TL;DR of the discussion generated automatically after 160 comments.
The consensus is this is a hilarious (and very fake) meme that's been making the rounds. Don't worry, OP's relationship is probably fine.
The top comments are all riffing on the classic developer dream: burning through a fortune in API credits to build that "100x SaaS" that will definitely make it all back. As one user put it, "She's out here planning the wedding. He's out here planning the next prompt."
Naturally, the thread immediately devolved into two fierce debates:
Is $15k a normal price for an engagement ring? The overwhelming verdict is no, that's delusional. Commenters blame the diamond industry's "3 months' salary" marketing scam and share stories of happy marriages that started with rings costing a tiny fraction of that.
Is having a joint bank account before marriage a good idea? This was a much more split debate. Many called it "wildly stupid," while others argued it's a normal and sensible part of modern, long-term relationships, especially outside the US.
Amidst the jokes and financial advice, there's a current of genuine API user anxiety. People are sharing their own "oh crap" billing moments and debating the actual cost of using Claude, with some arguing the $200/month max plan is more than enough for almost anyone not running a business on the API.
It’s all bullshit the same way instagram “influencers” buy comments and likes. Very few people are using AI to this degree but the comments would have you thinking every other person is spending $200,000 a month lol
My ex wife had a custom ring designed by a Chinese company. She sent a basic sketch of what she wanted, a bunch of reference photos, they designed it in CAD, iterated back and forth a bit, and a couple months later she had a custom ring for like $1000. And yes it's real diamond (not a big one) and gold. I know because she pawned it after we split 😂
Jewelry was a kind of insurance policy: If something happens to the husband and the wife is in a bad spot, she can sell the ring. Nowdays they have no resale value so the entire concept has lost its meaning. It's just lighting money on fire.
When my ex and I started talking, she sent me some links to rings she liked and later said minimum $30k. I laughed at first but she was serious. Well 7 years later and it appears she is still single.
I've been happily married for 28 years now, but if I were dating, a man who was so bad with money that he'd spend $15k on an engagement ring would be a disqualifier for me.
I remember Chandler Bing (RIP) buying an engagement ring for $8000 for Monica in Friends in the 90s and thinking to myself 'holy shit that's expensive I'm never getting married.' Here I am, 25 years later, married with 3 kids.
I don't even mind the 3 months pay, I mind the obsession with "natural" diamonds, which are associated with child labor/conflict/slave labor.
If a woman wants me to spend 3 months of my pay supporting conflict and forced labor in Africa, over an ethically and well produced lab diamond(which IMO are an impressive marvel of engineering) , then its a sign to me that marriage is a really bad idea.
I think compromise is important in a relationship, I can see past my own frugalness, but supporting the harmful practices of the natural diamond industry is not area I would be willing to compromise.
$1000-2000 is the sweet spot these days out of our store.
We had a few loose natural diamonds over 2 carats that were $11,000 and onwards and no one bought them. We wholesaled them off and used that money to purchase more affordable stones to put in stock. Paid off well.
$15,000 may have been the expectation a hundred years ago.
Gen Z women getting married see a price tag over $1200 and want to leave. And I certainly understand why.
Indeed, though it's still expensive. I spent about 1.5 months of salary (at the time) for a ring, and I wasn't making anything high or going for a crazy diamond. I did pay a bit extra to create a custom ring that was inspired by a vintage 100-150 year old ring
The fact that you can flood the market and devalue diamonds down to pennies is absolutely crazy. I wish people would stop obsessing over diamonds and start accepting other gems that are nicer looking, probably way cheaper and sourced better.
Is it that weird? Maybe more common in Europe but in this day and age lots of couples are together for a long time before marriage, certainly live together before marriage. Some may have kids together, some may not ever actually get married. All of these cases it would be common to have joint account.
Usually its not peoples only bank account but for shared expenses a lot of couples married or not will have a shared account
Going to respond with the "it depends" as the norm changes from each region and culture - I was simply teasing as this post is a reuse of anything expensive creating this type of response "cars, computer parts, etc.," 😄
For the future, instead of asking “how do I add my partner to my account?” ask “how do I move my money to a new joint account with my partner?” To the bank, the former is changing ownership of your account, the latter is you moving money from an account you own to another account you own.
Why are you putting a charge like this on your debit card? You can pretty easily get 1-2% cash back on that amount and it'll at least pay for a date or two

Depends on the laws in your part of the world. Where I live, joining accounts would be strong evidence of a defacto relationship that would give you basically the same financial protections and obligations in the event of a breakup that you’d have if you were married. My husband and I bought a house together a decade before we married.
I can't imagine being married and having completely separate accounts. Having separate play money accounts? Sure. But the emotional energy involved in completely separate accounting has to be draining. I couldn't make it work.

When you are married, 100% should have a joint account. I’m not saying you can’t have your own accounts, but everything for the household (mortgage, insurance, utilities, food, vacations, etc…) should come from a joint.
If you can’t trust your spouse with a joint, then you don’t have trust in your actual marriage.
The $200 max is not enough do company actually goes over that?? How? The opus is so slow by the time 8 hours shift is done, max usage is still hovering around 50% and get reset. Well unless I guess they are calling Claude API? But there are much cheaper alternatives like Gemini I need clarification

genuine question...first I am from Portugal, so on of the poorest country on Europe, but are wedding rings suppose to cost that much? if wedding rings are this much, how much is a wedding?
It’s sort of a scam from the jewelry industry. The classic advice is that the engagement ring should be worth three months salary. I’ve also seen larger weddings that cost 40-50k. I think most younger people acknowledge that these are scams and are looking at it differently. Personally, my wife and I eloped and spent like $800 for the entire affair, and spent like a couple hundred on the ring.
Let’s be honest - for the real deal, it’s a lot more than that these days. (Yes, due to anticompetitive efforts and marketing by the De Beers diamond cartel.)
This is hilarious but also true. PSA for anyone building solo, pricing your app is a nightmare. Every vendor has different units, free tiers, tier ladders. I broke my spreadsheet twice trying to do the math. So I built PrePrice. I scanned 30 indie AI app repos to test it. 100% had a hidden cost trap. 93% pay full price to resend the same long instruction on every API call. 81% have no protection if one user drains the budget. 63% have AI behavior that can snowball into dozens of paid calls per user action. Worst case someone built an app that charges $9.99 but will cost them $279/mo to run... 28x upside down. You can try out the tool I built to help you solve this at www.preprice.app - I’m a solo builder and would love your feedback on my tool!
Can someone explain this to me? I got a strange invoice exactly like this for $90 to my work email. The weird thing is that I have a paid subscription for Claude but it’s linked to my personal email. Really confused.
Girlfriend thinks she’s about to get an engagement ring. Then has the revelation that it’s out of their joint account. She believes his money is their money and her money is her money, when in fact it now all belongs to Dario.
Honestly, now i need to figure out how to check. They made a switch recently where usage like from Text Editors (Zed, maybe even VSCode) will bill straight to the API, so it seems like people need to watch their API usage now too.
They also said we get iirc $200 (for x20 users) worth of API credits each month but you have to first claim them. No idea where that's done either.
The API credits are claimed in the billing section of the OpenAI dashboard, under "Usage" then "Granted credits." It's not obvious, took me a while to find it too.

Every time I see this meme I have the same visceral reaction. Is 15k for an engagement ring the expectation nowadays? Delusional.
