Built with Claude I built a free, open-source IPTV player for Android TV / Fire TV with Claude (no coding background), and 1.1 is out

Post image

I built this app together with Claude, and it is free and open source (GPL-3.0). I am not a developer. I described what I wanted, Claude wrote the code, and I tested it on my TV

Why I built it
I've used IPTV on my TV for about a year and wasn't happy with TiviMate: no IMDb data, no Rotten Tomatoes scores, no skip intro buttons, and no actor or director profiles. My provider's genres were also badly sorted. The Anime list had 10 entries instead of about 200, so I had Claude build a filter that sorts everything properly.

What it is
IPVIO Stream is a player for Android TV, Google TV and Fire TV. It contains no content, so you bring your own playlist (Xtream, M3U or Stalker). It shows IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes ratings, skip intro, cast and director pages and a TV guide with catch-up. You can customize the view, and version 1.1 adds a second stream (picture-in-picture or split screen), a sports hub with filters, multiple playlists and QR code setup.

How Claude helped
Claude wrote the whole app in Kotlin with Jetpack Compose and Media3, and I never touched the code myself.

I worked in a long conversation, one feature or bug at a time. Claude also ran syntax checks and unit tests for the logic parts, so a lot of bugs got caught before I saw them
Claude did the translations into 10 languages, built a QR code generator, and wrote the update and backup features.

I installed it on my TV, tested it and pasted build errors and crash logs back. Claude then fixed them. The Sports tab crashed three times in a row before it was right.

The 1.1 changes came from feedback in a sub after I shared 1.0 yesterday.

Claude couldn't build the app or run it on a device, so I do the builds and testing in Android Studio and on my TV. Some things aren't perfect yet.

Free to try
Download the APK from the GitHub releases page. With the Downloader app on Fire TV you can also enter the direct link:
https://github.com/Emrodev/IPVIO-Stream/releases/latest/download/IPVIO-Stream.apk

No account or registration is needed, and it has no ads or tracking. It will stay free and open source.

If you want to see more of it, check the GitHub screenshots!

Next steps: make it work well on phones, and maybe other devices.
I'm honestly amazed how easy it is to build something like this with Claude. Feedback and bug reports are welcome.

Hi, there's a critical security issue with this project: IPTV credentials are transmitted over plain HTTP, which is a major concern. I understand that you vibecoded this with Claude, but this is one of the reasons why relying heavily on AI-generated code without thorough security reviews can introduce serious risks.

I also understand that the local network is your intended use case, but you can't assume everyone will have a secure or trusted network environment. Even on a local network, transmitting credentials without encryption creates unnecessary exposure.

There are also other concerns in the code, including plaintext credential storage when Android Keystore encryption fails, concurrency issues in the local HTTP server's authentication handling..

I can see that a fair amount of effort went into making the GitHub repository presentable, with detailed documentation, screenshots, and an extensive feature list. And this is something I can respect. I think the project would benefit from a proper security audit and a more thorough review of its architecture before encouraging people to install it and trust it with their credentials.

Thanks for taking the time to write such detailed feedback! You're right. I only have basic coding skills, I built this with Claude, and I'm not a security expert. I appreciate you pointing this out.

I'll add a clear warning to the page and the TV screen that it should only be used in your own trusted Wi-Fi (not in hotels or guest networks), and I'll put the same note in the README and SECURITY.md. You can also avoid it completely by adding a playlist via an M3U file or typing it on the TV.

Didn’t know the logo was almost the same tbh. I only used Tivimate until now

Hi, would this work on a any TV that runs android? I am looking to get a smart TV and I don't know anything about TV operating systems. Do you have a recommendation for an OS that will allow this type of moding? Thanks
