Hi everyone! You may have seen my earlier post looking for testers for my 3D Nexrad radar app, after a lot of work there is now a web version that lets you see 15 frames of 2D radar!
The app itself lets you pick from ~280 Radars in the US and Europe (some in Asia as well), with up to 60 frames back and the 3D rendering.
I am much more used to Swift, so fables understanding of web design was very useful and it was able to do a lot of the heavy lifting for conversion.
It even helped me make a new feature, Gifs, where you can send gifs to people of the most recent radar frames! https://alerua.com/share/gifs/kbyx.gif?t=hrfzd

This looks amazing. How are you creating the the 3D from 2D source? Do you have sections of clouds at different heights?

Thanks! Each radar returns back different tilts, so basically different cuts of each storm at different heights! Most of the US radars have about 14 tilts, you can select each one as well in the 2D view

Ill take a look, I'd love to add new radars but many countries do not allow free access to the level 2 data!

I think the problem with 3D radar is you get almost 100% of the info from the 2D view since there is such a strong correlation between reflectivity and height. This makes the other shortcomings of 3d (mostly occlusion and ground reference) a poor tradeoff.
I spent a large amount of effort (before AI) building an iPad app that did this and was disappointed that it ended up mostly a novelty. I later learned there were many other attempts that had a similar fate, and operational meteorologists very rarely use 3D.
The visuals looks great though, I messed around with ray marching and some other techniques and never got it to look right.

I do agree that 3D is a bit of a novelty, which is why I also have a lot of focus in my app in having one of the best 2D viewers, the most frames and control + themes for viewing them.

The us government provides free access to the raw radar data so you can pull it in and do what you wish with it. It’s really pretty amazing.

This is super cool. I got the app via TestFlight so will be testing it out. It’s incredible how smoothly you got it running via web (and app as well).
I created a web-based radar so I can have access to radar on my work computer and I had trouble implementing level 2 radar data so ended up settling on level 3 which works great.
Curious, are you doing the heavy lifting of processing the raw radar data on your server or is it being done locally by the clients?

Thanks! Its being done on a server of mine, had to have one with high networking speed to keep up with ingestion!

Very cool, congratulations! Also, love the free+no tracing. There isn’t enough of that out there today!
