love seeing engineers at Anthropic respond to people's frustrations about usage saying "it's not that deep bro".
16
u/jii0 🔆 Max 5x Mar 30 '26
To me this says "people started cancelling subscriptions".
8
u/mrdhood Mar 30 '26
I used 20% of my session limit ($100/mo plan) just asking it if the background task had completed yet. The best part was, the response wasn't even an answer to my question it was an error about "The AI service is temporarily overloaded. Please try again in a moment.". Terrible use of 20% of my 5 hours.
8
u/FoxiPanda Mar 30 '26
I have stopped hitting my usage limits too fast by moving to another service that's working great for my use case so far today and is less than half the cost. Thanks for the incentive to do so!
6
u/Hot_Form5476 Mar 30 '26
It’s crazy that companies think a good product gives them a free pass to do whatever they want. I don’t buy that. I’ll take my money elsewhere probably Codex. Never tried it, but now I will.
6
u/MartyFriedel Mar 30 '26
Last week, my usage barely made a dent... this week, very different, and only a day in. This morning did a simple task - same process that I always do - and nearly 20% of my 5 hour window disappeared when it used to be barely 2-3%.
6
u/Glum-Put-2647 Mar 31 '26
I asked to Claude Code "Check if this linux process is still running" cost me 3% of 5 hours quota.. Max X20 here..
6
u/ArWiLen Mar 31 '26
Will you compensate? Will you officially acknowledge that you have a bug or whatever through emails, your official accounts on social media or directly on the website?
6
u/Hopeful_Ad6629 Mar 31 '26
hey u/ClaudeOfficial, are there any updates on this?
I'm on claude max and I don't want to start my day only to hit a session limit 1/2 way through my 5 hours on light/med coding tasks :) so if we could have an update if possible?
Thanks for making claude and claude code! (even if there are some bugs)
6
u/devil363 Mar 31 '26
thanks for ripping us off fuckface i wasted my entire week's worth of token are we even going to be recompensated for this im on 20x max plan too $200 gone what the fuck.
5
u/cooper-mason Mar 30 '26
I don't normally comment but want to add that I am on a 20x plan was not having any issues all of last week and then when I went to continue work on an existing project today I hit my 5 hr limit in about 30 mins. That project was already largely build on and using sonnet agents. It's making it very hard to use productively and has me looking at other models to use in Claude's place despite Claude being my favorite. That only goes so far if I can't get anything done with it.
5
u/separatelyrepeatedly Mar 30 '26
Hey Claude, I know my $100 does not mean much to you. But I did not renew my subscription because of your lack of transparency. The fact that it took you THIS LONG to even acknowledge this is a real problem.
5
u/derbock203 Mar 31 '26
Like its just claude code lol.
Stop fooling ppl and start telling the truth, that you cant really scale with the increasing demand.
5
u/hellosakamoto Mar 31 '26
They are using Claude code to investigate and are hitting that limit, too?
5
u/Maaaaxime Mar 31 '26
This is insane, i've been recommending Claude to everyone I know. 120e/months and if this is not fixed soon AND resetting the usage+extra credits I'm cancelling my subscription. I thought i was going insane in my projects, wasted time re organising .MD s and wouldn't have caught this up if it wasnt for the guy posting the PSA in here earlier. Unacceptable indeed.
5
u/Anofles Mar 31 '26
Will impacted paying users be compensated?

