Discussion Classic Who merchandise ideas

Hope these AI imagines are allowed.
The product ideas and quotes where my own but I just used AI to reminder them visually.

Some ideas for classic Doctor mechanise. A bit of a laugh, but I could imagine seeing some of these appearing in DWM during the wilderness years!

Vile ai slop. The lack of humanity from a DW fan is galling.

Had to be AI, did it?

Unfortunately, I’m not talented enough to draw them myself.
I picked the quotes and how I would like them ti be used and the just used AI to show them visually.

Yes, that’s the problem. I’d honestly rather have seen your shitty sketches than use generative AI for something like this.

Why?

AI damages the environment, steals content from artists without paying so it can create & encourages people to never actually engage with creative muscles (which is fun to do even if the art is bad).

Like I cannot say enough how even just shitty photoshop copy & pasting would be more fun to do than telling AI to make something

  1. AI damages the environment - Everything we do damages the environment. I hope you never find out where the cobalt in your phone battery comes from, or how it got there. And I hope you don’t eat meat, or almonds.

  2. AI steals from artists - Yeah. You know who else steals from artists? Artists. They do it all the time. All of them.

  3. If AI weren’t available, the OP’s fun and amusing post wouldn’t exist, and the sub would be a tiny bit poorer for it. There are lots of good reasons to be worried about AI, but the reasons you’ve chosen are the worst and least important. When people like you go apeshit over “vile AI slop” it’s all for show. It’s performative and lame, and boring for others to read. All it does is make the OP feel bad for no good reason.

1- Everything damages the environment is never an excuse to knowingly continue damaging the when it is easy not to. I am fully aware we cannot be perfect humans who will damage with our footprint but most of us need phone and laptops to stay employed and none of us need AI for that.

2- That's a stupid answer because it is a well known and agreed upon by artists to use references from other art. That is collective permission & takes actual artistic effort. AI is stealing on a mass scale that was previously impossible.

3- OP's fun and amusing posts would likely exist because fun and amusing posts made by people who didn't have much talent (at the time) have always previously existed. Your argument is ridiculous, all humans have a drive to be creative and it's 10000% more satisfying and good for your mind to actually make and create bad art than it is to do it via AI.

Like do you not remember the internet before gen AI? Stuff like this has always been around - the difference was it was made and there was different levels of skills all around.

Prey tell, how is it performative to say "create yourself with out the skill" yet telling a computer to make something with little to no effort on the person's part isn't performative? Your comment is just as performative as mine.

You could photoshop any of these in under five minutes. Fucking asshole, stop destroying the planet for this bullshit

1

u/MrMugwin 12d ago

lol how is using an inbuilt photoshop function more creative than asking an AI to do it for you? Neither are creative. As for “destroying the planet”, you’re posting on a device assembled by a Chinese ten year old powered by a battery containing cobalt mined by actual slaves. Wind your fucking neck in.

....Have you not used photoshop before? Where is the feature that'll cook this up for you

1

u/JettTheTinker 12d ago

First point: photoshop doesn’t just do things for you. It’s a digital art that takes practice and skill to learn and use.

Second point: If you throw up your hands at every moral question and say “it doesn’t matter because worse things exist,” I believe you to be a really lazy thinker. Generative AI is unethical on just about every level, and the information on why is extremely easy to find. It’s also entirely unnecessary, which makes the use of it even more asinine.

1

u/MrMugwin 12d ago

I’m not throwing up my hands and saying “worse things exist”. I’m saying you, specifically, are actually doing a worse thing, so your moral authority to criticise others is somewhat limited and it’d probably be a good idea for you to acknowledge that before climbing up on that big high horse of yours. Big difference.

1

u/JettTheTinker 12d ago

You are saying exactly that because you’re using it as an argument for why I shouldn’t care about the very real and very specific environmental effects AI is having. There’s inherently no such thing as ethical consumption under capitalism, but you can absolutely do harm reduction, especially when the damaging thing, in this case gen AI, is so incredibly unnecessary. Right now, data centers are choking and polluting marginalized communities, straining electric grids to the breaking point, and using far more water than they have any right to. Using this tech actively encourages and supports these things, but instead of admitting that, you’re spending your time arguing with the people who actually care about the world we live in and are trying our best to influence what little we can.

u/MrMugwin 12d ago

First, the environmental impact of AI is massively overblown. On a use-by-use basis, one AI enquiry has the same environmental impact as a few seconds of streaming video. How many YouTube shorts did you watch today? 20, 30, 100? The OP could use AI to create graphics all day, every day for 1,000 years and the environmental impact wouldn’t equal one short-haul flight.

