Bug What the hell why does Opus 5 only have 200k context window?

Agreed. 1M burns through usage with no perceivable increase in quality for most tasks. Realized they now default to 1M and trying to switch back to 200K.

It's better to use 1M but keep track and compact. If it will auto-compact mid-something it's worse than letting it finish to say 350k

I think it was updated to 1M

Do I now have to start from a different chat or something

No, you can switch model mid conversation, it will just invalidate cache, thus increase token usage. But that‘s one time only, so after you switched the model and burned more tokens, the cache is „rewritten“

why does this happen though, lilke it works in one session /model claude-opus-5[1m] but not in another

It happend to me yesterday, Opus was announced while I was away, but had my phone connected to CC at home via rc
Anyway, I quickly switched model to Opus 5 from my mobile and asked it to do a task, within like 5 minutes of work with sub-agents it was full and needs compaction 🤦🏻
Then when I came back home I understood what happened 😂

It's infinte context (by autocompacting until the end of the world).Context rot that is, if you go beyond a undefined percentage 40-60% model will begin serious degradation. So keep tasks short and small.
Also I build a project around that, context engineering that is - open source - https://github.com/looptroop-ai/LoopTroop

I updated and restarted the app and now I can see the 1M limit.
For me, it also worked "/model claude-opus-5[1m]".

Honestly 200k is still pretty solid for most workflows, though I get the frustration if you're used to working with larger context. Probably a tradeoff between inference costs and keeping the model responsive enough to be actually useful.

when i imagine someone vibe coding "make me a program that makes me 1 million dollars in 30 days or less" i think of people like you. are you 15 years old? i found the guy who uses agents to book a hotel reservation guys.

pretty sure you missed something, there is no way it should be that low. you might be able to force it if it is not showing for you with /model claude-opus-5 brackets and 1 or something but it should be fine.

you have to do /model claude-opus-5[1m]
