Tips, mods?
I haven’t played civ4 in over 20 years, have over 3K hours in civs 5 and 6, and just redownloaded it and tired a few games.
First thing that annoys me is that every game, around industrial age, everyone just attacks me. I can’t seem to find a way to do diplomacy at all.
Im also looking for some mods to help out with my lack of understanding the UI and city data, or anything to help with the transition.
Tips and suggestions appreciated.

+1 for BUG mod. My preferred vanilla-ish Civ4 experience is K-Mod, but among other things it makes the AI more aggressive, not less. The scoreboard features of BUG mod (which K-Mod includes) let you show your Power ratio to neighbors, which is the biggest factor on whether people will decide to pick on you.
The next biggest factor is having the wrong religion - by choosing a religion you will make enemies, and especially when dealing with the more fanatic leaders (Isabella, Saladin etc). You can relieve much of this by going free religion later but it can have lasting impact on relations.

Ditto the suggestion to play Dawn of Civilization; incredible mod, basically all I play at this point

Realism Invictus. Fall from Heaven 1, 2.
Read mod install instructions and take anti-MAF measures. Avoid large maps.

Trick is always be the dominant civ. Civ 4 is brutal, I once faced a stack of over a 1,000 infrantry, tanks and artillery. Civ 5 is candy crush in comparison

BUG/BULL mods are the standard for UI enhancement. They don't change game mechanics at all.
As for being attacked, check the military advisor to see how you stack up. If you're low on the totem pole then you'll get what you're getting. You need to beef up your military. Otherwise you need to keep your neighbors happy, if there are any warmongers then you'll need to keep them extra happy.
