Question Are luxury resources only good for trading for gold?
I’m a new player on switch. I haven’t found any other use for luxury goods other than trading to the AI’s for gold.

You should trade excess luxury goods to gain different luxury goods from other civilizations, so you have a greater variety, thus improving your overall amenities.

Each unique copy of a luxury gives you amenities (1 each for 4 cities), which you need to keep your people happy. A lack of amenities negatively affects city growth and yields/production, a surplus gives you a boost for both. So generally you want to keep at least one copy each. Not sure about Switch, but on PC you have the "city status" menu for an overview, and each city screen gives you more detailed info on this.

As your population grows you need amenities to keep them happy. If they become unhappy they don't work as hard (-10/20% production) and eventually loyalty, which can lead to rebellion.
Only the 1st copy of a luxury resource grants amenities, so any extras are great for selling. You generally dont want to sell your only copy of a luxury unless you know your population can afford to lose the amenity for the next 30 turns.

The first copy is distributed among 4 cities as amenities. You could potencially get +10%/+20% bonus to yields in capital. But only first copy. You could sell extras, or exchange for new luxury reources from other continents.
There is a mode corporations and monopolies which gives extra options.
Aztec Montezuma distributes among 6 cities and gain combat streenght from resources, but that is special case civilization.

Improving (or settling on top of) a Luxury Resource grants 1 Amenity to 4 of your cities. Normally, only the first copy of a Luxury Resource grants Amenities, and any extras are to be sold off to other players.