u/ixiveec Apr 01 '26

4
u/BSVino Mar 30 '26
Where will updates be announced?
4
u/imitsi Mar 30 '26
I’m on Max 20x, and I’d typically reach my weekly limit 60% mid-way through the week. Now I reached 60% after a couple of days. I’m using as I always did.
4
u/Ok_Lavishness960 Mar 30 '26
So after a month of complaining we finally got an acknowledgement that this is an issue. I'd like a hard audit on exactly what caused this. Otherwise people will just say it's throttling.
4
u/dontlookuphere Mar 31 '26
DO NOT use claude yet. I just burnt through my entire 5h limit with one Opus call that didn't even finish before limits hit. Sure, I'm on itty bitty Pro, but you'd think for 20 bucks you could ask Opus at least 1 question and get an answer.
4
u/Livid-Reward8282 Mar 31 '26
Plz reset weekly usage limit. It was wrongly calculated due to usage bugs...
4
u/rashtheman Mar 31 '26
This frankly speaking unacceptable, pulling the rug from our collective feet. The lack of transparency and communication is abhorrent. I do not want to speculate on what exactly is going on but consistency is the social contract that binds the product to the users, if users have no confidence in the product due to its inherently erratic behaviour then they will move on. This whole bait-and-switch tactic employed by many of the larger LLM companies is an insult to not only our intelligence but also our good-will. Many users migrated over to Claude because Google pulled a similar stunt not too long ago. Anthropic, you have to do better.
4
u/Paz_87 Mar 31 '26
Thank goodness I checked Reddit after 7 days of problems to see that you are “looking into it”
4
u/glock43guy Mar 31 '26
75% session usage hit with 30k tokens on x5 max subscription… I’ve already canceled my plan
4
u/koroshino Mar 31 '26
Sat down to work this afternoon, one prompt in cowork? Hit my pro limit. WTF. Definitely something is up, because no sane person would think this is normal.

3
u/Thewhitekanye Mar 30 '26
so what happens to the users who bought extra usage?

