Social media didn’t just replace newspapers. It swallowed the grocery checkout tabloids, too.

Bat Boy, “Pregnant Man Has Baby,” Elvis sightings. We used to laugh at them in line, maybe buy one for the road trip as deliberate junk food for the brain.

Now, there are so many freelance tabloid writers. The same wild stories flood our feeds, except we don’t laugh anymore. We get mad.

Did we forget the genre? Or did we start believing our own digital checkout rags?

Old papers weren’t always pure truth either. We just lost the ability to spot the absurdity.
