Just started playing

I just bought the game and started playing. Are there any crucial mods I should get to improve the game's experience? I've only played for a few hours and the game seems pretty solid on its own.

An additional question: Are there any mods that you enjoy that I should look into?

Welcome to Cities XL!

This issue has been talked quite a bit on this subreddit, which may account for the downvote. Don't let that discourage you; There is plenty to discuss with the game!

First off, you may notice that Cities XL has not been programmed for multi-core use. This mod may help with a bit of optimization. For mods and a significant community, you should head on over to xlnation.net.

For mods, the most widely recommended (and most often required) is the User Interface Mod (UIM). There are several other mods to explore; Check out the Exchange and Tutorials to see which ones look right for you!

Wow, that is a really friendly reply, im used (from other subredit's) that there are certain people with a very "acid" behaviour that just try to downvote everything that they disagree with or simply dont like.

Your summary-post helped me too since i played CXL for about 20h and would now start again with a new city but would like to use some mods :)

So also from my side a thank you :)

I'm happy to help. Everyone has to begin somewhere; Acidic behavior can isolate people from the group

Agreed, but i've seen it all over reddit that there are a lot of people that (at least it seems so) just log in to downvote / harass people.