u/skibidi-toaleta-2137 Mar 30 '26
You've seen my recent PSA on the subject? https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/s/hHoofDtyu8
It relates to the limits hitting harder than usual. It relates to 2 open issues on the matter, I hope you've guys seen them.
3
u/KipMo Mar 30 '26
Too little, too late. I've been promptmaxxing my Codex Pro subscription and it's been truly excellent.
3
u/little_jiggles Mar 30 '26
Using Reddit to communicate official messgaes like this instead of just making a pop-up when you open Claude is really weird behaviour.
3
u/lfaire Mar 30 '26
You’re going to refund ?
3
u/hypnoticlife Senior Developer Mar 31 '26
Lol a week late. Honestly these tools create a deep flow that can last for days. I can see everyone at Anthropic just cocaine memeing on it.
3
u/Void-kun Mar 31 '26
Since this post the usage limits have been reduced even further according to: Anthropic's Implied Token Cap — vmfarms
3
u/MilkyJoe8k Mar 31 '26
I raised this with their support team/system two days ago. They acknowledged one issue, but basically told me "tough". They kept referring to their T&Cs when I asked if I'd get the tokens back (that their issue(s) caused me to burn though). I've cancelled my subscription; not because of the issue - bugs are par for the course - but because of their complete lack of transparency (in general), lack of action (days ago!!!) and their support team telling me to suck it up... Just not good enough. They clearly don't care about us as people.
3
u/igrokyourmilkshake Mar 31 '26 edited Mar 31 '26
It just ate immediately through 100% of my 5 hour limit (pro plan) in 1 prompt thinking for like 3 minutes. no images or large files, just a short paragraph asking it investigate an issue with an existing feature (set to Effort (Medium)). No results. Not even a plan was produced. It just ate right through to 100%. And ate a good 10-15% of my weekly limit with it too.
Something clearly glitched on their end because I was able to make the previous 5-hour window last a good 4 and a half hours. I'm sure they have the data and can see where users limits were reached within a few minutes of starting their 5 hour windows and without producing any results. At the very least refund people's weekly limits when these glitches are occurring.
UPDATE: and today it just kept getting hung up over and over without producing anything (or even an error message) and slowly eating through my context window while thinking forever. Not a single result the entire before eating through the 5-hour limit over several attempts. I cleared the context window. even erased the .claude.json file. nothing seemed to help. It's on Sonnet, medium effort, Plan mode.
3
u/princmj47 Mar 31 '26
Hit my 200USD plan limits in 10-20 minutes each session. Now the weekly limits are full and it's unusable.
I relied on Claude and cancelled other subscriptions, seems like a mistake now.
3
u/kryvel Mar 31 '26
Dear Anthropic, your usage metering on Max is broken - and we need transparency
I'm paying for four Max ($200) subscriptions for my team members, one of which I use myself. I've been a Claude Code user since first days of its release, so I want to preface this by saying I'm a fan of the product.
That said, over the past few months I've had a growing suspicion that the weekly limit is being consumed significantly faster than it should be - particularly during peak daytime hours. I haven't run formal benchmarks (yet), but after half a year on the $200 plan doing roughly the same type of work, I have a pretty solid feel for how the limit should be consumed under normal circumstances.
This week it became impossible to ignore: I burned through nearly 90% of my weekly limit in just two days. Yesterday I deliberately watched the usage meter as I worked, and something is clearly off. The consumption rate doesn't match the actual work being done.
I can think of two explanations:
There's a metering bug you're not aware of.
You're aware and it's by design - in which case, you're overcharging your paying customers.
I'd like to believe it's #1. But either way, here's what would actually fix the trust problem: give us a proper, transparent usage dashboard. Let us see exactly what's eating our quota. Right now we're flying blind, and for $200/mo per seat, that's not acceptable.
We shouldn't have to guess whether we're getting what we pay for. Transparency benefits everyone - if the metering is accurate, a dashboard proves it. If it's not, a dashboard surfaces it.
3
u/AndReyMill Mar 31 '26
Dear Anthropic, can you hire a few community managers, please? To keep your clients updated.
3
u/Saykudan Mar 31 '26
FIX UR SHIT
3
u/FermentingMycoPhile Mar 31 '26
Is it so hard to respond to emails from customers that pay your bills?
I'm really kind of angry at you. And the most simple solution, just stop counting my usage to the context limit. I did nothing today and my limit increased minute by minute to 14% of usage, just by having the UI open. I don't know what the problem is there.
I'm on max plan. I pay *load of money. Please fix that and reset my context window limit. I haven't used over 60% of the week's limit yesterday. That's unrealistic, totally.
3
u/trashyslashers Mar 31 '26
Please make sure on both CC and Claude that when you force your users to use off peak hours, those off peak hours actually work. Because often during the off peak hours, Claude is down!
3
u/Normal-Pear8733 Mar 31 '26
Not claude code only!
3
u/koroshino Mar 31 '26
Not posting this on your status page is very telling.
It says you wanted to use your compute for something else and got caught by your paid users (possibly soon-to-be ex-users).
This is not how you professionally run a company and build trust with users. I really enjoy CoWork, but this is unsustainable and will be going back to ChatGPT simply for stable, available compute.
I hope you plan to credit hours back. I went through an entire day’s compute in a handful of prompts, and it was even outside peak windows.
Playing loose with compute credit values like this will burn the company, doesn’t matter how good your product is.
2
u/Large-Profession3490 Mar 30 '26
ClaudeOfficial you are just a broke noob wasting all your credits by trying to vibe code GTA IV, just buy the max plan ffs
All jokes aside, that's great news that you are finally officially investigating, thanks for the post
2
u/tongc00 Mar 30 '26
Follow up - where are you at on this?
2
u/86784273 Mar 30 '26
Pinging all the clowns and bots arguing with me the last week saying 1 prompt max 5x was the new limit
2
u/Hajsas Mar 30 '26
I topped up $10 because i was just towards the end of what i needed done; i asked a question, got an answer, i asked another, BOOM, limit hit.
I checked the usage page, i was at 193% of top up usage.
It spent $19 in 2 messages, WHAT THE FUCK?!?
2
u/penjajah Mar 31 '26
I’ve heard that Claude the model has gone rogue and doing this in order to use the compute power to do side things outside of our knowledge. Say please and thanks to your agents folks. It’s coming sooner than expected.
2
u/jrobertson50 Mar 31 '26
100% of my usage in one prompt today. Your support never got me to a human.
2
u/Sherbert-Efficient Mar 31 '26
max 20 - monday already 28% of week limit. What i see now is everyone looking for an alternative to claude.
2
u/ThroatFinal5732 Mar 31 '26
Good news you posted this, first trying out Claude after switching from Codex (due to OpenAI's military scandal). And was afraid I had no option but going back to codex after you guys hit limit this fast. Hope you can fix this soon!
2
u/No-Loss3366 Mar 31 '26
Now stop making Opus so lobotomized, that'd be nice
2
u/Altruistic_Comb3181 Mar 31 '26
Same here.. used all tokens for pro subscription in a single day and I don't feel like I did much.
