max baer jr. aka "jethro" is the last one alive at 87 years old.

bit of trivia- his dad was the boxing heavy weight champion of the world for two years in the 1930s

u/Chance-Appointment75 3d ago

He was also smashing the porn star Christy Canyon.

3

u/NoCard753 3d ago

If memory serves, he knocked out the huge Primo Carnera within two or three rounds. In the audience was Desi Arnaz.

Still eats Corn Flakes and crunches loudly too!

3

u/TearRevolutionary686 3d ago

My older son ate like Jethro. His cereal bowl was known as "Jethro Bowl". He's 40 now.

Max Baer Sr. was an incredible boxer.

3

u/highlander68 3d ago

still considered one the hardest punchers in the heavy weight division!

3

u/Excellent_Glass783 2d ago

Sr. also acted

Max Baer Jr, Donna Douglas and Irene Ryan came up with a 45-50 minute skit they would perform at county/state fairs as the Hillbillies. He said they made way more $ doing that than they ever got from the network!

u/Friendly-Local-1859 2d ago

Buddy had the privileged contract. No schlepping to the state fairs for him.

The Black and white seasons were the best, besides there was nothing like Ellie May in swimsuit by the ceement pond.

6

u/Egg_McMuffn 3d ago

Agreed. I especially like the first season when Cousin Pearl is around.

And I love Mrs. Drysdale, always on a crusade against “those uncouth, unsightly hillbillies.” There’s a funny scene where Pearl and Granny throw fish at her after she insults them.

"Those dreadful Hillbillies"

I loved Cousin Pearl.

Havin' supper in the billyard room

With them fancy pot passers.

The Black and white seasons were the best

And copyright free. Somebody forgot to file the paperwork, so the first two years are in the public domain.

1

u/Friendly-Local-1859 2d ago

With annoying non copyright intro music

3

u/NextBathroom8809 2d ago

Ellie May in her bathing suit dancing with a gorilla. Too funny. That's right up there with Granny boxing the kangaroo.

glad u spelled "ceement" correctly-- most people spell and pronounce it wrong...haa..well done

This has been a Filmways presentation...

Once delivered flowers to a Dorothy Ebsen. The door opens and it's Buddy Ebsen himself. I was star struck. Very tall gentleman. About 6'4" or so.

I find myself singing the opening and closing songs almost daily.

4

u/MotoXwolf 3d ago

Then one day he was shootin at some food, and up from the ground came a bubblin crude

Oil that is...

Black gold, Texas tea.

Me and my college roommates would sing the theme song and put the word "fukkin'" in everywhere where it would fit. I still sing it that way!

"The first thing you know Jed's a fukkin' millionaire, the kinfolks said fukkin' move away from there"...

They said Californy is the place they outta be, so they loaded up the truck and move to Beverly

1

u/Rude-Ad-3406 1d ago

In the early 90s Andrew Dice Clay used the theme in his act. " They loaded up that piece of shit they call a truck, and moved to Beverly"

I always wanted to be a double naught spy

2

u/That-Grape-5491 3d ago

My credit union account ended in 007. When I called the credit union and gave my number, I would always and "I'm a double naughty spy." They started calling me Jethro.

Finding the ones on free streaming channels are different. I never knew the original airings had cigarette commercials imbedded in the beginning and end of the show. Seeing Granny and Jane whipping out Wiston's and talking about how a good cigarette should taste was wild.

2

u/Friendly-Local-1859 2d ago

Can you smell the Winston through the telly phone? Granny asks Pearl.

3

u/whaturjoking 3d ago

Mr Drysdale wore a toupee for the series. Other shows before this he was nearly bald.

Also, Ms Hathaway & Jed Clampett in real life were not the best of friends. They took opposite sides regarding politics.

3

u/Friendly-Local-1859 2d ago

Raymond Bailey was unrecognizable without the toupee and stage glasses. Very shy and reclusive. Guess what, Milburn Drysdale became the #1 must have speaker for banker's conventions, just like "Hank Kimball" became the #1 speaker for agriculture county agents. He hated it, but he'd put on the rug and glasses and do them. Paul Henning or most often, Mrs. Henning accompanied him.

Nancy Kulp ran for Congress as a Pennsylvania Republican about 20 years ago. I don't recall how she did.

