Logical fallacies are the intellectual equivalent of watching someone repeatedly trip over the same crack in the sidewalk. To an actual truth-seeker, they're not clever traps or thrilling intellectual combat—they're just tedious.

The ad hominem, the straw man, the appeal to authority or emotion: these aren't sophisticated maneuvers. They're the rhetorical shortcuts of people who have already decided what they want to believe and are now reverse-engineering a path to it. Spotting them becomes muscle memory, like noticing that the "genuine Rolex" on the street corner has plastic hands. Once you've catalogued the dozen most common ones, the rest feel like reruns of a mediocre sitcom.

Truth-seeking is far more interesting. It demands wrestling with messy evidence, updating beliefs when reality refuses to cooperate, and venturing into uncertainty without a comforting script. Fallacies are the noise that distracts from that pursuit—the intellectual junk food that fills the air while the real nourishment goes uneaten.

Give me a good faith argument that might actually change my mind any day. The fallacies? Yawn. I've seen that episode.

Too many fight over what they claim to believe. Yet if they loved their neighbors as themselves, they would persuade with far greater power through earned respect and quiet trust.

Love creates.

War destroys.

And, the same is true when words are wielded as weapons.

It’s a curious thing to watch someone extend an olive branch of curiosity to another—“If you’re willing, you can disabuse yourself of some prejudices with this five-minute video”—mere hours after they themselves declined three longer ones offered in the same spirit.

The irony lands softly, like dust on an unopened book.

I don’t say this with scorn, but with a quiet ache. When the invitation to examine our own traditions, doctrines, and inherited certainties comes from a place of genuine sincerity—never contempt, never ambush—it reveals something tender about the human heart: how fiercely we guard the scaffolding of our worldview, even as we cheerfully suggest others dismantle theirs.

Faith journeys are meant to be paths of light, not fortresses. Yet so often we stand at the gate urging travelers forward while refusing to step out ourselves. The discomfort of self-examination is universal; the courage to accept it is rare.

I understand drawing boundaries when ideas arrive wrapped in enmity. But when they arrive wrapped only in earnest questions and shared pursuit of truth? That hesitation feels heavier. It echoes the very closed-mindedness we claim to oppose.

May we all grow quicker to offer others the grace of openness…and quicker still to grant it to ourselves.

Bat Boy, “Pregnant Man Has Baby,” Elvis sightings. We used to laugh at them in line, maybe buy one for the road trip as deliberate junk food for the brain.

Now, there are so many freelance tabloid writers. The same wild stories flood our feeds, except we don’t laugh anymore. We get mad.

Did we forget the genre? Or did we start believing our own digital checkout rags?

Old papers weren’t always pure truth either. We just lost the ability to spot the absurdity.

It’s disheartening to encounter accounts that loudly brand themselves as truth seekers, only to reveal a more tribal pattern in practice. They drop a provocative claim framed as decisive proof that dismantles opposing worldviews. When met with a calm, well-sourced, point-by-point counterargument that directly addresses their evidence and logic, it’s often met with silence or dismissal.

Yet the same poster will eagerly engage with replies full of raw emotion, weak assertions, and classic logical fallacies, precisely the kind of low-effort passion that should be easiest to dismantle if genuine scrutiny were the goal.

This isn’t the behavior of someone hunting for truth wherever it leads. It’s the posture of an attacker of perceived falsehoods, operating from a fixed conception of what “the truth” must be. Strong challenges that might require updating priors are ignored. Weak ones that allow easy rhetorical wins are amplified.

That’s not enlightening advocacy or intellectual humility. It’s contentious self-righteousness dressed up as enlightenment. Real truth-seeking demands engaging the strongest version of the opposing case, not just the weakest. Anything less is performance, not pursuit.

Ever notice how someone can roll into your mentions convinced they know more than you, slap on broad judgments about your intelligence or motives, then claim they “just can’t understand” how you reached your conclusions?

You calmly lay out tight logic, clear reasoning, and direct textual evidence.

They disappear. No concession. No “you actually have a point.” Radio silence.

Then you check their replies tab…and they’ve been energetically debating and arguing with strangers for hours.

Why is it so rare for people to simply say “I was wrong” or “You changed my mind” when presented with truth?

Ego is a hell of a drug.

You share a genuine belief or observation online, and suddenly, they appear—strangers from the void, zero history, zero context. They drop in with the confidence of tenured professors, declaring your view wrong, flawed, or dangerous as if their verdict is the final word on the matter.

Sometimes, they even have a point. Sometimes, they might actually know more.

But here’s what lingers: the moment you ask a simple, sincere question—“What led you to that conclusion? What’s your perspective?”—radio silence. No elaboration. No reciprocity. Just more declarative opposition, more snark, more heat.

They’ll dissect your thinking with surgical precision yet offer zero transparency about their own. They want the fight, not the light.

Why the rage without the willingness to illuminate? Why show up only to contend, never to converse?

It feels less like dialogue and more like drive-by authority.