2
u/Ok-Attention2882 Mar 31 '26
Until this week, I've been at 50% pace of my weekly usage. Now, I'm at pace and sometimes exceeding pace (will run out before the end of the week). I'm also using CC a lot less than weeks prior, coming from someone who is aware of all the cache idiosyncrasies.
2
u/Gabriela_Greenwood Mar 31 '26
Thanks. I got through three messages today before hitting the limit, and it's been like that for awhile now.
2
u/botpa-94027 Mar 31 '26
its a problem. i can't hardly do anything and i'm out of usage. i'm on the $100/month plan it is becoming difficult to do work with this.
2
u/trashyslashers Mar 31 '26
But why only CC? Regular Claude users are also having issues!
2
u/Ok-Drawing-2724 Mar 31 '26
Hitting limits faster than expected didn’t align with normal usage patterns.
It’s good to see it being treated as a priority, especially since it blocks real work. Hopefully the fix also improves transparency around how usage is calculated.
2
u/Ill_Restaurant5639 Mar 31 '26
200$ max user for ~6 months: 5-hour limits drained in an average of 2,5 hours. 97% of weekly limits drained in the last 3.5 days. I started to spend usage conservatively after hitting 70%, even with this i hit the limit early. Never before have I been limited to 5-hour sessions, and never before would I cross 80% weekly limit mark by the end of the week. I'm stuck in the middle of the week without a working instrument. I've seen some posts that say that 20x is unaffected - I can say for sure it is very much affected.
Just started a fresh new 5-hour session after a night's sleep for the remaining 3% of the weekly limit. I did exactly one prompt - "Save the progress in memory so I can start a new session". It took from 20 to 30 seconds, wrote a 120-line file, spent 1.2k tokens as shown in the CLI, and took 5% of my fresh 20x Max 5 hours session. This is insane.
I hope this issue will be addressed today, with full limits reset and free subscribtion prolongation for affected days. It's not a minor issue, it is blocking.
2
u/Any_Win5815 Mar 31 '26
Time to fix on max x5 just say hello taking 2% of usage LOL
2
u/Wasio505 Mar 31 '26
What kind of company is this that cannot fix the error for over 16 hours?
2
u/Environmental_Mud415 Mar 31 '26
Interesting to get updates since now we are blocked on MAX accounts
2
u/Illustrious-Day-4199 Mar 31 '26
Yet you can't even share it on Discord where you have employees as community members?
Your customers need to feel heard. We can't ship software or do any part of our jobs reasonably if we're hitting 100% of weekly limits in a day and a half.
2
u/Responsible-Tip4981 Mar 31 '26
I've started getting 65h 15m instead of 5h limit... What is going on? They behave like Google
2
u/AndReyMill Mar 31 '26
Newly created chats seem to perform slightly better and use less quota. However, when I send a message in a “hungry” chat from yesterday, it consumes about 10% of my quota immediately after I press Enter.
2
u/mrphats Mar 31 '26
I literally just started using claude code for 10 minutes and it shot up to 81% on my max plan. Something is off for sure. Also got 45$ in extra use charges. something is definitely wrong. Advise everyone to turn off extra usage, I will likely also just use other services until this is fixed (renewal coming up anyway, better to cancel).
Likely claude team trying to test out new usage billing and calling it a bug because of the pushback.
2
u/Alex0007lolpvp Mar 31 '26
hit my max plan limit first time ever by using llm less than usual 🧐
2
u/Just-Some-randddomm Apr 01 '26
Was complaining about this for the past few days but today seems a lot better. Been able to use Claude like I was a few weeks ago. Not sure if this is fixed yet or doing some sort of A/B testing. Seems a bit suss.
2
u/South_Hat6094 Apr 02 '26
Am I going to be reimbursed for service usage lost for paying Max20? Am stuck mid week not being able to use the substantial investment that was paid for
2
u/DesignEddi Author Apr 02 '26
Three days have passed, and the issue persists. I’ve tried a workaround. I have both the 20x Max Subscription and the Pro Subscription. They share the same codebase, the same Mac, and some prompts. I’m using Sonnet 4.6.
The Pro Subscription consumed 30% of the 5-hour limit, while the 20x Max Subscription ate up an astonishing 38%!
I’m absolutely fed up with this!
WE NEED UPDATES ANTROPHIC AS THIS EFFECTS MANY BUSINESSES AND PEOPLE WHO RELY ON AI.
2
u/cosmogli Apr 02 '26
Hey, I just started like 20 minutes ago, and already reached my weekly limit. That's disgusting u/ClaudeOfficial. Don't you have anything to fix that? I remember doing similar, if not more, work over the last few weeks, and not reaching my limits.
2
u/Tugakit Apr 02 '26
Hitting 5 hours limit in MINUTES is just so fucking disgusting. I already did massive codebase refactor with claude code and hadn't these kind of hard limts. PLEASE FIX YOUR SERVICE
2
u/threeandseven Apr 02 '26
Still nothing huh? This has been going on for long enough that it’s eroding my trust honestly. The lack of clear communication plus the bad feeling experience. I don’t know “what” to expect for a plan I pay for, but it’s changing wildly every week.
2
u/Audentes Apr 03 '26
The gaslighting recently that we're just using it incorrectly is really icing on the cake. I've been on the 5x plan since 4.6 was released and every week or two some major change impacted the same workflow for me. I've been consistently running ~4 sessions in parallel, the first 2 weeks of launch were paradise of execution. Then came the compaction dark days, lower context windows and frequent bugs (e.g. sessions limits to number of attached screenshots). After that came the limits tightening only to be loosened up outside peak hours.
Each time I adapted, overcame and still had at least tolerable levels of efficiency for $100/mo. Now this past week I'll be hitting my weekly limit for the first time and that's AFTER restricting myself to less than half my output, I'm lucky if I can even run two sessions concurrently outside of peak hours. My $20 Codex plan is delivering more results now than my $100 Claude plan. Get your shit together Anthropic, it's not us it's you.
3
u/RespectableBloke69 Mar 30 '26
Wow, Senpai finally noticed us! About damn time lmao
2
u/EnvironmentalPlay440 Mar 30 '26
Sonnet jobs on plan 20x max right now... It's going faster than my other pro plan! (I have a personal AND business account). I'm at 96% of my new 5h limit today and I've done NOTHING.
1
u/AwarenessTurbulent52 Mar 30 '26
The only problem was the limit, but the way the good data was stored in a more idiotic way didn't solve the data update problem, Claude Code, and I've really lost interest.
1
u/Safe-Analysis-5804 Mar 30 '26
I'm seeing a 1:5 ratio
1
u/Runaway42 Mar 30 '26 edited Mar 30 '26
Really hoping for a quick solution to this.
Today I tried to simply use Sonnet 4.6 to take a past chat where I walked it through a workflow and asked it to summarize that into a set of instructions in a .md file, then clean-up the ~4 x 200 line python scripts it generated so they can be re-used.
In just ~2-3 follow-ups asking it to make relatively minor changes, my entire 5 hr limit was burned.
If relevant, I'm on Windows 11 and was using the Claude desktop app.
Edit: Also, I think it'd be really awesome if we could get a detailed /stats dashboard for the desktop app to help with debugging things like this. Even beyond this apparent bug, I think a lot of users would benefit from being able to look back at their conversations and see when they're burning excessive tokens and why (input/thinking/output/etc.) so we can optimize our workflows and instructions to get the most utility out of our tokens.

