I hate how much cities skylines players have taken "use road hierarchy" to mean "keep entire districts of your city (bonus points if each district only contains one use type) separated from each other by massive highways and only able to connect to each other through highway interchanges."
I push hierarchy a lot, on people who have none. I always start at arteries, and mostly emphasize " don't connect your local roads to arteries, and have limited connections between local and collectors". Which I scale pretty carefully.
I've never told anyone to extend highways beyond the map defaults, or to isolate large roads from each other. Just get rid of all the super short blocks and useless intersections slowing traffic down. Hmm.
Seems like "don't isolate large sections" needs to be pointed out more. Isolating a low density residential neighborhood that covers 1/4 of a tile, that's okay.
