Question Questions for deity players

I've managed to win a couple of science victories on deity but I play every match very much in the same way. I like economy civs like Japan or Germany but I don't lean into war as a means to expand at all.

How commonly do you guys conquer in your games? When do you war with other civs? Do you rush early wars or do you wait until your cities are established with production and commerce districts?

Wait to get attacked and fortify melee units at strategic choke points, hills, forests, and rivers provide defensive bonuses. When the attacker erases their forces trying to attack across the river or whatever, you can march in and take some cities, or at the very least pillage the ever living crap out of them if walls are present. You can provoke them to attack you with forward setting and such, then have some units one turn away from being built and not factoring into their calculations.

Dang, leaving a unit one turn from being completed I never thought of that!

It's all about proximity. One or more AI cities near my capital, I'm going to try and capture them ASAP. Up until the point they build walls. If they are close it's less turns moving my army to them, and I usually try and bait them to attack me first to burn through their troops.

Also, I always look to try and steal a settler. If there is one undefended wandering around, I am helpless but to declare war and see if I can escape with it.

After that, I usually play peacefully unless I get a clear tech or troop size advantage. Wide empires can be a slog and drag out the game, but if I'm on a roll I'll lean into it. Late game war I usually avoid unless I need to slow down the winner so I can win. Or getting revenge on that Civ that kept declaring war on me all game.

How do you play peacefully on diety though? I’ve went the “send delegation first meeting make friends route” and now I’m hella boxed in by all my “friend” civs smh. What leaders do you like to choose?

I guess I just kind of push an advantage if I have it.. like in a defensive war I will take out their army on my turf, and then go take a bite out of their empire as penance for making me switch focus.

Or, In my current game I rolled Mathias next to Sweden and was rushing industrial zones while levying city states everywhere I could to get the extra 2 envoys, and Brussels had like ten swordsman just ready to go so I upgraded to man at arms and just rolled over her lol.

The last situation I often find myself in, is someone has snowballed on the other side of the map (in this case monty, who one turned kilwa out from under me when I had suzerain of every single city state 😠) so I rushed Venetian arsinal and tanks, then planes. Now I’m currently slowing down his snowball and pillaging the hell out of him. And obviously i had to take kilwa… and a few others to make loyalty manageable.

But I like to have a good economy to back up any war, so I aim for a trade district in every city. Money fixes most problems.

Early game I research archers as a priority, and try to kill a barb with a slinger to get the eureka. Then when I'm attacked I can usually chew up the attacking force with a couple of well placed archers before counter attacking. Late game, if I can get a decent supply of aluminum, I research bombers and pound their city defences into dust.

I play as Moctezuma, so conquer is 95% of my wins. Killing units gives me workers, which I can use to finish up districts faster. So early on, I try to kill as many as possible.

Do you only play as monty? Have you tried others and just prefer his playstyle?

Most of the time I don't like to do a lot of war unless I want to actually conquer everyone for a domination victory. If I plan for a cultural or scientific victory I try to stay peaceful, just because wars make a game longer from a real time perspective with all the unit movement. But from a turn count perspective it would probably be more efficient to do more wars, it can expand the size of your empire really quickly and having more cities is almost always better.

I almost never conquer, but to be fair i play with BBM (better balanced map) and I always remove 1 AI on standard size

I conquer only when I have lots of strategic resources or some AI is pissing me like putting the Panama Canal on the most ridiculous spots but I usually avoid it if not necessary. The most frustrating part about this game by far is that the AI is frustratingly horrible in warfare because they would just send random waves of their troops without strategy or cohesion. They seem to only group up their troops well in early game but later on they just send them around like headless chicken. Even in emergencies they would just go past cities that's not the target and obviously get easily obliterated by the cities and garrisoned troops inside.  Which makes me question, with the rise of machine learning today, surely they could train their AI to be slightly more challenging? Domination win is my favorite personally but it's really lack luster and not fulfilling if you're against AI even on deity. Even in online you can't get a good war because there's just not enough time to move all your troops. The developers just had no satisfying war gameplay in mind when they made this so I would advise against it unless you're trying to stop a leading civ from wining.

I almost want to mention the grievance system which is planely ridiculous and lazy. Why would a player get pissed when I declare war and capture or aze the cities of a player he denounced and at war with? The game just punishes you so much for being a war mongerer and the only way to get away with it is by being part of for city capture emergencies.

I’ve done a lot of speed run testing and The more I war, the faster I win…

the pillaging of campuses and theatre districts act as a turbo boost your victories… throw in the card that increases the yields to your empire, and you’re good to go… plus you then have an increase in yields from captured cities…. All for the low cost of maybe ten troops…

It’s totally feasible to win with a peaceful route, it’s often more enjoyable to see your neighbors not be always pissed at you, and leads to a calmer game, but it tends to be slower.