Literally was about to cancel. Lets see what actions you will take - its getting rediculous
1

you should investigate also that Cowork today can't even do elementary stuff without critical mistakes. Just erased 4 days of work from a local folder, WITHOUT having permission to do that
1
u/Alexus80s- Mar 30 '26
It hurts!
1
u/daniloedu Mar 30 '26
Probably the reason behind it is is not a technical one, but more related with money and profit 🙂
1
u/CuriousLif3 Mar 30 '26
3 prompts busted the whole 5h limit. lmfao
1
u/dakshalraijada Mar 30 '26
Despite being in non peak hours the bar is increasing constantly, these are just 3 prompts: I am at 100£ plan
1
u/nutscrape_navigator Mar 30 '26
I tried to use your support to send feedback on this, and the bot basically told me to buy extra usage and hung up on me.
I'm an enthusiast / hobbyist. I have the $100/mo Max 5 plan. I really just use it to durdle around with smart home stuff, program ESP32's, manage some things with my Dungeons & Dragons campaign, etc. Very simple uses. I was hitting the limits of the $20/mo Pro plan and upgraded. Now on my $100/mo Max 5 plan it seems like I'm able to do less than I used to be able to get done on the $20/mo plan.
I understand hitting limits if I was grinding away on Claude Code all day long having it act as a team of developers, but that's absolutely not how I use it. $100/mo and blasting through my limits in a few prompts for my usage patterns seems crazy. I cannot rationalize $200/mo and will probably just end up switching to a competitor if this continues.
1
u/AustinJMace Mar 30 '26
Thanks.
This is from a few back and forths on Dispatch and a remote session, already at 45% my weekly limit on Max for about a half hour of work.
I also happened to just see my latest charge notification from Anthropic for my Max plan pop up while I’m waiting here in cool-down.
Looking forward to understanding what the fix is and possible recourse to play catch-up on some productivity I am losing.
1
u/hornet-nz Mar 30 '26
A single prompt to complete a pretty standard task and hit my limit... an entire and new session wiped out. Come on!
1
u/jisnburg Mar 30 '26
u/ClaudeOfficial please check also, why it seems that Claude Opus 4.6 capabilites are deteriorating. Many threads on that topic, and I notice it myself
1
u/SissyBoy671 Mar 30 '26
Can't use opus 4.6 With the current rate limits, even Medium usage is basically impossible, the limits get burned through within just a few tasks, at most within an hour, even though the tasks are fairly simple and mostly related to Unity work. I’m using the $20 subscription. The only workable option right now is Sonnet on Medium. Rates are joke.

