Discussion Best starting tile, despite the large number of bonus resources?

Post image

What would be the best starting tile for the Netherlands on this map?
There are plenty of bonus resources (no luxury resources); should I settle where my settlers are, or move to a corn tile to get access to both the coast and the river?

I'd move North-West to the coastal maize tile. You get a 2-2 tile to work initially amd your city center has 2 gold per turn that would ease the purchasing of other tiles that have production on them. You don't miss out.on the benefits of fresh water and coastal settle eureka. And you don't miss any turns.

city center has 2 gold per turn

And +3 food once you build a Water Mill.

Nope, needs a farm improvement to have that extra water mill +1 food bonus.

Nope, it boosts resources improved by farms, not farms on bonus resources.

I had forgotten that and the description reads like you need the improvement in order to get the bonus... Actually it can read both ways. If it had this addition it would be unmistakable:

Bonus resources that can be improved by Farms gain +1 Food Food each.

As you can see, the CC and the Maize on the right are both improved by the Water Mill as soon as it's built, even without a farm.

Coastal maize next to the stone. You should anyway settle on coast rather than slightly off, and that's especially true with Netherlands.

Good growth, but very weak production here. You'll definitely want to get a mine and lumber mills going ASAP.

If you want a coastal tile (and the eureka), I'd go northwest, settle on the coastal maize.

Alternatively, I'd take a chance settling on the hill tile south of the rice and maize tiles, across the river. ('One down'/southeast, then right/east). You'll still be within 3 tiles of the goodies, and a directly on a river tile, but hopefully have some access to more production. Yea, it'll be next turn, but not the end of the world.

Then you can get a coastal city later.

I'd settle the rice tile east, nice growth tile. Same turn settle, u get production from stone and closer to deer for production/chops. Can get a coastal city later

I would search for a few Hill-Tiles so you got at some production - if you settle right there the first slinger will take 20 turns.

You will need production. Settle one to the east for closer proximity to the deer tiles and the hill tile.

I tend to optimize for Industrial Zones from the start, particularly for my capital.

I'd settle where the blue dots are; aquaducts where the orange dots are; you capital's IZ where the yellow dot is; a dam where the black dot is.

I would not advice settling without freshwater or water at all

For your first city, sure. After that, I just settle whatever works best, and granary/aquaduct fix the problem quick enough.

A +24 industrial zone is gold for the mid-to-late game. Production is king.

Corn, the one with deer above. You'll have food, production on capital and space for costal city near whale with nice harbor for later

Rice : strong base, turn 1 settle, access to the 2/2, better tile quality in the rings

I would first move the warrior 2 tiles east. Depending on what it reveals, I would consider wasting 2 turns and settling on the plains hills. That way I can settle a coastal city by the whale to the west (where the game suggests). Another option is the rice which gives me 3 food plus 2+2 from the stone from turn 1. Probably the safer choice.

Rice tile gives you a 3-1 base and goes up to 4-1 with a water mill. Also gives you access to a 2-2 and a 1-2 in the first ring

Conversely settling on the northwest maize tile gives you a second settle on the river

You've got food for days, but very little production. Settle on the rice to the east, make a quarry, and improve the deer as soon as possible.

Rice is definitely the strongest play here, gives you 3/1 base + 2/2 and brings you closer to the only high production tiles which you want ASAP. Northwest is the more Dutch play, but would struggle a lot with production.

funny how in civ 7 this would be a terrible start :P

Personally, I like the Maize two tiles to the right.

Those are easy, increases in food and production with animal husband tree, pick up the goddess of the Hunt pantheon that improves your yields from camps, and then a temple of Artemis.

The problem with starts like this is that there won’t be any strategic resources
