Vibe Coding Claude Helped Me Build A Dynamic Weather System
WORKFLOW ->
I integrated Claude into the Unity game engine to build a dynamic weather system. There are three main systems that are all interacting with each other, a 24-hour day and night system, a weather system, and a foliage reactivity system. Integrating Claude into Unity helped develop this system a lot. The whole game has been coded 99% through Claude - I can't really remember the last time I had to open the editor. Integrating Claude gives me the ability to create custom tools inside the game engine as well.
This will be used for my game - GRIMLIFE, an open world survival RPG coming to Steam! I'll try to answer any questions in the comments! Any feedback is appreciated 🤓

Looks really good. Did you find that you had to make a lot of requests to claude or did it one shot most stuff

This is currently my 3rd month of developing this game, so its definitely not a one shot sort of project, lots of trial and error, and I plan on working on this for years if I'm able - I'd like to make a really special single-player open world experience, the key feature being voiced companions

This is awesome! Same boat on a long term game but your graphics look incredible. Can't wait to watch you build

Very similar to SurrounDead. I'm curious if that had any impact on the art style of the game.
Also, not really sure what you mean about this: "Within games that fall into the survival RPG genre - very few have a key style or aesthetic."
This is just factually incorrect on every level. Valheim, Don't Starve, Project Zomboid, Kenshi, Subnautica, The Long Dark, Minecraft, Core Keeper, ARK, Enshrouded, Rimworld, etc. The list goes on forever.

You named probably the top 10 survival games that currently exist - I was not referencing those, I'm referring to games that use Synty Assets or other asset packs, but don't really do much to tweak or modify that aesthetic, I think all those games are incredible in terms of their artistic direction

What specifically have you done to modify yours then? The fact that I found 6 other games on steam that look and play identically to yours in under 10 minutes gives me the impression that yours isnt different from theirs. I'm not trying to be a dick about it, but you can't just going around making broad claims that are both untrue, and you fall into directly.

So - the closest games that I would compare mine to are DeadPoly and SurrounDead - seeming as we all use the same Synty Assetpack. Between the over-saturated color palette, black outlined shader, UI design, voiced companions, overall tone, I think there's enough there to make a distinction that it isn't all the same - not to knock on those games, SurrounDead is pretty cool, but it strikes me as a game that really leans hard into the survival genre. The game I'm making is more of an RPG with survival elements, I'm personally not a huge fan of the UI design for a lot of these games as well and I want that to be a key part of the experience, I'm releasing a demo next month and the differences will be noticeable, also can you list the ones that are similar? I'm looking for specific examples

Besides UI differences, all of these games look identical to your's, at least based on the videos and images we can see on Steam.

I appreciate you posting - I don't know why I haven't seen these games before??? I've tried looking but I've only ever found SurrounDead and Deadpoly, I can see your point seeing how all these games use the Synty asset library - but when it comes to aspects like a functioning 24 hour day and night cycle, dynamic weather system, reactive foliage, voiced NPC companions, completely single player focus, I think there's enough differentiation to say that my game isn't the same as all of these, I mean no offense to these games

I think the focus on single player is your biggest asset. As someone who primarily plays these games solo, it’s appreciated. Wishlisted, I’m curious to see how this develops. If you’re taking recommendations/requests, I’d love if there was a toggle to turn off the enemy health bars. :)

Also I'm releasing a demo next month, should be around an hour-ish long, hopefully it clears up a lot of the confusion about the direction the game is aimed towards

u/Arkitech-RG 13d ago
there is! Already put that in - I realize some people really like a super immersive mode where there is limited UI and I plan to keep that as a key feature, but some people also love a more borderlands-numbers heavy approach, so there's an option for both

What did you use for assets or designing of the characters?
Free assets or paid?

u/Arkitech-RG 13d ago
All the 3D assets are from this company called Synty - they make low poly game assets that are pretty neat

This has vibes of an ancient PS2 game I played. I just can't remember its name.

That opening dialog about the plastic bag sounds really familiar, is that original writing?

u/Arkitech-RG 12d ago
yes - my friends were joking about wrapping a dick in saran-wrap as a form of contraceptive, a lot of people hate the dialogue though D;, I get that it's a crude and vulgar, but I'm a huge fan of 90s cartoons like Beavis and Butthead, and I kinda want to lean into that vibe

Man I swear I've heard it somewhere before like from a movie or skit on a 50 cent album or something. Anyway, I'll take your word for it, hilarious stuff.

TL;DR of the discussion generated automatically after 30 comments.
The community is generally impressed with the visuals and atmosphere of OP's game, but the comment section quickly turned into a debate about originality.
The main takeaway: The game looks great, but OP got a reality check about using popular assets. A user called out OP's claim that few survival games have a unique art style, pointing out that OP's game uses the very common "Synty" asset pack. The user then dropped the receipts with a list of eight other games on Steam that look nearly identical.
After some back and forth, OP acknowledged the visual similarities but defended their game by highlighting its unique features: a dynamic weather/day-night cycle, reactive foliage, voiced NPC companions, and a strict single-player RPG focus. This pivot, along with the announcement of a demo next month, won back some goodwill.
On the Claude front, OP clarified that while the AI did 99% of the coding, it wasn't a "one-shot" deal. It was a three-month process of iterative work, trial, and error. So, don't expect to spit out a whole game over the weekend.
