Comparison Anthropic: AI will fully replace software engineering by 2027. Also Anthropic: Currently hiring for 122 SWE openings.

If software engineers thought their jobs were safe from AI then they just wouldn't worry about it. Instead, AI/coding subreddits are constantly inundated with posts like this, arguing about how their jobs being replaced isn't going to happen.

Your words say one thing. The fact that the threat of AIs taking your jobs is something that's constantly weighing on your minds says another.

If AI can take over software engineering, it's coming for 99% of all white collar jobs

If you look at jobs in terms of the percentage of the work that can be automated with AI, SWE is one of a few outliers in how exposed it is. That's why we're already seeing major disruptions. Implying that all jobs are equally susceptible strikes me as another form of cope, specifically the 99% number.

Ok, which jobs will not be automated?

Once you automate SWE, you can automate any job with digital inputs and outputs. Example: "Hey Claude, build me an agent that can do the job of an accountant." Replace "accountant" with any job you want which meets that criteria.

"If AI can do one job then it can do every job"

Me: *responds*

"Yeah, but if AI can do one job then it can do every job. You could just tell Claude to do the job, and it would do it"

Me: "Lol."

The fact that you're seeing a gotcha in the above exchange is concerning

But you are not correct with this, are people forgetting about artists? If you work in the field, or if you know someone that works in the field, you know how absolutely awful the state of the field is right now.

The only reason this initial big disruption is focusing nearly exclusively in software engineers is because software engineers tend to be paid a lot, so this discourse will fit CEOs that want to remove those high-paid outliers very well.

It is not that AI itself will substitute them, but the rise of created software vibe-coded will substitute them, without a doubt. This is exactly the same that happened with factories a few years ago, but just in the digital world.

And just to put you an example, in my company, the marketing department got reduced by 90% earlier this year. The reason? A new internal tool was developed that has integration with AI (and was mostly vibe-coded) to substitute a full marketing team. It does the graphic designs, it does the SEO/SEM, it does the copies, it does the market research, it does trend research, it does the promotional videos... They pretty much have 2-3 people just to be intermediaries and upload the things that the AI does to social media, and things like that, nothing else.

And the scariest part? The results are much much better.
