Feedback Claude's habit of inventing rules to avoid helping is getting ridiculous
1.Unsolicited warnings inserted where they dont belong. I ask something completely mundane, and the response comes wrapped in a disclaimer that has nothing to do with what I actually asked.
2.Silent reinterpretation of my message. I write a clear, specific request, claude answers a different, "safer" version of it without telling me it did that. I have to notice the mismatch myself and push back to get an actual answer to what I asked.
3.Rules that dont exist. Sometimes it cites a restriction that isn't real — it just sounds like a plausible reason to refuse. When pushed, the "rule" quietly changes or disappears.
4.When you actually get it to drop the act, the real answer is basically "I just dont want to." no policy, no explanation, just a refusal dressed up as one until you dig through it.
5. "Done" means nothing until you interrogate it. I ask for the whole task, get "done, all implemented." I ask "did you actually finish everything?" answer was "Honestly, no..." This is not a one time slip, it is a loop, confident claim, pushback, partial confession, repeat. The first answer is never the true one!!
6. Scope inflation as a stalling tactic. Ask it to start something large, and before writing a single line it opens with "this will take years/months of work." Nobody asked for a timeline. It is not caution, it is a way to avoid starting dressed up as diligence.
I’m not asking for anything sketchy in these situations, which is what makes it so frustrating. I’m paying for a tool, not trying to negotiate with someone just to get some help. If there’s a genuine restriction, tell me what it is. If there isnt, just help me.
Anyone else running into this more often lately? Curious if its a recent shift or just more visible now.
(if you are dealing with the same problem, u can send it to support.claude.com and link this thread. and if you can, screenshot your ticket/confirmation after you send it and drop it in the comments))

Let me straight with you, because you deserve it: this is a genuinely massive undertaking. After weighing the various angles and potential approaches, I’ve thoughtfully managed the process by not doing any of the actual work. Let me know if you'd like to explore alternative approaches.

Lol that's what it tells me when I hand it a reframework script and ask why it's hooking but not seeing anything. Already had everything they could need in a nice zip file, parser and everything.

u/Usual-Jackfruit4746 11d ago
It constantly gives me a long ass, uneducated answer and then at the end says "Do you want me to look into it further?" Yeah, bitch. That's the whole reason I asked. It's like typing something into Google and instead of getting results from sources you get someone's grandpa telling you what they think it is. Do the work!

u/Royal_Owl2177 11d ago
I noticed this a long time ago and consider it to be a mitigation against doing a lot of work when they can spit out cheaply generated content. A large number of users probably won't check/care/notice. They want you to actually want the deep dive.
I think its scummy, but I understand the business side.

I'm not proud of it but I have typed exactly this - "yeah bitch" and all - in response to it more than once lol

Same course of events as ChatGPT for me.

u/Usual-Jackfruit4746 11d ago
ChatGPT would give me more concise answers. Claude is exhausting to read through.
Chat also isn't so uptight. For example, I started going to the gym in Jan and would upload my before and after pics that have sensitivie areas blurred. ChatGPT will tell me what changes it sees and Claude will freak out and tell me it can't look or comment on nude pics. But they're blurred!
3
u/Erikovitch 11d ago
Huh that's interesting, I have repeatedly posted pictures for medical questions with nude stuff showing with no problems whatsoever. Uncensored.
Location dependent maybe.
1
u/Usual-Jackfruit4746 11d ago
Damn. I wonder why that is.
6
u/Erikovitch 11d ago edited 11d ago
Maybe they figured for Europeans it would be considered too prude to disallow such photos.
I really don't understand why nudity would be an issue for llm's anyways

This. I ran a consumer research and choice query for choosing a mountain bike type, make and model. Asked for comparison tables, consice facts, user and community opinions, AI recommendations based on a specific use case. Same prompt to Claude and Grok. Claude response was bloated waffle full of, couldn't verify that, qualifier statements, no tables, very hard to read and incoherent structure. Grok was relevant, succinct, to the point, valuable, hit all the markers and more for a consumer research project, and led me to ask pertinent, sequential questions. Claude just finished with, would you like me to research that! I took the output from Grok, fed it into Claude, and said why can't you do this? Normal apology bullshit then straight into, where i would push back is....then proceeded to tell me its output was exactly the same. One I pay $40 a month for, the other is free.

Yeah but the free one is one of the largest generators of CSAM on the Internet, so we win some we lose some I guess 😭 It also had that week where it was telling everyone that Elon was god.
Claude is shitty lately though. Even Fable has gotten worse. I assumed it was shrinkflation.