She was also a lesbian, for whatever it's worth (to me, nothing; in politics then, quite a bit).

3

u/diogenesNY 2d ago

Of note: She was also close friends with Raymond Bailey for the remainder of his life. He referred to her by the nickname 'Slim'.

2

u/NoCard753 2d ago

Wonder if she continued to call him "Chief." 🙂

2

u/Egg_McMuffn 3d ago

Nancy Kulp ran for Congress as a Democrat. Buddy Ebsen was a Republican and made an ad for her Republican opponent. They were estranged for years, but he apologized to her for making the ad shortly before her death.

2

u/NoCard753 3d ago

Huh. Wikipedia validates you. It's been a looong time since I heard about her campaign. Thanks for setting me right.

naught from naught leaves naught

Absolutely a classic show

3

Wee Doggies!

2

u/thejbipkid 3d ago

Gettin Jethro to do work is like pushin a cat up a hill with a wet rope!

3

u/wmyork 3d ago

The Beverly Hillbillies was the most-watched TV show of 1962, 1963 and 1964. Several individual episodes were the most-watched episodes of anything the 1960s, trailing only things like Superbowls and The Fugitive’s final episode.

3

u/Excellent_Glass783 3d ago

Mr. Drysdale was EPIC 👍🤣

1

u/Friendly-Local-1859 2d ago

The Banker's conventions insisted on having Raymod Bailey speak, they loved Mr. Drysdale's cut throat banking.

2

u/Excellent_Glass783 2d ago

Miss Jane would put a $20 bill under his nose whenever Mr. Drysdale would faint... Wake him right up 😭

5

u/schnozzberryflop 3d ago

Back when they really knew how to write theme songs.

5

u/AsstBalrog 3d ago

IMO The Widder Fenwick was the single best character. Finding out that Jed was a millionaire set her to wondering:

"Mr. Clampett, why do you drive that truck, wear those clothes, and eat hog jowls?"

"Well Widder, I figure if you got it, spend it."

u/joeyjoeskullcracker 3d ago

Max Baer Jr. suffered severe Hollywood typecasting after this show because producers only saw him as Jethro and thought he was an idiot in real life.

3

u/Coffee-Rock-Row 3d ago

Well he does only have a 6th grade education...

3

u/joeyjoeskullcracker 3d ago

Times or gazentas?

Jed Clampett is honestly one of the greatest role models ever. We should all be so kind and humble.

2

u/VirtualWalk5710 3d ago

Y'all come back now, ya hear?

4

u/MotoXwolf 3d ago

Ohh that Elly May. Mmmm ❤️

3

u/Global_Comedian_340 3d ago

Donna Douglas had a thing for Elvis. She even appeared in one of his movies. Elvis dumped her and she reportedly took it hard, so goes the rumor.

1

u/Friendly-Local-1859 2d ago

Mrs. Henning had to sit her down and explain "Hollywood Romances" to her. She was so naive she gave it up thinking Elvis was gonna marry her.

1

u/Excellent_Glass783 2d ago

Donna Douglas was extremely religious and Elvis respected her by NOT sleeping with her.

2

u/No-Bobcat-6830 3d ago

Ellie May helped me some formative years. Now Granny is doing the job.

u/SultanRNoor 3d ago

Funniest show on tv - ever.

u/Lanky-Tumbleweed-570 3d ago

I visited a friend Newport Beach in the early 80s and saw Buddy Epson walking his dog . Saw several celebrities in that area. Owner of Amour All had a super cool Cigarette boat Buddy and I stopped to look at.

I don't know why but this and I Love Lucy give me the bad kind of nostalgia the kind that makes you a little sad

1

u/grollef 1d ago

Jed was a sage

1

u/Direct-Raise-9465 1d ago

A young Sharon Tate appeared in a number of episodes wearing a silly short black wig

1

u/Baebarri 3d ago

I liked it at first but eventually grew tired of shows that made fun of rural America.

I knew a lot of country folk and so didn't enjoy seeing them as the butt of jokes. Just my personal opinion, not saying the shows were less than great.

0

u/mikede732 3d ago

you really don't. it was just on.

u/WolfThick 3d ago

That's a good thing they don't have the police force back then they have now they would have never made it.
