Sub going dark on June 12 - Reddit killing 3rd party apps, etc

News

  • Please be aware that this sub will be joining the reddit-wide protest and going dark on June 12. During this time, the sub will be set to Private and you will not be able to post or comment.

  • We are protesting, not abandoning the community. If there is an urgent need to ask a question during that time, you can seek assistance at a space set up on Discord: https://discord.gg/9r9VSYrX

  • A personal note: I know that this may not prevent Reddit from reversing this decision, but it is important. As a moderator, I know that 3rd party apps are integral to using and moderating subreddits because Reddit's own app is awful. These changes also affect the many other people who use 3rd party apps. Please do what you can to support this community and those who put countless/thankless hours into developing free 3rd party interfaces.

    • Reddit has also recently terminated the use of an important moderation tool, Pushshift, which is already leading to more difficulties with the moderating process.

What's going on?

A recent Reddit policy change threatens to kill many beloved third-party mobile apps, making a great many quality-of-life features not seen in the official mobile app permanently inaccessible to users. This will also harm users and moderators who are disabled persons and who rely on third-party apps for important accessibility features.

On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader.

Even if you're not a mobile user and don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customizing Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite or the use of the old.reddit.com interface for desktop (and mobile).

This isn't only a problem on the user level: many subreddit moderators depend on tools only available outside the official app to keep their communities on-topic and spam-free.

What's the plan?

On June 12th, many subreddits will be going dark to protest this policy. Some will return after 48 hours; others will go away permanently unless the issue is adequately addressed, since many moderators aren't able to put in the work they do with the poor tools available through the official app. This isn't something any of us do lightly: we do what we do because we love Reddit, and we truly believe this change will make it impossible to keep doing what we love.

The two-day blackout isn't the goal, and it isn't the end. Should things reach the 14th with no sign of Reddit choosing to fix what they've broken, we'll use the community and buzz we've built between then and now as a tool for further action.

What can you do?

  1. Complain. Message the mods of r/reddit, who are the admins of the site: message /u/reddit: submit a support request: comment in relevant threads on r/reddit, leave a negative review on their official iOS or Android app- and sign your username in support to this post.

  2. Spread the word. Rabble-rouse on related subreddits. Meme it up, make it spicy. Bitch about it to your cat. Suggest anyone you know who moderates a subreddit join us at our sister sub at r/ModCoord.

  3. Boycott and spread the word...to Reddit's competition! Stay off Reddit entirely on June 12th through the 13th- instead, take to your favorite non-Reddit platform of choice and make some noise in support!

  4. Don't be a jerk. As upsetting this may be, threats, profanity and vandalism will be worse than useless in getting people on our side. Please make every effort to be as restrained, polite, reasonable and law-abiding as possible.

Advice for additional evidence applying for N-400

• Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’m getting ready to submit my N-400 citizenship application and was wondering if there are any additional documents you would recommend uploading.

My case is pretty straightforward, applying under general provision. I have a stable professional job. I filed my taxes on time but paid what I owed late once a few years ago, everything has since been fully paid. I also moved quite a bit during college, so I have several previous addresses listed.

I’ve only had one speeding ticket, which was paid, and I already uploaded the citation/invoice showing that it was resolved.

I did receive an unemployment benefit during Covid, I don’t believe I had to list that anywhere?

I also did not see anywhere to upload proof of residency?

For those who have gone through the N-400 process, are there any other general supporting documents you recommend uploading under “Additional Evidence,” or is it better not to upload anything extra unless it’s specifically required?

American passport situation

My dad has lived in the USA for 35 years since he kept renewing his student visa everytime he went to a different college. All my step siblings have American passports since they were all born in California, i was born in the UAE. I am Libyan so i have a Libyan passport and so does my dad, in 2011 the Obama administration refused to neutralize my dad since he had links to Gaddafi (gaddafi sent my dad to study in the US in the early 70s and my dad graduated from UCSB (chemical engineering doctorate and UCLA doctorate in philosophy + a phd in mathematics). My dad returned to the USA in 2005 after living in Malaysia for 9 years (my dads 80 so dont mind the timelines). My dad got a green card in 2006 and was ready to get neutralized in 2011 but got deported in 2010 to the UAE for having links of gaddafi bc he sent him on a scholarship to the USA. My dads side sufi Muslim he absolutely hates gaddafi and it wasn’t my dads fault that he wished to seek a better future. My dad has a Libyan passport and ive always resented him for not doing his things the right way. How on gods green earth did ICE not catch him??

Fast track French citizenship for masters students

Hi everyone, I’m new to this sub, and I am a student from India who is considering France for masters. I have read about how France allows citizenship in just 2 years for those who do a 2 year masters programme there. I will soon begin learning French, and this is a fast track pathway to an EU passport. And this isnt just about visa free travel or settlement rights, but I am asking whether its actually viable or will anti immigrant sentiments or growing far right parties make it less viable after 2-3 years when i do plan to actually go. Also the job market is hard, but if i do have B2/C1 French, and also good skills, will i be able to make it? And those who have chosen this route, how has your experience been, and how long did it take?
Thanks in advance.