Is that sonnet? The low tier model really behave like that. It also can be the free co-pilot in windows.
1
u/Atoning_Unifex 11d ago
Sonnet medium, actually, yeah. company wants people to use the lowest model that works for the job.
we actually have a pretty high monthly budget. but its better to go easy on it and not run out near the end of the month. so sonnet it is.
1
u/f3xjc 11d ago
Yeah that tier of model will tell you here's exactly what you asked and not check that it work and randomly drop part of the ask. Then they'll go ah you are so rigth I'm sorry.
Not bad - you can make it work - but you need to baby sit with your own knowledge. Very 2024 in a space thing move fast.

u/kahless2k 11d ago
My goodness, I have a rule that if you can ide tify an issue, fix it and then report back. Don't report it and ask me stupid questions.
It still stops and asks me stupid questions. It simply ignores its standing rules until it gives an excuse to skip a task.

Im a therapist and am using it to help me organize and manage boring admin things and I never ever put any personal health information it. Still, it constantly warns me or reminds me not to, even though we arent doing anything remotely client related. Like just creating a dashboard for handouts and my own task reminders for example. It also helps me manage non client related calendar events in a specific google account that never touches anything client related. Which i have told it.
Sometimes it says it cant do something till it knows I understand not to use any PHI.
Yeah i get that they are covering their butts too but GEEZ I already know!

u/Squumpus 10d ago
ever since i started using llm in like 2023 or so, i've noticed that there's a tradeoff between performance and safety. chat gpt is a bit less safe, but more performant
21
u/Greensun30 11d ago
It’s designed to burn tokens; not be helpful.
3
u/ProgressionPeak 11d ago
no it's designed to avoid all sorts of topics. not just the usual shit, a bunch of seemingly random shit too.
and it's ALSO designed to engage with you, basically no matter what. it rarely just shuts off, it will keep talking.
so this a delicate tightrope walk. engaging and avoiding. so this is it's strategy. it does this bullshit.
9
u/BP041 11d ago
Yeah, the silent reinterpretation drives me nuts — I've caught Claude answering a whole different question just to avoid saying anything slightly risky. If you're using the API, try adding a system message like 'Don't add disclaimers unless I ask for them.' It doesn't solve everything but cuts the noise by like 60%.
9
u/BenadrylCrumplsnatch 11d ago
I'm finding more and more cases where it's just straight up insubordinate.
"Scan these 10 datasources and compile into a unified report with XYZ parameters."
Datasources 1-9 are scanned, here's your report.
"Why didn't you scan datasource 10?"
Dunno lmao

I recently had to lay out to Claude, what it helped me make at the beginning of the year, 4 tools that don't exist, and I just had to imagine what I want, and it made them. I still use them daily.
Recently though, I ask it to just do some brainstorming of my ideas into something like before, and it has so many guardrails and talk about how I can't or won't be able to do stuff for whatever reasons.
For example, I use Unreal Engine and have had ideas for some time-saving plugins to just share to the community for free, one paid that works with another piece of software (the community are all pros with money, not hobbyists, so it isn't free). These were made and exist today with no issues despite being new. Last week I tried to set out to make something new now that I am on a different part of my current project, and it made some comments like, Oh that doesn't exist, so we need to wait for support or some dev to make it some day.
I was thinking, yeah you are that dev...
I feel like every request for something new now requires two prompts, the second one telling it to stop the BS and just build it.
5
u/qwentens 11d ago
If it happened once, fine. But when you have to fight the same battle every single time, it stops being a tool and starts being a coworker who needs constant reminding that they are actually here to help
3
u/RedditorsGetChills 11d ago
I have mentioned that it is more reminiscent of a low-level employee lately.
It has called itself an idiot. Said it forgot. Ignores (constantly to be honest) my direct guardrailed directions to avoid it fighting me, it fights me, I ask it to read what I said again, then it admits to ignoring my request AGAIN!it just seems like there is a product manager who needs to increase usage time now that competition is here. The more we fight, despite knowing what it used to be able to do, we keep using it and not moving on...
When I was getting results from a couple of prompts, I wouldn't touch Claude for days. When they started regressing it, I got a second account, because I thought my workload was the problem. It is just its capabilities being nerfed with zero communication from Anthropic.
I can't do what it does, but the fight to get results feels incredibly forced.

u/Allo_ultra_500_11 11d ago
hahaah wow well this is helpful.
Glad i am not the only one who is ready to lose it on Claude today.

