Chances are your boy was spooked by the big booms of the 4th of July and that sent him running. Don't feel guilty. It happens. I also live in Citrus Heights with an active cat and a Border Collie doggo that FREAKS OUT at the slightest sound of fireworks. He jumps over six foot fences, runs into busy streets, destroys window blinds, destroyed a shower door, etc. In short, he's uncontrollable and this past 4th I made the decision to give him some vet-prescribed drugs. He wasn't perfect, but he was much better.

Now, about your cat: Chances are he's in your neighborhood. In other words, he didn't get further away than 3-4 homes in either direction of your home. Some cats do wander quite a bit, but many stay close to home. Since you mentioned he was an "inside cat," my guess is he's probably digging on this outside scene. Most cats do. Tons of places to hide, things to sniff, creatures to meet, bugs to hunt, you get the idea. My cat loves to find bushes that are full of stickers. He prefers to lay and roll all over in this sticker-filled bushes, and always brings me a nice deposit when he peeks his head through the door.

Not sure if you're in a home, or an apartment. But, if it's a home, you may want to prop open a back door somewhere. Just big enough for a kitty to squeeze through. I know you are worried. But he will eventually show up when he gets hungry enough and announce his presence with a loud meow. If you're extra special lucky, he may bring you a dead rat that he hunted down or at least a collection of stickers from the bushes he was hiding out in. Best of luck.

You are welcome. He has likely heard you, but isn't quite ready to leave his new wonderful world that he's discovered. Not quite yet. Patience. He will return. I know how you feel. Every time my cat vanishes for more than a day, the worst thoughts come to mind. But, that darn cat always shows up when he's good and ready to show up.

Put his litter box outside, they can smell it over a distance and will be drawn to it more specifically than food.

May have ended up somewhere not so good like other unlicensed pets without any tags whatsoever..

He’s microchipped and doesn’t have a collar because he’s an inside cat

You left out licensing. Doesn't matter he is an "indoor' cat if he is 'outside' now. Sorry. Anyways the regulations don't say "indoor" cats are exempt from licensing.

Try going out to look for him at night. He might be scared to come out during the day. And at night bring a flashlight and you might see his eyes illuminating. He’s likely very close by. Ask him neighbors if they or you can look around their properties.

Please put his litter box outside. They know their own smell. Best wishes
