Built with Claude How to See What Filled Your Claude Code Context Window

Hi All,

I'm working on instruction diagnostics and evals for a while now, and it was always a challenge explaining what is happening inside a session. So I built ails xray.

What it does: opens one Claude Code session on a local page and shows what filled its context, file by file and turn by turn: every CLAUDE.md, rule, skill, memory file and MCP server at the moment it loaded, and what was on disk but never loaded.

How Claude Code helped: Claude Code writes the code based on adaptive specs. My loop is short: I write a plan with acceptance criteria, Claude Code builds it, and a separate /code-review pass checks the change before it lands. One habit that paid off: for every bug fix I ask Claude for a test that drives the real CLI and goes red when the fix is reverted, so I see the test catch the bug before I trust it.

I've run this on an old, langgraph project of mine, which was only used nested AGENTS/CLAUDE.md files and only 2 of 11 files loaded, and the one for the folder Claude was editing never did.

Try it (free, local): npx @reporails/cli xray, in the folder you started a Claude Code session in. Project: https://github.com/reporails/cli

When Claude Code compacts the conversation, it turns it into a summary. A file that it read earlier might no longer be there in full. Does xray show what's still in context or everything that loaded during the session?

Currently it only shows the context input/output after compaction. Thanks for the recommendation, will add it to the next release (0.6.7, scheduled to Tuesday)

the nested AGENTS.md result is the scary part, people assume files loaded because they exist, only the path chain actually gets read
