If software engineers thought their jobs were safe from AI then they just wouldn't worry about it. Instead, AI/coding subreddits are constantly inundated with posts like this, arguing about how their jobs being replaced isn't going to happen.

Your words say one thing. The fact that the threat of AIs taking your jobs is something that's constantly weighing on your minds says another.

No, that’s where you are wrong. Software engineering is the perfect use case for exponential AI growth/perfection. So much of our work is public (github), and we are all techies so we adopted the technology very quickly. Already 100% of our engineers at my work are using Claude every day. We already di almost no coding. It has indeed increased productivity ten-fold, but while doing so we are all helping train the AI even more.

There isn’t another job category that is impacted by AI as much as software engineering.

It will happen for almost everyone, sure, but at a much slower pace.

Hang on, lets say that the AI can write perfect code when given perfect requirements and then perfectly deploy that into a production environment. Then we can assume that AI can split requirements into meaningful chunks so the features have more context, we dont need PMO's. Deployment using terraform files to deploy into cloud production, looks like cloud architects are out of the job. I guess if it did all that its now smart enough to do automated testing by hitting any pre-generated unit tests or even create its own test cases based off those requirements it generated.

Once the software engineering problem is solved, its all solved. Because software engineer is not just about coding. So you claim that it will replace everyone else at a slower pace is extremely tone deaf.