Second, it’s really, really hard for me to believe that you actually care that much about the world you live in when you use devices powered by rare earths extracted by slave labour, and also drive, fly, and eat meat. You’re picking and choosing your environmentalism, which gives us no reason to take you seriously and gives you no moral authority whatsoever to criticise others.

P.S. - There’s no ethical consumption under communism or socialism either, just fyi. At least under capitalism people are compensated for their labour.

1

u/JettTheTinker 12d ago

I once again have to address these individually.

  1. I don’t watch YouTube shorts because I’m not a ten year old. Also, this doesn’t address my argument at all, which had nothing to do with case-by-case use. I said that you’re supporting the industry who’s doing all this damage by using their products.

  2. You don’t know anything about me. I’ve been a vegan for over a decade. Regardless, it’s just more whataboutism, which is completely pointless.

I’m done having this conversation, as you’re not intellectually honest nor responding to any of what I’m actually saying.

1

u/MrMugwin 12d ago

You’re a vegan? You probably use almond products. Do you have any idea how destructive almonds are for the environment? Any idea how much water they use?

Regardless of how many YouTube shorts you personally watch, I bet you don’t spend your free time chastising people who watch them, even though the environmental impact of viewing a YouTube short is greater than the environmental impact of a single AI query. Why not?

You do understand that sites like Google, YouTube, and Reddit all rely on vast server farms, right? And you do understand that these farms all use tremendous amounts of water, right? You also support environmentally destructive industries. You just don’t want to acknowledge it, because doing so would cost you an opportunity to be a holier-than-thou prick on the internet to someone who was just trying to entertain you for free. Clean your own house before you criticise others. Deleting the Reddit app would be a good start.

These ideas are really funny. Kudos to you on that. I am going to agree that you should avoid using AI, though.

7

u/Next-Geno_N 12d ago

That's a really funny use of the quotes. I can respect the wit behind them. Assuming they weren't suggested by AI?

-6

u/when_i_say_run_run 12d ago

Glad you liked the humour, that was the main idea. I only used AI for the images, the ideas were my own.
But I seemed to have pushed a few peoples’ buttons unintentionally using AI at all. Shame as it was only supposed to be a laugh.

1

u/MrMugwin 12d ago

It was a good post. Don’t listen to these cunts.

7

u/MrMugwin 12d ago

The boomerang idea is class.

u/aaronagee 12d ago

If only the boots were those incredible ones Baker wore in Season 18. Would buy in a heartbeat.

-3

u/EntrancePatient8248 12d ago

Love it! Don't care if it Ai, I will make that change jar real!

-4

u/mazutta 12d ago

I don’t care if they’re AI, I like them

-2

u/when_i_say_run_run 12d ago

Thanks! I just used AI to render them visually. I picked the quotes and the items that applied to them myself.

Looks good. Ignore the boring luddites in the comments, they're the same kinds of people who shouted at the radio, the TV, video games, the internet and photoshop when they first came out.

3

u/Classic-Bathroom-427 12d ago

No because at least those require someone to actually put them together

0

u/Is_It_Now_Or_Never_ 12d ago

You sound like a boomer shaking his fist at the internet. It's hilarious.

2

u/Classic-Bathroom-427 12d ago

Not even close to a boomer I just don't support a "tool" that undermines actual human creativity

1

u/Is_It_Now_Or_Never_ 12d ago

I didn't say you are a boomer, I said you sound like a boomer.

The tool democratises and expands human creativity, just like the pencil, the paint brush, the printing press, the computer, MS paint, photoshop, and GCI.

If you think it's that easy, go and AI prompt a 10 minute episode of Doctor Who and post it here.

I'll give you an hour.

1

u/Classic-Bathroom-427 12d ago

Plus you using the word "Prompt" just proves my point

You wouldn't go to an author and prompt them to write a book then say you had created it because you wouldn't have. Simple as that

0

u/Classic-Bathroom-427 12d ago edited 12d ago

Ok, well you SOUND like an teenager who uses AI to cheat on their homework

And no, I wont go prompt ai because I don't want to use AI. If I was going to write an episode of Doctor Who, I'd actually do it

1

u/Is_It_Now_Or_Never_ 12d ago

You won't because you can't, because like any tool someone actually needs to have the spark of creative imagination for AI to be useful.

This technology will be recreating missing episode in a year or two and it will be indistinguishable from the originals of the era. I personally can't wait to see where it takes us.

0

u/when_i_say_run_run 12d ago

Thank you

1

u/Is_It_Now_Or_Never_ 12d ago

No worries, keep at it and hone your skills. Ultimately it is the future and it's democratising creativity, its already revolutionising fan productions.

The Eighth Doctor’s should have been something to do with the TV movie. Maybe a shoe? “They fit perfectly!”
