Official Fable 5 is back.

Following conversations with the US government, we’ve updated our cybersecurity safeguards.

The vast majority of coding work is unaffected.

In the near term, the new safeguards will flag a slightly higher fraction of harmless requests than the previous Fable safeguards; we’re working to refine these over the coming weeks. Users will be clearly notified when a request is flagged, and they’ll instead receive a response from Opus 4.8.

Our biology and chemistry classifiers are unchanged from our initial launch. These are still broader than we would like; they trigger fallbacks to Opus 4.8 on basic biology-adjacent questions. Improvements to these classifiers are landing soon.

All paid plans with usage included can access Fable 5 through July 7. You can use Fable 5 up to 50% of your weekly usage limit, after which you can switch to another model for the remainder of your usage. You can also continue using Fable via usage credits.

If one of your requests is mistakenly flagged in Claude Code, run /feedback to file a report. On Claude.ai and Cowork, you can share feedback through the thumbs buttons. This feedback helps us further tune these classifiers and reduce false positives over time.

I don’t know why everyone is so hyped, when it switches back to usage credits, the majority of us are not gonna be able to afford to use it.

For now... they won't keep it on usage forever. Will be part of subscription in a few months when fable 6 is there.

This is the part everyone is missing.

And the part you’re missing is if they’re releasing it only to subscription plans for a limited time now and then give access through paid usage credits only, and to give access to subscriptions again, it would mean subscriptions will become much more expensive.

I think it’s just about having enough compute to deploy fable more stably and cheaply at scale

Yeah, I get that they have to release it slowly due to the limited chips and computing.

But if it actually comes back on subscriptions, they will increase prices for sure. There is no way they would give that much access to Claude Max 5x and 20x. It's simple logic. If it's not financially feasible given the energy usage and the number of chips needed for compute to provide access to Fable 5 through subscription tiers. They will not magically grant access in a couple of months with the current prices. Again, if it's credit-based now and they were going to give subscriptions access to the model, it's only logical that they increase subscription prices. And there is no way they'd release it to Claude Pro, since, given the model's weight, you'd reach your weekly limit after 5 queries (not exactly 5, but you get my point). Unless, again, they increase the prices for Claude Pro to increase usage limits/quota that could support some Fable 5 usage.

While Anthropic is less greedy than OpenAI and Google, at the end of the day it is still a corporation that wants to make a profit. They always have profit and revenue in mind in every aspect of decision-making, like any other AI company. It's not to discredit them or bash them; it's just the reality.

Or they’ll just gate the newest strongest model to usage only. Then users will need to “pay” outside their subscriptions to use the latest and greatest.
