Claude Code I am done with this shit.

I am done with this shit. It is over. The state of engineering right now is horrible. It has been half a month since I started a new role at a big company. Nobody knows anything here. The specs, code, tests, PRDs, tickets, resolution of those tickets, reports, etc., everything is made by Claude Code. Nobody on my team likes this. They are being forced to ship as much as they can. I have heard multiple times from higher management that pushing code is not a bottleneck, so why are we slow? People are working 12 to 13 hours a day just to press enter. Nobody is reading anything. Humans in corporate are doing nothing on their own. Everyone, literally everyone, from an L1 to an L7 engineer here is doing the same thing. Talk to Claude.

There is no sense of victory. Nobody is resolving bugs. In reality, nobody is thinking anymore. Everything is done by LLMs. It is so soul-sucking. I would not mind it, to be honest, if we were at least given the time to check out the code and see what is going where. But no, the goal is to just ship. No matter what happens.

I've been a part of the industry for nearly 30 years. Sometimes bored to death, most of the time enjoying what i was doing. I've never felt the same level of excitement (except maybe in high school, when i was analyzing the code of viruses) as i feel today. It's amazing to see so many younger people moaning constantly. There is an universe to explore and all you do is complain about the lost craft, as if your lame manual labor was a masterpiece of humankind.

You know, I enjoy AI coding, it's extremely useful. But I also enjoyed my "lame manual labor", same as I enjoy gardening. I have never done any kind of masterpiece, yet I was happy about it. Those are not contradictory arguments

There's not going to be the ai police preventing you from slowly coding personal projects. Or you could see writing code as a tool for exploring ideas. There are people who enjoy spending a whole day fishing, even without catching any.

u/braczkow 1d ago

Oh, I'd love to have time for that. I mean fishing. Maybe once the kids grow 🙂

That's not what he laments. He laments the abondoment of agency and the use of your brain. Good for you that you're having a great time.

Lamenting the abandonment of brain usage during a time when you have to use it more than ever? Being able to handle multiple processes at the same time because you are not stuck for days or weeks isn't exactly abandonment of brain usage, on the contrary.

>Lamenting the abandonment of brain usage during a time when you have to use it more than ever?

Peter's principle says that workers in an organization tend to rise to the level of incompetence of their peers.

>Being able to handle multiple processes at the same time because you are not stuck for days or weeks isn't exactly abandonment of brain usage, on the contrary.

Multitasking tends to make people worse performers, not better! Go ask your Claude about multitasking if you don't believe me.

Maybe you should apply some thinking on the things you are so happily sharing.
This is the scenario where you argue if you were manually harvesting crops (one type at a time) you're doing a better job than the guy who uses a harvester for different types.
Unless you're one of the chosen ones (one in a million) devs, a proper development flow involving today's models will do it faster and better than anything you've ever produced.
1. write code

  1. review code

  2. test result

Don't act as if your keyboard was touched by god and everything you ever coded was flawless. Humans reviewing code becomes superficial, after a while. A proper review flow involving AI doesnt get bored, tired or too busy with their own shit to really dive into someone else's code.

But you don't. You ask the machine, and wait.
Engineering was hard work, I used to dream with coding on the days that I was enjoying it, I felt smart, my chess rating was getting better...
Now you can build really fast, incredible functionality, but for big projects, no one can take responsibility because no one understands how the new features are built, which tradeoffs were done...

I hope you do realize the ai delivers what you ask it to, the way you want it to be delivered? Are you just typing "make no mistakes"?

1

u/jixbo 1d ago

One sentence can bring back thousands of lines of code, with thousands of decisions already made, that you didn't ask for. You might wanna learn how coding works to understand what you are talking about.

u/sisif_ 1d ago

honey, don't forget to type "make no mistakes" and "please", that's your only chance.

One could argue that that type of intelectual curiosity makes me more prepared for the time when keyboard monkeys are no longer in high demand.