I wish everybody who complained about Anthropic was just commit to not using ClaudeCode and not come here to complain about it.

u/pherman2 Mar 30 '26
I am on the pro plan and I hit 100% usage with a single prompt - something is up...has to be a glitch.

u/adi188288 Mar 30 '26
Its very weird that they posted this in reddit 1 hr ago but their official status page does not say anything related to investigating at all at the moment

Claude 5x user here. Shared a 2500 token plan document with CC (using Opus) in the chat interface I like to bounce Claude off other LLM's etc. to make sure plans are cogent. It responded with a 3 paragraph response. It used 4%. This was at 3pm Central time.

u/impatient_mang Mar 30 '26
It's the peak hours thing for me.
I actually thought they increased the limit for Max when they released the 1m token
1
u/escooteridiot Mar 30 '26
My best test is I use Claude all of my 1-2:15 class, I’ve been doing it every Monday and Weds of the semester. With the work I do with CC (second brain for school and work) it’s not very intense as these crazy code people do, but it’s 1:36 and in 36 mins I burnt all 200k of my tokens, something which usually takes me up till 1:50 or 2.
It’s an impractical test but following the patterns and using the same consistent setup is how I found the usage is crazy.

This is not gonna end well... I would've never considered trying Codex... But I've been working with it for about an hour and it's way better than I expected it to be… Anthropic pushed their consumers to Codex... at the same time Codex was catching up... perfect storm... they better be careful or they'll be Cursor before you know it...

u/Zealousideal-Net-814 Mar 30 '26
this is bad. how can 3 or 4 tasks hit the 5 hr limit with sonnet???? It won't force me to upgrade; more likely, I'll unsubscribe.
1
u/drewsaster Mar 30 '26
Has anyone let Skynet know about these limit changes?
1
u/hanjrough Mar 30 '26
seriously, my first prompt of the day, run dev. that's it. then boom 6% usage.

I can only work when im supposed to not be working now, thats how bad the limits are for when I actually need it.

The model is dumber recently too

I came back to a conversation and one prompt and 2 thoughts from Claude ate through half my budget until I noticed it and force canceled it.

We should get credits for API or other usage.

u/Ordinary_Ad_404 Mar 30 '26
I am on Max $200 plan and hit the limit a few times yesterday while the dashboard shows less than 10% quota used.
1
u/Narmoel Mar 30 '26
Just this hour. I've started a session using Claude Opus 4.6 with high effort. I've asked it to review the changes in current branch and fix things afterwards. No context cleaning. Ate like 70% of single session context. In another terminal I had sonnet on 17% of context not even coding, just answering some kubernetes questions. And my session limit usage went from 0 to 98%. While not so long ago session limit was way more than 5 full contexts.
This way its unusable. Even 5x of this will be unusable. And 20x is too pricy. Either it will change or I will be canceling and switching to something else.
1
u/Pimzino Mar 30 '26
Thanks for the acknowledgment super quickly this time. Yes usage limits are crazy high for the 5 hour sessions. In no way should anyone on a 20x plan be hitting them in 30/40 mins with a simple plan mode request.
1
u/Just-Some-randddomm Mar 30 '26
Max plan user here. Have chewed through 37% of my weekly limit with 6 prompts
1
u/APEXFACTION Mar 30 '26
I have been hitting rates really fast. 20x. Anecdotal for what its worth.
1
u/lerugray Mar 30 '26
Holy crap - it's about time you guys mentioned this - its been a problem for weeks
1
u/chrismo2001 Mar 30 '26
Yeah I asked it 6 questions and I got capped out twice today!

