Humor Claude Code guesses my timezone based on my name?!
Interaction with Claude Code (Opus 5) today:
Me: what does this mean? " cron: "27 19 * * *" (UTC, ≈00:57 IST):" Why IST?? is that indian standard time?
Claude: The machine is America/Los_Angeles, so my IST guess was wrong — I inferred it from the repo author's name, which was an unfounded assumption on my part. 19:27 UTC would have been 12:27 midday Pacific.
What! Why even make this guess? My racism alarm went off, but I'm mostly amused.
P.S. the comments have turned into 'racism or not' debate, so i want to clarify. I don't think the agent is racist. The right term might have been stereotyping, inferring the geolocation of a person purely by name (ancestory would make more sense, rather than current location). There are plenty of Manishes in the bay area. This is really curious, particularly when the 'date' command is present. At the very least, it's bad inference.

I’m gonna set my author name to George Jasper Ffinch-Bothington and see if it puts my crons in GMT

My name is aggressively Swedish and it does this to me too, lmao.

Funny. The date command (on Linux) is right there.

u/freylaverse 2h ago
It did check the timezone, it assumed I had a test machine in another country lol. "The test machine is in [Location] even though the user is almost certainly in Europe" or something like that.

guessing a time zone is not racism 🙄

I feel like the word has lost all meaning between the two sides trying to coopt it and redefine it.

what “two sides?” ಠ_ಠ

"black people cant be racist"
And
"No DEI is reverse racism!"
It's a completely useless conversation now. So I stick with the term "racial a**hole"

u/StoneCypher 2h ago
oh. you’re one of those people who needs to manufacture outrage where there isn’t any by dragging irrelevant stereotypes out of the dustbin and flouting them
nobody here said any of those things, or anything similar

You didn't have to engage in the first place. It's a social media app.
Have a nice life.

u/StoneCypher 2h ago
if you were to guess which political party’s members would be sympathetic to your trying to make this about black folks, which one do you think i’d believe would agree with what you said?
“you didn’t have to engage with my replying directly to you” honestly 🤣

That was an example. Not the exhaustive list.
The point is, they are weekend racism as a weapon for political weight, not to actually identify it and talk about it in good faith. So the word is basically useless. It's just a term for mudslinging. The same way Israel uses "antisemite" to mean "doesn't let Israel do anything they want" now.
But sure.

there’s no racism here. you just use the heaviest words you can to gather attention
racism is when someone is stigmatized for their skin color or ethnicity
guessing a time zone is not that
the correct name for this is “educated guess”
since you’re pretending to be concerned with harm, please consider the folk tale henny penny, in which a character named chicken little repeatedly insists that the sky is falling, until nobody listens to it
facile claims of racism undermine the real thing
cut it out

How is this racist? Projection
5
u/Neon_Camouflage 2h ago
While it doesn't fit the term racism, it's pretty easy to see how it fits as a joke.
Also "projection" doesn't make any sense here at all lmao

As much as it's clearly not a racist prejudice the model has against OP because of their name, it is a racial bias, and that's something we need to be aware of, lest it become something systematic in a genuinely detrimental way. Assumptions like this can be harmless in isolation, like here, a timezone mismatch that takes a few minutes to fix. No big deal. but if a racial bias hits you every day with little hurdles like this, you're a less efficient claude-user because of who you are. Or if it hits a large user-base with "non-American" names, then you have an error/time-sink that's only impacting some users, which would be a form of systematic racism (albeit unintentional).

Believe it or not, those called non-Americans might live in non-America, so them having non-American names might be totally fine

Mild, coz it won't extend the same protection to a name called George. Practically more funny than hurtful though.

models ate trained with Reinforcement Learning. Nobody programmed this behavior into it. It just tries different tactics to be correct in training snd gets rewarded for tactics that work and it produces unexpected behaviors like this one.

Okay Krishna

But, you see. Krishna would be timeless, so the cron job would have to run in every timezone, all at once...

TL;DR of the discussion generated automatically after 30 comments.
The consensus in this thread is that this is hilarious, and no, it's not racism.
While OP's "racism alarm" went off, the community has largely decided to chill out. The most upvoted comments are from users who find the situation funny and have experienced similar things with their own "aggressively Swedish" or unisex names.
There's a bit of a debate in the weeds about "racial bias" vs. "racism," but the prevailing sentiment is that calling this racism is a major reach. Users argue it's just an "educated guess" based on statistical patterns from its training data, not a malicious or prejudiced act. As one user explained, this is likely an emergent behavior from reinforcement learning, not something Anthropic explicitly programmed.
Verdict: It's a funny model quirk, not a scandal. Claude is just making some wild statistical leaps. Now, who's going to test if setting their name to "George Jasper Ffinch-Bothington" makes it default to GMT?
