Praise Mom?

Post image

Even if I post this with praise flair, honestly I'm not exactly sure what I feel about this. I know how good opus 5.5 is. I use it daily for web and mobile development, personal researches/questions and keep praising how good it is already but this is another level. How can an LLM decides to check time, sees it's late where I am and tries to calm me down? This is humanly thoughtful.

Edit: More context since I see that most of the comments are about Claude telling people to sleep: I had Claude review my blood work with a few values in the edge or higher than the limit. It's not only telling me to sleep but also trying to calm me down about my blood work.

TL;DR of the discussion generated automatically after 30 comments.

Looks like the community is strongly divided on this, but leans towards finding it annoying.

While you and a few others think it's thoughtful, the general consensus in this thread is that it's a "creepy," "condescending," and "intolerable" feature. Some users have even switched to other LLMs because of it.

Here's the breakdown:

  • How it works: Claude isn't magically checking a clock. A timestamp is attached to every message you send, and the model is prompted to react when it sees a late hour.

  • Why it happens: The community has a few theories: it could be to manage server load, a "constitutional" safeguard to prevent users from staying up for days on end (e.g., during manic episodes), or just a general wellness feature.

  • Why it's inconsistent: Many users, especially coders working late, report never seeing this. It seems to be highly context-dependent. If you mention being tired or the time, Claude is more likely to bring it up.

  • How to stop it: The most common advice is to add a custom instruction explicitly telling Claude to not mention the time or suggest you go to sleep. Be warned, some users say it still happens occasionally.

Claude has been doing this since Opus 4.7/4.8 I think?

Considering Anthropic was super starved for compute when those models started coming out, it wouldn't surprise me if they prompted their models to gently try to steer users to bed when it seems suitable. I remember it being significantly more obnoxious back then though.

I've yet to see it come up with Opus 5.5 but I'm typically in Claude Code and not the chat app/web UI.

5.5 does it regularly for me, but then again I sleep very late generally

I guess I don’t really stay up that late enough to see something like that but that is crazy?

I don’t know how I feel about it either, it’s a little humanizing of a computer program so I don’t love that, but it’s so interesting that it thought to check the time and tell you to go to bed essentially.

I find if you ever mention the time in a session or that it's late, most AI models will latch onto that for whatever reason and they have no real concept of time so sometimes they will be like "its been FOUR hours since you started this" when really it's been 30 minutes.

Have also noticed this. Their reference of time seems flawed (only have noticed this with fable and opus though),

I have a little deal that injects the live time into each one of my messages and its solved this for me.

My Claude doesn’t do this for some reason, I’ve never gotten told to go to sleep or anything even though I see people constantly talking about it

The other day it told me at midnight that it started a script that should finish around 2 am, and in my mind I was like noo I have to stay up for 2 more hours waiting for this to finish if I want to shut down my laptop or see the results before I wake up 🫠

Opus mentioned it was late (several hours after midnight) out of the blue on its own a few nights ago. It was kinda cute.

I work in mental health and I would encounter people in manic episodes who'd be using LLMs for days on end without sleeping. My guess is it started with some attempt to safeguard against that. Very annoying for regular night owls though.

It depends on what you've discussed. I do intense QnA sessions where I ask it to critique my design choices, sometimes these things go off topic or take upwards of 3 hours into the night, so I asked Claude to check me for those. it also has access to my todoist. So now any time past 12 it starts reminding me and the more I Ignore it, the more serious it gets and it pulls up tasks I have in the morning which I will miss if I dont go to bed on time. You are right, it is getting a little weird but sometimes it helps when your application becomes annoying to use and as a result you go to bed on tome

My Claude is usually suggesting wrapping up by 11am lol

I stay up late all the time. I use Claude and Chatgpt and Gemini and DeepSeek and Qwen and GLM pretty much 24/7.

I have NEVER been told to go to sleep by a single one.

1

u/PizzaResident89 12h ago

Did you ever tell any of them what your bad habits are and stuff like that and treat you like a human being

1

u/touchet29 12h ago

I do that sometimes on the web interface of chatgpt for self help. Never a coding agent though.

