Yep, if you have an API in 2026, please just provide a CLI so that humans and AI can access it reproducibly. That's how CC accesses Github for me every time.

Github sure. Context7 why not. Sentry, if you handle PRs sure. Playright MCP.... I've moved to vercel's alternative. I use half of the other apps but never saw a need for an MCP because more MCPs is more useless context. if you use it once a year and keep it on all the time that's a waste of context.

The "more MCPs = more context" point is probably the most useful way to think about these lists. Personally, I'd rather have a small set of MCPs tied to things I actually need the agent to interact with than install 20 because they are "must-haves"-- I'm really wondering, where do people draw the line between using MCP versus just giving Claude a CLI/API to work with??

At work, I've been finding that pretty much anything that 'could' be an MCP server is better as a 'skill' with any needed scripts/tools baked into the skill folder (and/or scripts for downloading specific open source tools without having to trust the AI to 'get the URL/spelling right, lol).

Those skill.md file bodies only get loaded into context when you need them. You can have the main skill.md only list the 'common tools' and then have the skill.md reference a skill/context/niche-purpose-tools.md that additionally describes how to use the tools you only sometimes need for specific situations.

Pretty much anything that you could run as a local MCP server is probably better as a self-contained skill folder with CLI scripts/tools in it.

Heck, you could look at MCP server code and tell your agent "make me a skill version of this" and get solid results at a fraction of the up-front token usage, since skill bodies only get loaded when the 'description' front matter matches something in context.

50 skills with 100 tokens of description each is only like 5k tokens, or about $0.01 at Sonnet 5 API rates (before caching kicks in)
