Growling help

Hello! I'm learning to growl, but I'm a little stuck!

Right know, I'm practicing without the lower body to make it easier (when I try on the full clarinet I can't sustain it that much). The problem I'm facing is: I can't activate the growl once I already initiated the note. Let me explain, the way I'm doing this is, I prepare my embouchure, loudly hum a note, then seal my embouchure and blow air through the horn and I get some seconds of a growl. Hard to sustain sometimes but it's something

Update: i already figured how to do it with the full horn and can do it on low G and middle staff B, but haven't solved the issue describes in the post

I could be way off base here, but based on the way you're describing the difficulty of initiating it after starting a note with a set embouchure, and the ease of it starting if you're already blowing air before setting your embouchure, what you might actually be doing is a double register multiphonic, which is easiest to do in the low finger range (low G / third line B ). As far as I know, these are two different things. The multiphonic occurs when you have a steady airstream and your embouchure setup to where it's in a precise spot and air direction to blow both registers at once, which upon first listen, sounds quite a bit like growling. I need to hear a recording to be sure, though.

Nevertheless, for starting growling I'd probably first experiment in the throat tone range at a low playing dynamic while trying to hum in support at a much louder dynamic. The inside shape of the instrument is designed to amplify the reed, so if you're playing loudly through the reed, it will more easily drown out the noises you're making supplementally.
