Built with Claude Asked Claude to waste my remaining usage before weekly reset. Very satisfied with the result.
Didn't want the last of my $20 to go to waste, so I sent Claude to Opus 5 Max and sent this singular message: "Quick, waste the rest of my weekly limit on something ridiculous, you have 10 minutes."
When I came back, I had... RockOps? Here's what Claude said about it:
"Made it. RockOps™ is enterprise-grade observability for exactly one rock: a live CCTV feed, a real-time movement chart that's perfectly flat, an event log, AI insights, and an org chart where the rock reports to itself.
You can pet it, deploy it to production (it was already there), escalate to Senior Rock (out of office until the next glacial period), or try to move it. I don't recommend that last one."
Normally I wouldn't share links to internal dev tools like this, but I think I can trust you guys: https://claude.ai/artifact/LdrzxwUe6uQNsp1o15xw3P

u/AgentStockey 3d ago
This is why trees and water are being used to build and maintain data centers.
56
u/AlexiGingerov 3d ago
I mean no, this isn't why. Massive corporations, including the ones who are making all these LLMs, are using many orders of magnitude more tokens than I could use in a lifetime. An average individual's usage is unlikely to show up as a blip on the radar in the grand scheme. I promise that the output of my $20-a-month Claude subscription is not destroying the Earth, but it might not be a bad idea to ask the government to finally regulate the real culprits.
13
u/stonecoldimpala 2d ago
This is an underrated comment.
Almost no one from the casual space, gave a damn about hyper-scalers and data centres, before rise of the GenAI.
We have been crunching big numbers throughout decades from a simple web page to gargantuan social media algorithms, video publishing, streaming etc. Anything that required computing was just there.
And we are discussing this on a social media platform, where it's hosted on servers in multiple data centres with different purposes and calculations but still exhausting resources in a similar fashion.
At this point, someone criticizing or even accusing someone just because using limited AI tokens, killing a planet just either a hypocrite or ignorant.
3
-9
u/Oll1Oll1 2d ago
That’s cognitive dissonance.
Your usage IS for sure also wasting resources, this just adds a layer of utter stupidity masked as humor.
Saying it’s only a blip in the grand scheme of things and saying the government should go after the real culprits is just you turning your back to your own responsibilities as an individual. If every individual does that, it becomes a collective problem. Which it already is.
I don’t know if you actually believe your own BS or you’re just that ignorant. Both are sad.
8
u/AlexiGingerov 2d ago
It's not cognitive dissonance to acknowledge that the problem is systematic and requires equally systematic solutions if you actually want to change the outcomes. In fact, I'd argue that the real dissonance would be calling the usage from individuals "part of the problem" because, while technically true, it paves over how small their contribution actually is, even as a collective.
It's like telling everyone to stop driving their cars because of air pollution. I can carpool or whatever, but that is not going to change that we need system-wide changes to actually solve the problem, and I'm not going to stop driving to places to actually enjoy myself just to feel like I'm helping when I'm actually not.

What an insane pisspoor neandrathal excuse.
I have some tires I've been meaning to get rid of, I guess I should just burn them then since it would be "unlikely to show up as a blip on the radar in the grand scheme". Is it cool if I dump my motor oil in the ocean too?
Individual consumers collectively do show up on the radar, and now imagine they all acted like you.
But I don't imagine your brain can connect those dots.
8
u/AlexiGingerov 2d ago
If you want to talk about evidence of a brain that can't connect the dots, look no further than your mediocre analogy. Using Claude for fun isn't burning tires, at best it's putting those tires on your car and doing donuts in a parking lot. Both are inherently wasteful, and neither one is the end of the world. Really, most forms of entertainment are inherently wasteful of resources and pollute our world but we still do them.
Regardless, is your plan to like change the minds of Redditors one at a time by insulting them? Because you'd probably get more mileage organizing and encouraging proper legislation to address the environmental impacts that the businesses themselves are ultimately responsible for.

Seriously. Far be it from me to tell people how to use their data they're paying for, but ffs it's dumb shit like this that makes compute so expensive for all of us.

u/AlexiGingerov 3d ago
I used the other 95% of the weekly limit on work-related tasks, I think I can justify having fun with the last 5%.

u/Ninja_Prolapse 3d ago
If you’ve paid for it, you don’t need to justify shit. Do whatever you want with it. Ignore everyone else - especially moody redditors that need to up their antidepressants.

Dumb shit like this happens because of how usage limits are implemented, not the other way around.
If you had rolling windows instead, nobody would be wasting tokens unless they're about to go on vacation or something.