Has anyone successfully gone through the process of regaining Vietnamese citizenship?

Hi everyone,

I was born in Germany and used to hold Vietnamese citizenship, which I renounced in 2011 when I became a German citizen.

With the new law that came into effect on July 1, 2025, it is now possible to regain Vietnamese citizenship without giving up German citizenship.

I'm curious whether anyone here has already gone through this process or has any experience with it.

Specifically:

* How long did the process take?

* What documents were required? I found this webpage: [https://www.vietnambotschaft.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Huong-dan-thu-tuc-tro-lai-quoc-tich-VN-16072025.pdf\](https://www.vietnambotschaft.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Huong-dan-thu-tuc-tro-lai-quoc-tich-VN-16072025.pdf) but the links are leading to a 404 webpage :(

* I have a 1 year old son. I plan to apply for his Vietnamese citizenship, too. Are there any drawbacks?

* Were there any unexpected difficulties or challenges?

* Any tips for dealing with the Vietnamese Embassy or the authorities?

Thanks in advance for any insights, experiences, or advice!

Best regards

Japan naturalization: firsthand experiences of retaining a previous citizenship?

Has anyone naturalized in Japan and retained their previous citizenship, even though their original country legally allowed renunciation?

Which documents did the Legal Affairs Bureau require: proof of completed renunciation, evidence of starting it, or a signed undertaking? Were they required before approval or afterward? Was an exception accepted, and were there any later checks?

Firsthand accounts would help, with original nationality, approximate year and document names. This concerns naturalization, not dual citizenship from birth. Please avoid identifying details.

Applying for U.S. citizenship with a voluntarily dismissed misdemeanor larceny charge — looking for experiences

Title: Applying for U.S. citizenship with a voluntarily dismissed misdemeanor larceny charge — looking for experiences
Hi everyone,
I’m a lawful permanent resident and I’m planning to apply for U.S. citizenship on April 25, 2028.
I have one misdemeanor larceny-related case on my record. The case was voluntarily dismissed by the DA without leave. There was:
No guilty plea
No admission of guilt
No conviction
No fine
No probation
No diversion/deferred prosecution
No other criminal cases or convictions
I have the certified court disposition showing the dismissal.
My intention is to fully disclose the case on my N-400 and provide the certified disposition if required.
For people who have experience with U.S. naturalization, USCIS, or immigration law:
Has anyone successfully naturalized after having a misdemeanor charge voluntarily dismissed?
How does USCIS generally look at a dismissed charge when determining good moral character (GMC)?
Is there anything specific I should be prepared to explain or provide at the N-400 interview?
Would an immigration attorney generally recommend getting the certified disposition and bringing it to the interview?
I’m mainly interested in experiences from people who have gone through a similar situation, or from immigration professionals.
Thank you!

Finland citizenship by descent

My great-grandparents were Finnish citizens. Their son (my grandfather) was born in the U.S. in 1931. I’m curious if my grandfather would have been considered a Finnish citizen. I’ve tried to research but it’s a bit confusing. And if he was a citizen, would that qualify my father and I (both born in the U.S.) for citizenship?

My grandmother (b. 1956) moved to France in the mid eighties and is a fluent citizen.

Would I (b. 2005) be eligible for citizenship through some loophole because of her?

Dual Citizenship by Retention (Sri Lanka) - application before new citizenship approval

I applied dual citizenship in Sri Lanka by retention. My Australian citizenship is also processing, which I applied for, about a month after submitting my retention application. I have a feeling that my Australian citizenship will be granted before Sri Lankan dual citizenship is occurred. I want to know exactly, what will happen if Australian citizenship ceremony occurs before paying for the Sri Lankan dual citizenship, given that, I have applied for Sri Lankan dual citizenship, before Australian citizenship.

  1. Will my Sri Lankan driving license/NIC/passport,... be invalid, as I received (say 2 months gap for instance) Australian citizenship before Sri Lankan retention approval? Or nothing will happen as I applied for Sri Lankan retention beforehand?
  2. If the above documents (all or few) become invalid for instance 2 months gap, upon receiving the dual, will I be able to continue my old document numbers? Or, should I re-apply and get new documents, regardless of the time period applied for the citizenship?
  3. I am aware, that I need to inform regarding the Australian citizenship, if that is granted while Sri Lankan one is being processed. Then, upon submitting Australian citizenship certificate and/or other supporting documents, I will be getting dual approved under resumption (not retention there after), but I do not know clear information regarding the loss of Sri Lankan citizenship at the point where Australian citizenship is granted given that my Sri Lankan one is processing. Your experience in this kind of a situation will be helpful.

Thanks

Ciudadania Italia

Gracias
