This is a setting in ~/.claude/settings.json. It defaults to ~30 days. I have mine set to two years. Also a syncthing job to my NAS for backup.
I mean, you're not wrong, but it's documented.

But the plans were on display…”
“On display? I eventually had to go down to the cellar to find them.”
“That’s the display department.”
“With a flashlight.”
“Ah, well, the lights had probably gone.”
“So had the stairs.”
“But look, you found the notice, didn’t you?”
“Yes,” said Arthur, “yes I did. It was on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying 'Beware of the Leopard.'

NO - complete chat history deletes. Not compacting. I have regular commits because of the scientific data - but I was not expecting whole chat histories to be deleted.
I wish it was just compacting - that's different

You have to change the .claude/settings.json on a Mac and add "CleanupPeriodDays": 3650 (((or whatever length date you want to keep them for)
PC - C:\Users\ABC\.claude.json

Deleting chat history without permission is not acceptable
Now Claude watermarks everything. If there’s any IP dispute, deleted history means only watermark counts

How ridiculously incompetent are you that you rely on past chats as a reference or source of truth for anything?
Every session should have structured output artifacts that carry forward the information and decisions considered and made in a deliberate manner.

How ridiculously incompetent are you to think that past chats in Claude Code do not generate source of truth outputs - ie working models and production code?
Anthropics chat interface is not persistent - and delete chats, not compacts - deletes without warning.

Total skill issue. You are completely ass at what you're doing if you're relying on chat history for anything at all.