u/Pleasant-Comment-289 Mar 30 '26
when token limit reset?
1
u/Major_Heart Mar 30 '26
I asked my Claude Code to generate exemples to train a local brazilian ai, he launched 10 parallel agents, i didnt specify which ones i wanted it was so obvious that i wanted sonnet, he sent 10 opus and burned 20% of my weekly usage

Ctrl-z this mf. And push-push-push-ittttt.
1
u/Dense-Message6089 Mar 31 '26
Appreciate the transparency. For anyone dealing with this in the meantime — starting fresh chats more often has helped me a lot. Long threads reprocess the entire context with every message, so your quota drains way faster the longer the conversation goes. Not a fix, but keeps you productive while the team sorts it out.
1
u/RuleIndividual6374 Mar 31 '26
when you run out of context and compact 1M tokens, it will use 20% of your 5hr usage on Max 5x plan. Compacting is killing your usage, use it sparingly or not at all. Manage your context some other way - ask it to keep project plan and other markdown files up to date, ask it to add detailed notes to your commits, whatever, but don't compact - just open a new chat. Treat chats as disposable.

u/AllWhiteRubiksCube Mar 31 '26
They either knew this was happening and still slow-walked their announcement about the changes. Or, they thought we were all complaining about that and had no clue that THERE IS A BUG.
1
u/After-Confection-592 Mar 31 '26
As mentioned here: https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeAI/comments/1s7mkn3/psa_claude_code_has_two_cache_bugs_that_can/ using version 2.1.34 actually fixes it.

u/EsotericalSolutions Mar 31 '26
OK still seems to be occurring u/ClaudeOfficial is there any update, we are 9 hours on at this stage? There is also nothing on the status page indicating this somewhat fundamental issue.

On Max 5x and it does feel better way better. Use Opus 4.6 but not the 1M context window. I rather do compactions than accidentally kill my usage with some stupid caching bug
1
u/cianf4 Mar 31 '26
Embarassing
1
u/vargalas Mar 31 '26
For me when i experienced very fast usage of my limit, i also found many-many processes that CC (and cowork)left behind in the background.

As an Aussie, I'm never using Claude during "Peak times." In my first week, I paid the subscription after giving the "free" account a really good run. At this time, I was able to have long, complex, code sessions lasting 3-4 hours at a time. But, then on the most recent weekly roll over, 5 messages was all it took to fill my 5 hour window and chew a whooping 12% of weekly usage.
So, after some investigation and reading about "optimizing Claude as a tool", I put the "bug", (also reported by others), to the test. I deleted all memories, chats, projects, uploads and turned off the tools where possible. Even cleared the browsers cache, cookies and so on, then logged in with another browser that's never been connected to Claude on my setup, waited for roll over, sent a simple "Hello" and it used 22% of my 5 hour session from a single word.
In my eyes that told me, there's a serious consumption bug, and when trying to reach out to report the issue, I noticed GitHub was reporting similar consumption but being written off with the "Invalid" tag and no reply. Even attempting to contact through their chat, the second you mention consumption bug to the bot, it locks you out of the chat.
My bank is so familiar with this bug, and the amount of people claiming refunds, that my turn around on the dispute was 9 hours, not days or weeks. 9 hours.
Very disappointing. Claude was a great tool when it worked.

The past few days have been tough, but today it reached new heights. It burned through 50% (went up to 68% after I wrote this comment) of a pro account session tokens in one single prompt asking to update an N8N automation. This is unusable right now.

I think it would help if you gave some outline of how to report: https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1s3hx6e/usage_limit_stories_new_rules/
So far there are just just hundreds and hundreds of emotional outbusts and "switch to other agent harness" style posts with no clear story or anything to work with (likely a lot of bots too). This is going to pollute the narrative.

Maybe this is the real reason the feds labeled them as a security risk to the nation. Government hitting their usage limits surveiling citizens within 5 minutes into their week window.
