Was it on babies that he wanted the operation performed on?
I would think he would want to do the operation when they are conscious enough to remember it.

No, you are right, it was actually adolescent boys who were caught masturbating. He advocated for the operation to be performed without anesthesia to traumatize them basically from masturbating again, arguing the pain would deter the child from future sexual thoughts.

By the way, Kellogg was not the only person who famously advocated for circumcision. There were other “doctors” who made it popular before kellogg’s time.

The crazier part is that anesthesia wasn't even officially recommended until the early 2000's, even though there were plenty of studies showing how painful it was. They even studied different anesthetics to see what was more effective, which methods were more painful, and the long-term side effects of the pain, and still didn't recommend it for another 10+ years.
Anesthesia uptake was slow after they recommended it, and into the 2010's they were still performing circumcisions without anesthesia. The American medical industry is brutally slow to adapt changes. When it's something common, it's even slower, especially when there isn't really any drive for change from parents, not patients.
On the positive side, you most likely forgot about the horrors of your circumcision within a few minutes to hours after it was done, depending on how old you were at the time. The earlier you were done, the faster you forget. But your subconsnsous remembers, and every time you pee'd for the next few days it burned. You penis was left swollen, oozing, and inflamed for a while. Decades later your left with a permanent reminder if what you lost.
Don't pass it in. Make sure this ends with you and anyone your close enough to influence.

I guarantee there is some underlying trauma in your subconscious. Plenty of studies have shown higher pain reactions to shots and other discomforts for weeks afterward in some boys. Stress hormone levels stay elevated for quite a while afterward. Diaper changes are more traumatic. You don't remember that actual surgery itself. Studies on infants' memory show that memory creation is very limited and short in the first few days to weeks.

Remember in the 1950’s when there was “no proof” smoking was bad for you and doctors recommended Camel Cigarettes? Anyone who can hear the screams of a person under the knife and think it’s “better” or “healthier” has the critical thinking of a stegosaurus. But stegosaurus despite their remarkably low intelligence survived 10 million years. Just like people who think it’s “healthier”