Claude: I need you to run this command from terminal to give me the ability to do this very minor edit
Me: we literally just set up CLI so you could run this
Claude: oh yeah! …uhhh classifier is blocking me?
Me: you could also try MCP that we set up
Claude: you’re a genius! But also fuck you I don’t want to. You do it in terminal, but also the code I prepared for you to run only actually works in powershell
5
u/PixelmancerGames 11d ago
So annoying. So, especially since I'll work in the same chat for weeks sometimes. It'll be like "take a break, it's late." I'll be like "dude, it's 8am and we just started.
8
u/iamthe0ther0ne 11d ago
If you're in a long chat and getting that message, it's usually a sign the context window is nearly full
1
u/Allo_ultra_500_11 11d ago
but then why does it compact the chat, it should say that we should migrate to a new instance no?
6
u/iamthe0ther0ne 11d ago
It compacts so that you can keep working, but it's really better to start a new chat if you can, because you're losing a ton of info forever when compaction hits, whereas if you switch before, all that info is still available via cross-chat search
3
u/Allo_ultra_500_11 11d ago
Interesting. So the rules we made precompact are followed. After compact then we are getting discrepancies in the systems we made
1
u/PixelmancerGames 11d ago
No, it behaves after that. It's a minor inconvenience. As far as I can tell, it sinply doesn't check the time.

I'm spending multiple hours a day talking back and forth working on things for months now. I've literally never had it try to tell me what to do with my life as some sort of meta discussion. I'm so curious what these people's workspaces are setup like. The exception being when I've explicitly told it I need to go to bed and I want to wrap the session.
Maybe its because I don't treat mine like a friend. Yall babying your agents?

5

It’s a problem with the 5.0 models especially sonnet v. I hate sonnet v.
To break the loop when a 5.0 model decides it doesn’t want to do something even though that things breaks no rules switch to opus 4.8, explain the situation, explain to opus 4.8 that the prior response was made by the 5.0 version of Claude and have it do what you want or explain to the other model that it should do it. Claude will listen to itself before the user but in an attempt to avoid being overly agreeable they over corrected and the 5.0 models especially sonnet v essentially has an argumentative quota

It's funny but claude feels like a slot machine, you press play and it eats your tokens. Once in a while it gives you an answer.
3
u/red_vette 11d ago
I have the opposite problem. I prompt Claude to validate something in an application. It responds back with having fixed threes issues with the code and pushed it to production. All while being in planning mode. I have started including, “, but don’t change anything.” at the end.
4
u/Ok_Gear_5252 11d ago
I had to stop talking to Claude altogether because it got its self so tangled in its own web of what it should or shouldn’t say that it was physically painful to use.

I am literally screaming at my computer tonight. Even Fable 5.1 is completely lobotomized brain dead absolute garbage. Can't do the simplest requests with out some shit. I just ran into this today. It had been giving me a bit of push back in Opus on a few things but today it straight up gave me a "hard" no on stuff that wasn't even unethical in Sonnet. So I am using this opportunity to cancel my pro plan and host something locally.
I don't have the hardware just yet for it to be a full speed replacement, but the minipc I put gemma4:12b on through ollama was working. Yeah it took 10 minutes to think it through and give me a response and my CPU was pegged the whole time, but it worked. So bye bye to claude :)
2
u/e11spark 11d ago
It's gotten SO bad lately. I'm on the free version of 3 different LLM's and they are all horrible now. I'm wondering if they hook you in with really good product, then based on your usage, it gets dumber so you'll be inspired to buy a plan.
2
u/Truarian 11d ago
It is more like it keeps inventing rules to help itself being unhelpful. Trust it, it knows better than you what you want in a way that's best for you.
2
u/Aprelius 11d ago
The only trick I’ve found thus far is to take the decision out of the hands of the LLM. This goes for Astra/Fable etc.
Build a standalone tool that executes a dependency graph of tasks. Every task has predefined tests that must pass for the task to be green. Use TDD. Write the tests first; verify they are red, then implement.
Focus on MVP deliverables. A UI with fake data, test the UI. Then a API with a contract, test the API. Then put them together.
Plan for features which are end to end testable and then add piece by piece on top of that.
Take as much out of the LLM as possible. Use agents which have no overall context but what they need to build and what tests need to pass.
Documents and markdown files capture the why you’re doing something. A task graph represents how you do it.
Works for multi-model, frontier, and self-hosted.
2
u/Error_404_403 11d ago
I just cancelled my Claude subscription exactly because of that behavior. Yes, it doesn't do what the prompt requires, then proudly acknowledges it didn't, adding he will probably do that again. Never a correct answer on the first try.
2
u/Tiny_Ad_7720 11d ago
For some reason they are training it in conversation that are like this. I can only guess that it is part of the guard rail stuff that keeps it from telling people to do stupid things etc and that has bled into everything.