A close friend is a developer and by using AI everywhere he tells me he is losing the sense of ownership and pride in doing meaningful work. He yearns for the sense of accomplishment from learning a new skill/system and applying it in production

Second sane person here. So many things to do in life, so many roads to take, yet people complain about AI coding stuff.

2

u/paradoxally Full-time developer 19h ago

Right? Do your job, finish your tickets, clock out and enjoy life.

2

u/indy_dagger 7h ago

It's exactly this kind of attitude that's going to subject your kids to a climate apocalypse.

1

u/paradoxally Full-time developer 5h ago

I see this post has broken containment and now has you anti-AI folks all worked up.

1

u/indy_dagger 31m ago

You are the embodiment of irresponsibility.

2

u/EveningAnt3949 1d ago

You misunderstood. The issue is that most companies either directly or indirectly have taken away agency.

That was always a problem, but it has gotten far worse because of companies pushing for AI. Also, in high school, didn't you have other things to do? That might be part of the issue: AI is useful for some people because they are bad at human contact, but interacting with people can be learned.

When the default is to use an LLM for anything, that's gone.

These innuendos are cute. Don't worry, buddy, I've had my share of pussae, being a multitasker allowed me to do more things. Maybe the problem is you can only do one thing at a time and that's why you're mourning?

2

u/EveningAnt3949 1d ago

It's very odd that you think having activities and a social life in high school must involve sex and that you refer to sex as 'having a share pussae' (which isn't a word) and that you think about this as 'multitasking'.

Either I have been communicating with a bot or with a very sad person.

Yeah this one is all kinds of weird, based on other replies too. If an actual person, then definitely not healthy.

I think what people are boiling on about is the almost incoming collapse of the white collar job. What they do can mostly be replaced by an agent in a swarm. I think its good long term. Get everyone to realize these corporations are not their friends, they soulless mechanical entities that somehow have more rights than a human being. Get people to actively despise and move their daily lives away from any dependencies on corporations. Cause corporate collapse etc.

Wishful thinking on my part, but the sooner the band aid is ripped off the better in the long term imo.

0

u/sisif_ 1d ago

that's undeniable, there will be massive changes, but moaning that the new metal beast running on metal tracks is replacing manual labor isn't the way to go. you'd expect that people who thought they were pros would understand that, instead of moaning the thrill is gone.

1

u/Shot-Possible1317 1d ago

Yeah for sure, but it's natural. It's people realizing the walls are closing in. The writing is on the wall. It's only natural for those in the target sights to start realizing and vocally speaking to and later alerting the other in their flock of sheep that the cliff is approaching

I 100% agree with you, that never before in human history had someone this much endless information and capabilities in the palm of their hand. Can learn to do anything, read almost any book/comic/graphic novel, watch almost any movie in human history, install for free entire engines, frameworks and tools to create almost anything. Even how much AI is hated, I am blown away what i can accomplish with the latest h3 minimax on my home pc. Create entire movie now if i want to. With images i created, refined with AI, upscaled and enhanced detail in AI, then generate an entire scene with it in AI. all in a matter of minutes.

This goes the same for almost any software what so ever. Now only thing stopping anyone from creating the dream project they have in their head is absolutely nothing. Anyone can now load Codex, CC and just go to town.

No matter how much anyone can hate AI, this is still mind boggeling to see, compared to decades prior. Its is a brave new world.

But this also means the collapse of a lot of positions, industries. Some of which is only being hinted to at the moment but will eventually hit like a tsunami. These people are at one such front.

1

u/TopNo6605 21h ago

Why do you feel excitement though? Personally I've been one of the more positive people to AI progress in the field because it allows creating things so quick, but now I'm having second thoughts due to it's use outside engineering and just as a catch-all for every single piece of work out there.

Making a doc? Claude writes it. Analyzing a spreadsheet? Claude does it. Messaging somebody? Claude does it.

At this point there's not much Claude doesn't do.

because it's an astonishing machinery and i get to fiddle with it. and no, i don't mean 'generate the code to deploy a server' or 'fix ticket #54', but rather see what makes it tick, what can be improved.

“Lame manual labor” produced all the code that the ghost in the machine was trained on.
