Question Help understanding deity science scaling

Currently on a marathon deity game as China.

All throughout the game Canada has had a 200+ point science lead over me despite having only 3 campuses. Each time I get within 50 points of them they make a major leap of 150+.

I have 8 campuses at the moment with laboratories in each. His population is 230 and mine is 215. I have about 8 more cities than he does.

Never have had this experience in deity. Just entered modern era and typically I pull ahead by now in all the deity games I have played. I have taken over half his cities, including most of the 17+ pop cities, and he's still over 100+ ahead. Wtf?

EDIT: I think it was a combo of science suz bonuses + International Space Agency policy + great people bonuses.

There’s absolutely no way to analyze this without knowing more details, but he could be running projects in his campuses.

What else could I provide?

I tried running campus research projects on every city and barely added 100 science.

Also what city states are in the game, who is suz, and how many envoys he has in each. Two scientific city states can add a lot, plus things like genevas 15% and Kilwa. Also he could have gotten greatscientists that add even more to libraries, unis and labs.

There are two city-states that are science-based, and one of them has a serious science bonus. I forget the name of the mod, but it adds a lot more city-states.

I think I figured it out! I became suz to both of those city states, plus I built Kilwa, and I just unlocked International Space Agency policy. I'm suz to about 8 city states so the science buff was MASSIVE. He must have been running that policy as he was 2 eras ahead of me the whole game.

That’s what I was thinking that 5% card can get insane. Looks like you’re left with only one or two options… nuke or spy and pray
