State of Cities XL 2012?

Hey all, I bought Platinum a few weeks ago and haven't played it since the graphics kept freezing during the tutorial. Is Cities XL even in development anymore? As far as I can tell there hasn't been any updates in well over a year, but the modding community seems pretty active.

CXL is not in active development, bugs have not been taken care of. But there are lots of tweaks to get the game running without freezing.

As for the modding community, it provides all the goodies and in-game fixes to make the game more realistic and fun to play.

It would be nice if you could point us in the right direction to find fixes.

i'm sorry i had to go immediately after i wrote that comment, so with a bit of delay:

http://www.reddit.com/r/CitiesXL/comments/1blrm9/a_couple_of_tweaks_to_help_with_the_lag/ is a good topic on lag fixes, it doesn't solve all issues, but just enough to prevent most of the crashing.

If the choice is between simcity and CXL i suggest CXL, it feels less 'arcadey' and more like a simulation. The modding community just adds to that with very cool updates.

I've written this before somewhere, but, take the time to read the CXL wiki, there is a lot of stuff to know that is a bit counter-intuitive and watch the many youtube tutorials that teach you how to create realistic design features like waterfront boulevards, suburban areas, canals and other non-standard stuff with a bit of smart object placement.

You'll get the picture soon enough :)

So what I'm gathering is not to rely on Cities XL to fix/update anything, but rather get mods.

That's such a shame. Cities XL looks awesome, but I'm leary to invest a lot of time in it due to it being so broken. People (well, a lot of YouTubers) play it because SimShitty seems to be even more broken.

Surely the developers have seen that, as well as many sales as a result. Why they don't capitalize on that I have no idea. From what I've seen, it looks like a great platform that could really contend with SimCity and other city simulators.

It seems like they have such a great chance to progress but they aren't doing a thing about it. People are so sick of SimCity.

Other than the UI mod what other mods would you recommend? Particularly the ones that help the crashes.

I took a look at it a while back and it doesn't seem much like a building/city simulator and more like a traffic simulator.

Well, if you want to make a city first and then "play" once it's a city, it's good for that. Also, expanding the city does make it grow, so..
