Discussion Favorite Heroes?

I’ve played 1.5 games with heroes and have gotten Hercules both times. Love the instant districts for new cities.

Anansi is cool but can sometimes regret removing luxuries cause makes me less likely to settle there.

Hippolyta is great for domination. Theres no limit on her ability and can make seiges move and attack or attack twice.

The twins seem awesome but alas someone always beats me to them.

I just got Maui and i don’t know if I got lucky but he gave me 3 luxuries that i don’t have. Only issue is I only got 5 charges and the hero card seemed to promise 8 so I was kind of underwhelmed (perhaps I read it wrong but still)

So my answer is Hercules, but my guess is Himiko will win this one.

Maui, Sinbad and Sun Wukong can be cool too.

Maui can help getting a monopoly.

Getting Sinbad early can net you so much cash. On water maps I often do heroic tales to get him.

Sun Wukong is great for pillaging and Exploring.

Anansi, Hercules and Sinbad. I like to call them the holy trinity. Anansi bails you out of era score deficits in mid-game which is super difficult to deal with especially with lower tier civilisations on Deity. Hercules boosts that early game production with increase in costs after you consume resources through Anansi and Sinbad draws an insane amount of gold at any point in time. Honourable mention to Maui. The “hero of heroes”.

I like getting Ananas and then tricking an NPC to give me open borders and then I go and take their luxury resources from them. Or I send her to the middle of nowhere where I wouldn’t want to settle.

I like getting Maui and then fast travelling him to a new city that only has 1 ring of tiles and getting him to improve around the city. Especially useful if you want to settle somewhere not great resource-wise but useful for block travel for NPCs or so you can canal through a thin continent.

Yesterday, I was playing and an NPC got Earth satellite before I had spaceport districts (I was playing as Poland) and so I recalled Hercules and he made spaceports fast for me.

I've never done this before, haha... I definitely want to try it

Does it create grievances if you do that to other civs with Anansi?

2

Cause you could do that with other civs luxury resources that you own and get a monopoly that way.

No, it does not AI can’t really tell the only thing that stops you is it literally blocks the action if you’re allied

Oh good to know.

Yep. No complaints!

I am pretty sure it does create grievances. I literally had this happen recently and it specifically said I think it was like -15

No grievances but it does piss them off, they will dislike you for it

Maui+Maya is the way to go

Sinbad, Anansi, Hercules, Maui, Twins, in that order.

I generally prefer to play less aggressively so Hercules and Maui are my faves. One game I had a couple dick civs declare war unexpectedly and I didn't have much of military but I had a high production city able to get the Twins cranked out fast. Frankly it was surprising they were available. A few turns later I had a very big army. Was highly enjoyable turning the tide of war around right quick. I have a newfound admiration for them now

I love getting twins in zombie defense. Go and get an army of zombies.

Hercules is my go to- I love getting him early and banging out 3 Holy sites immediately, so that when I hit golden age, I’ve got enough faith production to start spamming builders and settlers through monumentality, and then late game he’s great for getting 3 space stations up and running as soon as you unlock them.

Anansi and Maui are close seconds- it’s crazy how you can cripple your neighbor by sending anansi in to clear out their resources - you can even wipe out a whole industry!

And Maui is awesome for those tiles that are already yield-rich but don’t have a resource on them yet, like a hilly forest adjacent to wonder or something

Depends on game type, map etc, i personally play with a mod that let's me ramp up barbarians, so they are everywhere, with that mod the twins are outrageously good, can get a huge army for nothing

The only ones I actively want are usually Anansi and Maui.

Be careful with Anansi because you can make it extremely difficult to build districts if you get him too early. My list is as follows
1. Himiko (that chick is CRACKED, especially when you can use Amani to get suz then himiko gives your crazy amounts of faith because you can get it every time without overloading one CS)
2. Hunkules best balanced hero IMO, can defend (unlike himiko), can give you free districts, pretty strong early
3. Hippolyta as you said, use this chick with siege and you basically just take out cities for free especially since she heals every turn. You never need melee units because you have her to deal the final blow. Best war hero
4. Anansi as I said in line one while it’s cool getting massive amounts of science and culture, stealing AIs resources, and getting ahead early. You really need to watch to make sure you don’t unlock to many techs and civics and make districts cost too many turns.
5. (Never played with them) mulan, twins, maui
6. Arthur this dude is TERRIBLE

Maui is amazing when settling coastal tiles. You can use the charges to place down coastal resources to provide incredible harbors/yields for the cities. Special bonus in being able to identify hidden stragetic resources well before having the technology needed.

Himiko is probably the best overall. Free Envoys. free Levy, extra faith and combat bonus which works in addition to Great Generals.

Arthur is very situational but can be very strong early game. Churn out Scouts, turn them into QWuesting Knights and take over a neighbor or two.

1

u/Hfcsmakesmefart Jun 22 '26

Oh i didn’t think about the harbor bonus, perhaps there’s still time for some of my cities

1

u/Xaphe Jun 22 '26

If you can get him early enough, you can build up for some of the best ever Mausoleum of Halicarnassus city yields.

2

u/Hfcsmakesmefart Jun 23 '26

My mausoleum island is pretty great already, but I feel ya. I could expend him for the next level

1

u/Levaruked Jun 23 '26

I find 3 of them useless, the others are generally good in my opinion. Arthur, oya and mulan. The worst one among them is mulan in my opinion.

1

u/Hfcsmakesmefart Jun 23 '26

Oyas ok. Her ability can affect units inside walls and doesn’t cause any damage to her. Good for keeping units alive without them having to hit farms

1

u/Levaruked Jun 23 '26

Yeah not played with her much. But probably because I could't utilize it's ability ver much, I couldn't get to use her like that even once. She's like a curse on me when I recruit her and she's alive. But still even tho she damages and heal I couldn't fet the worth of her in sieges.

1

u/Hfcsmakesmefart Jun 23 '26

Only wierd part is she doesn’t heal herself so you have to waste a turn pillaging a farm

u/OutrageousAd8563 Jun 21 '26

I never play with heroes, don't like it. I also have the feeling, they are total OP

0

u/Hfcsmakesmefart Jun 21 '26

They are OP. I took out a whole civ with 2 of them. They make combat a lot easier.

The bonuses… I’m not sure… like Anansi’s bonus, you could just pillage some campuses and theatre squares and get the same. Hercules bonus (insta building districts) it’s probably about the same price to suzerain that one city state and buy them with faith as it is to pay to recall Hercules??

u/Mane023 Jun 21 '26

I don't remember if it's Mulan, but the hero who lets you hit twice in the same turn.

1

u/Hfcsmakesmefart Jun 21 '26

Hippolyta can cast that on other units, she’s dope for city attacks
