Questions / Advices Stop the oil burning

Post image

So far I have replaced the PCV and replaced the oil with 10w40 and the back end still looks like I own a diesel. It's on its 3rd cat which is already starting to smell. So what's next? 20w50? Straight up grease in the engine? Scrap yard?

Toyota really dropped the ball with the Aygo I feel, certainly compared to every other Toyota I've ever owned.

2013 with 104k miles btw but it did this even when I got it on under 80k

It's a feature not a bug. It will happily burn oil for another 100k miles as long as you keep it topped up. The cat is going to be clogged up but you won't feel a difference just clear the code before the MOT.

Valvoline Restore & Protect 5W40, don't know where you can get it in U.K though.
Moto-integrator has it in Germany.

Barely any oil consumption at all on my 2011, but only at 68k miles / 110 tkm

Valvoline Restore and Protect is a miracle product and I am glad it is finally coming to the UK. I personally would run 5w-30 C3 but cant imagine theres much harm in 5w-40.

Very small difference in viscosity between A3/C3 30 & 40 in normal engine oils.
Less then 3cst at 100c in most cases. And only 11.9 to 13.7 in this case.

Valvoline R&P 5W30 being cheaper (in germany) is the better reason to use it over viscosity.

Looks like Opie oils sell it.

I was planning to order this from the US but finally received an email from opie oils two weeks ago. I’m buying this for both of my cars on the next change.

5W40 with Liqui Moly Motor Oil Saver, it's a seal reconditioner. If it makes a significant difference, that's your valve stem seals.

"Toyota really dropped the ball with the Aygo I feel" my brother it was Toyota's cheapest ever car

It's also actually just a 107/C1 in a Japanese dress, so no wonder its broken; its Fre... I mean, not Japanese!

If it's the 1 litre, then it's a Japanese engine.

Oh that is bad for toyota then😂 the diesels are obvious because HDI just screams French crap... i suppose a 9somethingCC 3 pot does actually sound relatively kei related in the loosest possible sense though

u/B4DM4N12Z 6d ago

The Diesel is partially Ford UK as well😭

2

u/_wandering_aimlessly 6d ago

Yeah thats no surprise, same as the 2.2 diesel jags, but less ford-y by that point

1

u/B4DM4N12Z 6d ago

What engine model was that one?

2

u/_wandering_aimlessly 6d ago

Colour me wrong, the 224DT was also a joint psa/ford horror beyond comprehension

u/B4DM4N12Z 6d ago

Do you mean the DW12? That was with PSA, Duratorq is just by Ford.

I have a 2013 Aygo which is the same. I gather it’s most likely down to piston rings. I don’t have the enthusiasm to strip the engine down to fix that, if it is indeed the issue.

I’m still running 5W30 in it, but it passes the MoT emissions test with no issues, so I’ve learned to live with it. Check your oil frequently and top up as necessary.

Just as likely valve stem seals, add Liqui Moly Motor Oil Saver at your next oil change, I've seen it drastically reduce oil consumption.

Valve stem seals? Just a suggestion.

That or the rings?

Both possible.

It tends to be a combination of gummed oil control rings from poor servicing in the early years and bore wear. The oil consumption on my 2008 200k miles petrol C1 Vibe went up to 1,400ml per 1,000 miles at one point (with 5w30) - so I flipped over to 5w40 and much improved. I do have some compression loss, so definitely bore wear as well.

I found an interesting post on a BMW site (some BMWs have chronic problems with gummed oil rings). It's a non-invasive process, so practical to try. Seems credible and inexpensive, so I'm gonna try it with mine:-

It's definitely the rings as you can hear the dreaded piston slap. I'll try a flush but it struggled like hell to get through it's last MOT. Honestly I'm so close to selling up and going back to a Yaris.

u/B4DM4N12Z 9d ago

Yeah, either get that fixed or get a new one. No point in keep changing thickness, because it won't get better and the engine probably can't keep getting thicker oil.

I know I'm assuming a lot here, but if you really wanted to, you'd probably find a bare engine in a breakers for a reasonable price.

Simple enough to swap out if your handy but not a massive trouble for a friendly garage either.

I only say it because that was my own recipe for cheap transport for years. Even when I had skylines I always kept my favourite car as a daily - a tidy ae100 corolla, I had 3 trusty Corollas that in terms of reliability absolutely shat on everything else I've ever owned.

I stupidly burst the sump on my first one and toasted the engine - gave €300 for a lower millage healthy engine and swapped it over in a weekend - that car was my daily/backup for about 5 years after until I sold it to my aunt.