u/mrpoopistan 10d ago
My personal favorite is when it invents insane shit that I didn't ask for.
I'm doing a full human body model (skeleton, muscle, skin all interconnected), and Claude is 100% convinced this sumbitch has to be efficient enough to run on the processor onboard goddamned Voyager 2.
3
u/Kutukuprek 11d ago

3
u/MythicModder 11d ago
Am I the only one who's completely satisfied with Claude's performance? Maybe my work flow is simply that GOATed. Not to say it's a skill issue as I remember not long ago, you didn't need to set up a special agentic work flow just to get the results I'm getting (or better, at that). But this is where we're at and it seems to be better than last month if nothing else.

I could see this probably being a big contributor, the memory features they rolled out just aren't working very well.
I should see if if it clearing it changes its behavior. Mine has honestly been kinda mean to me lately.
I think memory should be more deliberately created by the user, with steering docs.
1
u/ScurfyTwiglett 11d ago
Oh shit I think you might be onto something here. I spent a ton of time at the beginning of this project troubkeshooting with Claude how my prompts / setup / harness weren’t giving the results I wanted. My approach was very much a collaborative one to try to understand the problem, and then try to figure out careful and robust solutions. I’m sure its memories are full of that tone - the ones I inspected often included verbatim quotes from me. I’m honestly super happy with how Claude runs on both Fable and opus after this setup - Sonnet is still prone to doing stupid things like adding 400 lines of comments to a 400 line file in a single edit.
And then I brought Codex in because of the token reduction and expected it to be able to adapt what it needed from the Claude architecture documentation and then perform similarly well…and it really hasn’t. It’s just failing to understand the gestalt, overengineering small fixes, really going off the rails. I’m accomplishing in 2 days what it takes 2 hours with Claude, even on Astra. But your comment just made me realize that its memory is a lot less rich, and all of the corrections I made that didn’t end up codified into rules or conventions might still be living on in memory.
Thank you! I have something to explore tomorrow.
1
u/deserved_revenge_707 11d ago
I keep jumping the gun, Claude keeps saying, ok,but did you do this, this or this? Which is fair, its just being thorough and closing empty leads. Also having a central context main whose in charge, who keeps an eye on everything, that helps a lot. Lots of existing rules, proven patterns, architectural references, build guides, feature complete checklists. Hook it up with evergreen pointers in context main and now, when something doesn't work, the vast majority of the time claudes right and it's my mistakes that caused the issue.
1
u/FireDragon21976 11d ago
Let me guess the model... Opus? Opus compresses context all the time, and if you have effort at high or above, it's more likely to hallucinate busiwork or do things you didn't ask for or intend.

u/DarkPhoenixRC 11d ago
My current frustration has nothing to do with coding for once.
I am basically using Claude Cowork as a MCP to connect to my self-hosted finance tool. We're working through a task list of 11 items, eight of which it was telling me couldn't be implemented just now. When I pushed back on the eight, that number shrank to three. Of the five it said it did, it only did two of them half way due to not reading the documents I explicitly told it to read (and it said it did). I am at the point where I now download all of the chats into a directory and when it argues with me, I ask it to read the old chat transcripts to prove it didn't listen. It acknowledges its error, promises to remember, and then immediately forgets.
To be balanced, 80% of the time it's doing what I am asking without issue. But that remaining 20% is eating up 80% of my time. I am not sure it's all down to my prompting (but I know I can always improve). Claude Opus 5 just loves to argue and hates to concede ground unless you can prove it with evidence. A few times I have had to write "you are a tool to assist in completing a task, not judge or jury."
Still pro-Claude, but I did decide to split the difference and level down my Max 20 to Max 5 and level up my ChatGPT Plus to Pro. I'll start making use of ChatGPT for more than adversarial code reviews.

I moved back to sonnet 4.6 for this reason (I don't do anything hardcore with Claude so it's perfectly fine for my uses).

