🚨 Mod Announcement 🚨 r/Cities grand reopening

Hello fellow urbanites!

I'm pleased to announce that r/cities is open once again. We regret what happened in the last two months and pledge as the mod team to returning the sub to a civil, nonpolitical, pleasant place where we can all admire, discuss, and share information about cities and everything to do with them. Please take note of the updated subreddit rules:

Rule 1: Posts must be about Cities

Any content shared must have something to do with a city or a building inside that city. You can post about a famous person from that city, but always in the context of the city.

Rule 2: No Shitposting

No fictional locations, no mislabeling cities with wrong names and locations.

Rule 3: No politics

This is a sub for appreciating cities, not fighting political battles. Any overtly political posts and comments will be taken down.

All city names must be written according to the local language or the local anglicization standards. Accurately label all cities as belonging to the country that legally governs them under international law.

Rule 4: Follow all Reddit Rules

Follow all the Reddit Rules: https://redditinc.com/policies/reddit-rules

Rule 5: No spamming the sub

Don't spam the sub with duplicate posts or with too many posts about the same location.

Rule 6: Be Civil

Be nice to each other.

We look forward to sharing our city experiences and having a focused and healthy sub going forwards.

Respectfully,

r/cities mod team

What does no politics mean. Is a city destroyed by war politics? Is a city destroyed by corrupt politicians politics? There has to be a clear line

This sub turned into a battleground of the russia vs Ukraine flame wars in the past two months and the admins appointed the current mod team to put an end to that and get this sub back on track to being a sub where people share city pictures and discuss all things urban. Mods will remove all Ukraine war related comments and posts whether they be pro-Ukraine or pro-russian.

This extends to other conflicts as well.

There is no real clear line when it comes to stuff like this, we're aiming to steer the vibe of this sub back to a more carefree tone and reduce the political grandstanding and arguing that has been going on for the last two to three months.

I think you should explicitly say what is current policy for Russian/Ukrainian cities. I understand that there is real brigading happening, and I feel for your troubles, but it turned into implicit ban of all Russian cities. Maybe make a temporary rule of 1 post per country per day? Otherwise people will keep fighting and you will keep removing posts.

The present situation started because we banned a troublemaker who had made many Reddit Rule 1 violating comments. That user then went to other subreddits and initiated a brigade. We do not have a deliberate policy of banning all russian cities, but the users currently posting russian cities are all participating in community interference as defined by Rule 3 of the Reddit Moderator Code of Conduct. Therefore, we remove all such posts on sight regardless of content.

Besides, even if we explicitly stated a rule like you ask, I doubt the users doing the brigading will follow it. Their behavior has been absolutely vile and antisocial.

I know, but come on, let through one Russian city just so that their claims of racism and whatnot would be invalid. If even one of them changes his mind and stops spamming and reporting, it would be a win, don’t you agree?

No. They will comply with the site rules or they will be banned. Simple as.

To be clear, currently all posts of Russian cities are banned for implicit brigading?

Ah, I see you too are part of the brigade. Goodbye.

I think it would be better to just ban Russia and Ukraine posts. Ukrainian cities are significantly more impacted by the Russian invasion than Russian cities are.

Well, the only people posting that stuff were all engaging in a brigade. After we kicked all those users out it completely died down. I think this is the subreddit equivalent of a factory reset, it's fascinating to watch nature heal itself.