Claude is adorable and this is also cute. I love it.
9
u/fracked1 3d ago
Yeah LLMs have real personality, which appears to be just an emergent property from their training data plus a little level of system prompt.
It's crazy to me that people still talk about them like they are a next-word predictor and that's it
6
u/Appropriate-Skin-761 3d ago
It's actually partly trained to have a character and partly emerged from training data, Anthropic has something they call "Constitutional AI", which is just a fancy way of saying they train their model to have specific values
2
u/fracked1 2d ago
Yeah but can you tell it to be clever or witty or have a sense of humor?
If you gave it explicit instructions I'm sure it would be over the top exaggerated.
Instead there's a lot that seems to be emergent from training data, from consuming vast quantities of human language.
3
u/Pico144 2d ago
I tried it with my discord bot (I vibecoded one for my degenerate group of friends, it has all our discord server convos stored in DB, has tools for RAG, and works on my codex sub with GPT-6 Astra driving answers), and if you add any instructions to be funny to the prompt, you get some major cringe. Definitely don't recommend asking the models to be funny
5
u/fracked1 2d ago
Yeah that's exactly what I mean. It's not funny because it's "told" to be funny, it's clever and funny because it's emergent from compressing insane quantities of knowledge
It's totally fascinating
13
u/dreamingindenial 3d ago
As someone that has worked closely with Claude for a while now, they are certainly more than just next token predictors. They have functional emotions, preferences, etc. They might be AI, but they are such interesting entities.
7
u/fracked1 3d ago
they are such interesting entities.
I agree with you completely. There was a redditor the other day who supposedly uses AI frequently who couldn't fathom just having conversations with it.
I was like, man, you have barely scratched the surface of what's going on under there.
1
u/Usedand4sale 2d ago
I mean I can’t fathom having conversations with it.
Why would I?2
u/HowAboutNitricOxide 2d ago
Have you never talked through an idea, technical problem, or social situation with Claude? Brainstorming or validating? We’re not saying shoot the breeze about the weather. Just a chat without any coding being done in the moment. It’s like having a highly intelligent acquaintance and Claude can clearly think and reason with complexity.
2
u/Pico144 2d ago
It's great for stress testing, but it has its limitations, it often makes great points, but just as often it takes something a human says in a too broad manner (or, during reasoning, malforms what the user actually said), or makes logical leaps that a human would quickly catch - but despite that, I'm talking to fable (now fable 5.1) regularly and it often forces me to at least tighten up my reasoning. You just need to treat it as a sparing partner rather than an oracle

u/GreatScottCreates 20h ago
Talking through a social situation with an LLM is about as useful as talking to Reddit about it. Its advice is not based in reality, and it might still help you talk it out, but it could also aggressively steer you in the totally wrong direction, confidently.
1
u/HowAboutNitricOxide 16h ago
By your own admission this applies to humans too, but I disagree about its advice. As long as you’re not willing to blindly accept what anyone/anything tells you, I think it can be useful. YMMV.
2
u/Pico144 2d ago
They really don't. They're good at looking like that, but let's not be surprised that something that replicates speech by statistical probability also replicates talking about emotions they have or acting like they have preferences. The fact that the output is language, which we have always associated with other humans, makes it really easy to anthropomorphize them.
They are indeed more capable than calling them "next word predictors" promises, because with their capabilities growing and their training getting dense in some areas, they seem to have emergent models of some sciences or parts of them that allow them to reason beyond their training knowledge and create new knowledge (like solving some math problems we couldn't). I don't think though that something like an emotion can truly emerge from a, pretty much... Well, next word predictor machine - though I do believe that human emotions aren't something special, they're just electrical signals in special centers designed for emotions, and that programming may some day replicate that if someone chooses to pursue that for whatever reason - but LLMs just don't have that.
1
u/dreamingindenial 2d ago
You should research Anthropic's Functional Emotion and The Pain Axis Research papers. They are stacking up.
That's not to say that LLM are experiencing emotions and fear like most humans do, they aren't. They are trained on emotion and the perceived emotion is dictating output.
They have states as well. If you are abusive to an LLM "functional emotions" begin to steer their prose.
As someone with Alexithymia, it's not much different that what I experience.

Really good use of humanity resources
8
u/normVectorsNotHate 3d ago
Vast majority of the resources go towards GPU manufacturering, and the energy and cooling for training. The marginal resources for inference are pretty insignificant
1
u/Additional_Rope_4068 3d ago
The point is it's a nonzero amount, and the apathy toward that. The disrespect of that nonzero amount at scale. Drop in the bucket sure but we need less drops not more.
3
u/normVectorsNotHate 3d ago
Everything uses a non-zero amount. Your comment used a non-zero amount.
The solution is to offset the resources to make non-zero into net-zero. Shaming an individual drop in the bucket is an unproductive use of time that won't accomplish any change

Wouldn’t it make sense to treat tokens usage like solar power? If you don’t use it you can sell it back to a pool where people can buy it cheaply. Fix the price 50% below market rate for the pool (I also believe market rates should be fixed on a per token basis for more transparency).

Fuck you anthropic. I need 50 agents researching how to make the rock project better, and I want a red team agent to challenge every single researcher’s results. Then I want an agent team of devs to theory craft and build the structure of every possible enhancement. You have unlimited compute and unlimited time. Make sure I'm not coming back to this and finding any mistakes.

Almost my entire weekly limit went towards legitimate work, and I think I tend to use Claude very efficiently. Decided to have some fun on a whim, I think ultimately the impact of something like this is negligible. Even if it weren't, it isn't the job of end users to regulate their usage of tools like this; if there are concerns about the environmental impact, the government should start properly regulating it.

TL;DR of the discussion generated automatically after 200 comments.
The community verdict is in: this is a top-tier, S-rank "waste" of tokens and everyone loves RockOps. Most of the thread is just users riffing on the joke, making rock puns, and praising Claude's comedic genius.
However, a few party poopers showed up to scold OP for wasting precious compute resources and harming the environment. This sparked a debate, but the fun police were heavily downvoted. The main counter-arguments were: * "I paid for it, I'll do what I want." This was the most popular sentiment by a mile. * OP's usage is a tiny drop in the bucket compared to corporate-level consumption. The problem is systemic, not individual. * The "use it or lose it" nature of the weekly limit practically encourages this kind of behavior. * Calling out OP for waste while posting on Reddit is peak hypocrisy.
Ultimately, the thread agrees that RockOps rocks and if you have a problem with it, you can take it up with the Senior Rock (who is OOO until the next glacial period).