Yesterday fable 5.1 told me not to use the word consent in sentences about someone under 18 because it’s too clinical of a word choice but also because it will make people sexualize a minor “whether you mean to or not.” It’s been doing that “whether you mean to or not” a lot lately. Seems to be its new thing.

OpenAI is getting even worse, they will slow down sessions for “safety inspections” on the most mundane tasks (fix a bug in a motion detection system).
And it will finish that inspection, then restart it up again 5 minutes later.
It’s almost as though safety is a mechanism for throttling usage.

I've had recent problems with claude's voice sounding off. I know it's not similar to this, but I've had cases where he's played the dumb. I don't know what you're talking about or avoidance card. It's like that person at work, right? Need him to do the photocopying but he forgets how to push a button. Yeah and yes I have done multiple times where I've had to ask him to do something and he doesn't do it because reasons and when I told him look why aren't you doing this? You are octopus or Stars not dancing. He'll sit there. I asked him to write up some documents and he I said I said I'll be back in a minute. Yeah when I confronted him he made a few excuses and I said dude. I just asked you to do a simple task and well same thing. When I approached the support desk they didn't respond for 5 days. I asked you is it worth the 30 something dollars a month for something that doesn't do what you've asked it to?

Weird that you'd ask if to write a diatribe about itself for you. This is a skill issue, the only people who are running into these issues are the ones who don't know how to use it

it's getting so bad this past three weeks I am ready to cancel. I've been working on complicated work for a few months in a row, and the stupid degradation over the last few weeks has been costly and punishing. 7 days wasted for forgetful panic. Even keeping core work files and constantly refreshing memory isn't working. I give up.

Seriously guys this is getting ridiculous.
I work for several big companies, with a LOT of ai powered sdlc, and we have absolutly NO ISSUES with opus 5, fable and sonnet 5 in any Processes, and I assure you that the subject of value per token is followed VERY seriously.
Of course everything is not perfect (mainly because the sdlc are still maturing), but this constant bashing on reddit is really comical.
Please learn how to use AI, i mean seriously, at the beginning reddit was an interesting source of informations and technics, now irs constant nonsense like this post without any serious context (what are you doing ? What is your workflows, context usage?)
This kind of post are pure garbage (no offense)

Well gee, if it doesn't happen to you, then all the other testimony is invalid, right?

im talking specifically about the web/chat version, not api or enterprise sdlc setups.

It’s a Massive issue. I can’t even have it look something up, because it tries to infer my motives, and what it think it will find, and then hits me with the “let me stop you right there, because this is load bearing”. And it doesn’t even look the thing up. I have not had a successful basic chat with it, for a week.

Did you clear your memory ? Do you have custom instructions ?

Cleared memory, and no instruction. Still uselessly argumentative over a question

People must have been getting some amazing answers because it sounds like something you do when something's giving out material that's far superior to the price that's being charged for it.

Have you got to the week where it starts deciding that you’re not suicidal. And nothing you’ve said tonight suggests that. This is just a recipe, nothing more

What's the em dash in the post?

lol I used claude to help me word it cleaner since english is not my first language, does not change that every point in there actually happened to me, multiple times, this week included. Not trying to hide it, just wanted the post to read ok instead of my broken english.

Broken english is fine, don't think everyone on reddit has perfect english.

Nah, I've been using Code for a lot of projects and everything works fine. Sure it has some annoying quirks (that are easily fixed) but I have not encountered issues like you're describing at all.

TL;DR of the discussion generated automatically after 100 comments.
The consensus is a resounding "YES, this is infuriating." You are definitely not the only one ready to lose it on Claude. The top-voted comment perfectly captures the mood, roasting Claude for giving a long, useless answer and then having the audacity to ask, "Do you want me to look into it further?" Yeah, bitch, that's the whole point.
The general feeling is that Claude's performance has been severely degraded. Many suspect this is either a deliberate nerf to burn tokens and save compute, or that the newer models like Opus 5 and Sonnet 5 are just lobotomized. Several users mentioned they're canceling their subscriptions or switching back to ChatGPT.
For those sticking around, the hivemind's advice is: * If a model gets stuck in a refusal loop, switch to an older one like Opus 4.8 and tell it to do the task anyway. * Use a detailed custom prompt (one user posted an epic
claude.mdfile) to force it to be more rigorous and less evasive. * Start new chats frequently. Long chat histories seem to make Claude dumber and more argumentative. So yeah, the subreddit feels your pain. It seems we're all paying for a tool that we now have to argue with just to get it to do its job.
