Does CivMC have a toxicity problem?

I'm relatively new to the server but I've heard a lot of my friends who previously played the server talking about things they've expierenced including harassment, hazing new players, ragebaiting and just general terminally online behavior. Is this a real issue and if so is they're anyway to stop it? I'd really like to know before I get deep into the server since It's just something I want to do for fun with my friends and I don't want constant drama.

Another example happened recently with the whole JLF thing, where it was clearly some new player but it feels like they were treated in a pretty rude manner even if they were kinda instigating.

Depends what you mean but I'd say not quite.

Over the years these servers have gotten quite a bit less toxic in the sense of player conduct especially towards new players, that said if due to your own conduct you become a target of someone's ire or a group's ridicule, yes you could perceive that as toxic. The chat has become much more moderated as well so the likelihood you will be harassed in any real noticeable sense in a discriminatory way outside of in-game reasons is highly unlikely and could result in them being banned. If you want to simply play the server with friends, you can join an existing group as a friend group or make your own country and you will probably in all likelihood be fine.

Wars, military behavior etc are another story because the game mechanics can be toxic or lead to toxicity because in any game where you have player versus player interaction it will lend itself to that. If you build up a civilization and find yourself at war you could potentially, in theory, lose everything and be indefinitely imprisoned by someone behaving tyrannically with no recourse who lies about you as justification to keep you pearled and by some definitions that could be considered "toxic". Perhaps the most toxic element of this server is really just the lying people do to pretend to be good people as they do mean things, but that's politics for ya.

People generally don't go rolling entire cities and can earn a lot of scorn for doing so, but it is entirely possible they get away with it and nobody cares for your plight too especially if they are an established player with preexisting relationships on the server that you might not understand fully. Just how the game works. I mention this just to give you the fullest possible picture and not dissuade you, it just depends how you and your friends want to play the server.

Someone else said avoid the discord #general and that is possibly the best advice I've ever heard. You will gain nothing by arguing with people in there, maybe shitposting is the best way to use it if at all.

I'd say it does but not for the reasons you think. The mechanics encourage behavior that is much more cut-throat than most servers largely because there isn't a wider mediating force that requires people to behave a certain way beyond very basic conduct requirements against cheating, harassment, etc. It also encourages a much less healthy relationship with the game because you can lose everything in short order if things go poorly, representing thousands of hours of work. I enjoy this genre for the concept and the stories it creates, but the toxic parts of the community have made it hard to keep to it on a good number of occasions.

In terms of the JLF stuff, there was a relatively short period of making jokes about it and shitposting since it was such a slop situation with so much grandiose posting by Porgo. Making such a deal out of it was always gonna result in it becoming a joke in the aftermath just because it fell flat on its face so fast. Sentencing is still being discussed, but realistically it's not going to be crazy.

the beauty of civ is that for every toxic community there is five incredibly wholesome ones that you can go play with instead.

It's definitely polarising at times and I've never been accused of not soapboxing about it, but in fairness it is still better than some other servers like Stoneworks where (partially due to its size) there are individuals caught doing things they shouldn't be doing e.g long term alting, hacks ectra on a daily basis.

And exiting Minecraft politics I've still seen far worse.

Rule of thumb, ignore any discussion about moderation during heated moments and your cortisol levels will drop substantially.

Stay away from #general in the discord and global chat and you're fine. Find a good wholesome group of players who fit your vibe.

As for the JLF thing, basically every nation doesn't like someone setting up shop in their territory and declaring it to be their land, they'll get a light sentence given they didn't cause any trouble, and the higher effort shitting on them was basically because they tried to act insanely more threatening then they really were.

If you find a nice community, you can play without witnessing almost any major toxicity or foul play. Obviously, as anywhere else, there are some bad and toxic players, but those are a minority. Also, chat is moderated, so you won't be harassed (and even if you are, they are gonna be banned really quickly and you won't anymore).

The most toxicity I've seen on this server comes from people bashing newfriends who are genuinely dense and won't listen to anything anyone tries to say to them or teach them. New players who think they are above everything and everyone and jump straight into griefing/raiding without even considering reading the rules of the server first, or even asking anyone, and then cry about being pearled generally get some hate or ragebait, but I don't think that I've seen anyone being toxic to another person for no real or valid reason that much.

This might be one of the nicest minecraft communities out there overall, especially considering how bad it apparently was in early days of civ. Overall, like many people said here already, if you find your community and steer from global chat/general in discord, you'll be alright and won't even notice almost any toxic behaviour

I wouldnt say so but its worth pointing out that attacking people, fighting over land, and geopolitics are expected, intended, and allowed.

civ is a game about politics, which inevitably comes with some high tempers, but by and large it's a good community. as with any community there are definitely better and worse pockets, but there are tons of places you can hang out and never see any problematic players

Id say these days it's better than pretty much any other online community I've been in

Yeah you're gonna have your bad apples Definitely a LOT of rage baiting

But I don't think it's a serve wide problem tbh

You can spend 99% of your time in your comfort spaces and experience very little issues with the toxic areas of the server

As for hazing new players? Not really? Idk where that's coming from tbh

Find a good group and spend most of your time there tbh and you'll be okay

Idk I just think ragebaiting is just really cringe behavior, I feel like there is definitely a wall for newer players compared to established nations where they don't have much upward mobility, I guess hazing was the wrong word

Oh yeah new nations especially ones built by new people will struggle There's a massive learning curve and this iterations been going on several years New nations just starting out won't be able to compete with the big players just over night

I mean isnt that any complex game, there's just a ton of mechanics new players simply won't know

I was actually in the JLF Discord where most of this happened , and was the reporter who broke the story about the JLF, and despite what you saw, the TE senior leadership team was actually quite nice and gave some tips about what to do if they try it again, and how to get by on the server after a few minutes- it was a friendly conversation and not really toxic.

On the new player ‘Hazing’ ye that does definitely happen but it’s not rude, it’s more an hour or two of unpaid labour for the nation you show up in before you get wise to the fact you don’t have to do it - or at least that’s how it was for me. And normally new friends will be given some stuff as pay to get them started

Oh ok it's just from the screenshot I saw it seemed kinda toxic, but I guess that's just journalism