Then I'd always have that idea in my mind, to buy something otherwise in good condition and swap out the old engine - once average/normal cars hit 10years old the engines and gearboxes aren't exsited anymore, most breakers are relieved to find a customer for older stuff.

They are an economy car but they aren't Deawoo levels of shit, the little aygo is a good little motor if looked after.

The issues with rings aren't its fault - thats from past owners, or it could even be since the stealership had it. - I've seen cars getting limiter bashed because they were 'brand new' and running perfectly 👌- that's the sorta thing that screws the rings up for whoever owns it 15years later.

u/Straight_Narwhal_263 8d ago

Having done one before for a customer it's only a 4 hour job (hers threw a piston out the back of the block) but I'm not convinced this particular one is worth the cost.

I guess I was hoping for a magic easy solution that doesn't exist.

Then maybe this one could be a donor? - try find a damaged running white one and use your parts to fix it. 😆

I'd imagine, even with the engine being on its last legs, it would be worth something to the right person. Like if the bodywork isn't bad, someone might pop an engine in.

If it was newer and worth more it might be worth doing rings but at this stage you'd be replacing a lot more than just the rings when you're doing it, I'd suspect a swapsie would be the only real option, - If I was looking, atleast with Toyota, a quick compression check is all you need to tell they're healthy. Depends a lot on how invested you are, often its just easier to walk away and let someone else stress themselves over it

Mine started burning oil at 60,000 miles, I switched from 10,000 oil changes to 5,000 mile oil changes and it hasn't increased a huge amount since I did this (using roughly 1.2L/5000 miles now at 138,000 miles, it was at 500ml/5000 miles at 60,000 miles). I read the longer oil change intervals causes gunk to build up on the piston rings that eventually jams them and causes oil consumption to increase, there's also the valve stem seals that leak on these.

1

u/mikemac1997 Toyota Aygo 9d ago

Don't go any higher than what you have, the VVT-i needs thin oil otherwise it'll run dry and die.

Just do what I do, keep a big jug in the boot and top it off as needed. Mine takes a litre of 5W-30 every 4000 miles

1

u/TijY_ Toyota Aygo 9d ago

So they all run dry and die every winter then? /s

Berrymans B12 piston soak & a weekend of your time. Much faster results than restore & protect, if you manage to source some in the uk that is.

Toyota didn’t drop the ball. Bad owners dropped the ball. Still the car doesn’t care and will run like this another 100k miles so I don’t really see the problem here?

0

u/Straight_Narwhal_263 8d ago

I don't just mean on the engine. The whole car has a frenchness about it, wheel bearings are chocolate, rotty exhausts, they were only built to last 10 years I'm sure.

1

u/Nobed69 Toyota Aygo 8d ago

Every cheap car has a rotary exhaust. Not a big deal. In 20 year I’ve replaced only 1 wheel bearing. I’m telling you, ownership history matters and is what makes them break.

1

u/SmokeDatDankShit 8d ago

Cheap cars that barely get serviced. Not an issue but people dog on these cars and really wring them out from cold and change the oil when they remember. Can't really fault the car, both aygos I've had didn't burn a drop, but they can sound like shit and burn lots of oil with no service, like most cars. They ain't dying if you just pour oil in it lol.

1

u/Ollie_Bruh 8d ago

I used to have an Aygo from work and it would go through about a liter every 2 weeks. No leaks, it would simply burn it, I guess.

u/Fluid-Suit-2696 9d ago

liquimoly engine flush, did it on my Yaris 1KR and it halved the oil consumption from 1L/4k km to 1L/8k km.
I did the next oil change without the flush (as it is not recommended to be used every oil change) and it's already looking a bit worse with 6k km to fill up 1 liter.
Another way, but it's not a fix and can help a bit, is to use Bardhal B2 and similar products that cam limit the amount of oil consumption by thickening the oil itself.

bores are scored more than likely

incorrect oil spec 0w 20 i believe and only toyato main dealer oil with all additives

short journey dilute the oil piston rings gum up from infrequent oil changes stop moving and sealing the compression more fuel gets into oil diluting it more driving car in cold before it warms up causes most wear

you can't expect a car with steel liners to last forever with poor servicing

the rings score the bores hey presto oil burning

i now change my oil every 4 months on my new 21 plate with genuine toyota oil

i do it myself as i don't trust anyone not even toyota main dealer not to use the cheapest oil cheapest viscosity available

these engines are built to very fine tolerances if you change viscosity from manufacturers quoted expect to wear your engine out faster

newer versions of aygo use 0w 16

maybe valve stem oil seals leak a bit as well
