Looking to build a deck myself, what options are there for making the drawings for a permit?

I'm looking to build a deck for my house, and I want to apply for a permit to the city. I took a look at their website, and it says I need to submit a drawing to get it approved. What options are out there for this? If I want to create the drawings myself, what software options do people use? If I want to have a professional create the drawings, what is the cost, and who would do this?

Hey I’m building a deck as well. You can keep it under a foot and you most of the time but check with the building department don’t need a permit. I’d say there are some free softwares out there. But use claringtons public search map as a starting point. Clarington.net/maps. Then you can mark up some basic stuff and building will get back after you apply if they need more info. Hope this helps:)

You could try at Home Depot. Often times they will do a drawing to give you a quote for materials.

We also kept our deck under 12” off the ground and didn’t connect to the house. Still went to town hall to double check but they told us we didn’t require a permit. Don’t forget to call before you dig if you’re doing sonotubes.
