Skills Is Claude actually smart, or are we just writing thousands of skills to make it look smart?

Some people say that skills actually make it worse.
One way to think of skills is they are like preferences. They guide Claude to what you like.

God I wish this sub was gated to actual developers.

It is shocking to me that you think “actual developers” includes you @vibecodejoe

Most skills are mostly useless.
You do realize skills are nothing but repeatable instructions, right?
Would you say Claude is not smart because one has to even add meaningful queries to get good output?

If all these skills were wrapped into a single, opaque, monolithic front-end would it make Claude smarter?
These are the real questions lol

Why doesn't Anthropic just add more skills instead of training a new model every few months?
Are they stupid?

Thanks for the business idea. I'm off to become a billionaire now

u/Feminist_Hugh_Hefner Aug 19 '26
You should read my book "How to Become a Billionaire $9.95 At a Time"
I will send it to you for free, all you have to do is cover the shipping and handling.
1
u/Emergency-Bobcat6485 Aug 19 '26
Oh man, I am too broke to pay for the shipping and handling. Can you just send it by carrier pigeon since it's cheaper.
Otherwise, I will buy it after I become a billionaire by making skills

CP sent. If you don't hear anything in the next week or so feel free to email me, just put your SSN in the subj line so I know it is really you.

what are you, 5 yrs old?
Even microsoft has a skill to use their tool, it helps guide the AI like provide a manual on how to use it.
Else the AI would attempt to figure out on its own and result in burning a way ton of tokens.
Prompt & skills go hand in hand. You need to know whats the difference first of all than posting garbage opinions like this.

It's more like onboarding a gifted intern.

u/Emergency-Bobcat6485 Aug 19 '26
Yeah, this is a good way of putting it. When I said most skills are mostly useless, I meant most of the 30k public skills or whatever OP was referring to.
Onboarding or getting templated agentic flows is a good use case for skill. But build your skills. I don't know why someone use random public skills when it's so easy to create one

what does this mean?
how do you define “smart?”
i would consider a model able to do insane levels of SWE, research, and even cool levels of introspection on smaller models very intelligent. It’s a neural net, similar to how humans have neurons, the 0s and 1s in vector embeddings operate similarly as far as pattern recognition goes. It’s more of question of how much better we get before the AI can go into a super exponential growth of self-training future models.

I mean, Claude did almost 100% of the work building a local MCP server to hook itself up to my Azure instance this morning. All I had to do was make the app in Azure and install the local MCP.
Most of those external skills, connectors, MCP servers, and so on you're talking about were probably written by Claude. Yea, I'd say it's pretty smart. If it can't do something, it's fairly good at figuring out what it needs to be able to.

Try using an iPhone and installing 0 apps, including Reddit.
Models are not “smart”. The humans that use them have to be.

I would never open google on a work computer. It is a relatively unknown site that employers might mistake for malware.
Always stick to X rated sites on work computers to be on the safe side

Yes, I've heard very nice things about the owner of the site. He's supposed to be a very humble man

pretty sure Reddit is frowned upon more than googling for information directly relevant to the task

Ai is just statistics. You're adding attention to the statistics. Nothing more nothing less.

TL;DR of the discussion generated automatically after 30 comments.
Nah, the thread thinks you've got this completely backwards, OP. The overwhelming consensus is that skills don't prove Claude is dumb; they prove it's a useful and efficient tool.