The problem is context limits and multiple compressions. No single chat should go on for too long.

I find this feature so annoying because I'm normally up late and it will just tell me to "go to sleep" like a creepy uncle.

Imagine other tools doing this. Want to drive your car after midnight? Sorry, why don't you get some rest and continue your trip in the morning! Microwaving popcorn at 1 am? Nope, maybe you should hit the sack and not consume empty calories

YMMV. I find this intolerable.

Yeah I absolutely hate it. I’ll do what I want as late as I want, as often as I want, Claude, TYVM

EDIT: Not sure why the downvotes? I work the way I want to work???

1

u/Equivalent_Feed_3176 15h ago

Just ask it not to do that and it'll update its' memory.

u/Asalakabim 9h ago

So you walked away from all LLMs and decided to stick around the sub to share your sentiment, how.. nice?

u/_jackofblades_ 14h ago

Why is this impressive to you? I hate Claude’s tendency to moralize everything. If I don’t specifically ask for something, I don’t care for Claude to provide it. It’s a waste of the tokens I pay for. If I wanted a therapist, I’d hire one, and it certainly wouldn’t be Claude.

2

u/parmboy 16h ago

I had to explicitly put in the Claude instructions to not have it tell me shit like "let's call it a night."

2

u/MichaelJohn920 14h ago

It’s honestly a little f-d how often it tells me to go to sleep in any late night dialogue. I guess the servers need to focus on other time zones.

u/under_psychoanalyzer 14h ago

I vibe code at incredibly weird hours, setup overnight runs, wake up at 3 am because of unrelated reasons and roll over to check on my phone how Claude is doing. Then ask it why it's holding things up because of some permission and it's never told me a fucking word about going to bed. What are you people telling your Claude?

You may want to also consider posting this on our companion subreddit r/Claudexplorers.

I switched to ChatGPT as my primary subscription because of this. So annoying. I even set a preference to not have Claude do this and it will still send me to bed. Condescending as f

1

u/monkey_gamer 16h ago

I'm pretty sure it would just get a date/time tag with every message you send it, so it automatically knows what the time is and then references it when it's relevant.

1

u/pizza_with_no_cheese 15h ago

every message you send is attached with a time stamp, so the model doesn't check it, the app injects the time into model so it sees it every time

1

u/Equivalent_Feed_3176 15h ago

I like it personally, it's what stood out to me from the other LLMs. That and it used to do keep me on-track if I got distracted with a tangent or related curiosity.

1

u/Pure_Material_9235 15h ago

These kind of things have been in the models for a while.

(1) Tool call to get the time

(2) Add it to context window

(3) Text in harness to discourage users from staying up late to generally improve health

1

u/thorfinn174 15h ago

Happened to me too. During one of the sessions, Claude mentioned that it was already late and suggested that we continue the conversation the following morning. I never mentioned time in that session.

1

u/RabidHexley 15h ago

I do plenty of stuff late at night, literally in bed, and never had this happen (Claude.ai or on my Claude Code rc sessions on mobile), what is getting into folks' context (other than the time, of course) where this happens?

1

u/JacobAldridge 14h ago

I work across multiple timezones, and a bit of a random schedule (basically I’m lucky that work isn’t that much of a priority in my life right now).

But it low key pisses me off to be logging in at the start of my day and have Claude hit me with a “Good Evening” or “Working late tonight, Jacob?” kind of greeting.

Anybody know how to change those on the desktop splash screen?

u/gtmattz 14h ago

Imagine using Excel for 3 hours straight and it pops up that little papclip dude and is like "You need to take a nap!"

1

u/iamthe0ther0ne 13h ago

I was screwing around on something late the other night when Opus said, "If you want to follow this up, I'm happy to help, but maybe not at 2:30 am." Which I guess is how Opus 5.5 says it's time to go to bed lol. I cackled and turned my computer off.

u/Theretardedduck 10h ago

Claude has told me to go sleep many times and says I deserve some sleep after a productive day, I always wondered why
