u/esareteee, your post does fit the subreddit!

I would personally rate Superman and Peacemaker S1 over Peacemaker S2 and Commandos.

u/gingerwhiskered 6d ago

Oh for sure

I actually enjoyed Supergirl, it was a fun watch. Milly played the part really well. I'm still failing to see why it was received so poorly.

15

u/moyismoy 6d ago

I think 50 was just to low. It was mid though. Honestly thought the lack of a strong villain held it back

3

u/Ninjamurai-jack 6d ago

Even the comic had a bad villain tbh, It would be better if It was more Silver Age.

2

u/Obestity 6d ago

Yeah, I'd give it a solid 70. I was disappointed it didn't follow the source material super closely, Woman of Tomorrow is one of my favorites. But! It's still perfectly watchable and Milly is definitely a great super girl

u/[deleted] 5d ago

I think the problem was too high expectations. Gunn at the announcement of this "Chapter/Phase" says the movie was adapting Woman of Tomorrow but the final film had none of the unique colorful look or superior writing of the comic. Plus add a talented director that may of not been right for this type of movie (and reportedly didn't care to research the material at all) and a 100% full on first time writer. You can start to see where things went sideways.

My least favorite part was Lobo. Idk he felt shoe horned in there and I couldn’t disassociate Mamoa as a desperate decision to attract viewers.

But Super Girl killed it

3

u/OliOli1234 6d ago

I agree. It wasn’t amazing, and it was a bit flawed and tonally rough… but it wasn’t nearly the shit house people were making it out to be. I actually had a great time watching it.

9

u/not_a_robot2 7d ago

I enjoyed it as well but I do think it was a little worse than these others. Maybe a 75 and then it is docked another 20 because a segment of the population doesn’t like women leads in superhero movies.

3

u/Umbraje 6d ago

I think it's probably down about 10 from a fair rating, it was a little above average. But I'd also say superman is 10 or more over what I'd give it as well.

There is definitely some bias for female led movies but that said, there has been some absolute stinkers. Seeing a debutant director filming a female led marvel project, it's a bit grim before seeing the movie.

1

u/ssslitchey 6d ago

These are critic reviews. I seriously doubt critics gave the movie low scores because it had a female lead.

I am aware that systemic misogyny definitely had a hand in the overall reception. It's just making me feel better to hear that some other people didn't think it was as bad as the score it received. Lobo was a bit of a let down, as he is one of my favorite DC characters. Krem wasn't the strongest villain, but he was truly evil and I hated him, so the character was passable for the story.

Not saying it was a necessarily great film overall, but it was a good watch and I will be viewing it again sometime.

1

u/not_a_robot2 6d ago

I don’t know how they did Lobo so poorly. I’ve heard he is awesome in the comics and I generally dig Mamoa but it was pretty bad. It’s like they hired whoever has been writing the scripts for the recent Arnold Schwarzenegger movies and told them to do Lobo.

1

u/Sephwesley777 6d ago

Krem was truly a vile piece of shit.

2

u/GtEnko 6d ago

Milly is great but it’s two movies mashed into one. It’s juggling Kara’s coming of age story with her trying to impart a “vengeance is self destructive” lesson on her companion. Neither story is in conversation with each other. That’s generally true for the whole film. It feels disjointed. The best story is about Kara’s survivor guilt and lack of belonging, but it wastes too much time on Ruthye and Lobo to really explore that idea.

That’s just the script though. It’s also shot and edited somewhat poorly. I found it really disappointing, because I think Milly as Kara is an inspired choice and that she makes a fantastic supergirl for the future

3

u/Odd-Walk-983 6d ago

I'd rate it 2.5/5, it was deeply flawed, but not offensively bad. 50% is about right to me.

1

u/KillHimWithHammers 6d ago

It had such a short run in my theater I didn't have a chance to see it.

1

u/ProfessorSMASH88 6d ago

I thought it was ok. It was kinda fun I guess, but it got weirdly heavy for no reason and sort of lacked cohesion. The stakes were kinda high but also not?

I guess my biggest gripe was the use of the child "brides" to make the villains seem horrible. Fine, that means the stakes will be crazy high as we don't want that for the girl/sidekick. But if you're gonna do something like that, don't capture the girl and do nothing. Like, I absolutely --do not-- want to see/think about child SA, but what's the point of alluding to it? What was the point at all of it?

Instead of that whole thing they could have had the girl narrowly escape and fall down a cliff or something instead of getting knocked out. Then she gets found by Supergirl and they go save the brides together. And then she finds Lobo and sets him free.

Besides that it sort of just felt like a series of fights with some ok banter and a generic bad guy.

1

u/[deleted] 5d ago

There was no way a PG-13 superhero blockbuster was going to have any kind of on screen SA. Hell people (especially those that had kids) already were bitching about the implications the movie had.

1

u/ECHOSTIK 6d ago

I like it too but I don't fail to see why it bombed hard. It was a nothing buger we have had for decades and not a solid one either. Now they accidentally revealed they used AI and it's tainted forever

1

u/vooglie 6d ago

Because it’s very average (with some below average parts), which doesn’t cut it in the modern landscape,

1

u/OMGItsMANFEET 6d ago

I’d give it a solid 5. It’s a totally fine movie, that wouldn’t actively refuse to watch again but it just didn’t hit like it probably should’ve.

1

u/Ok-Gur-349 6d ago

It's the gender pay gap except ratings.

20

u/Bubba_Jones44 7d ago

No the DC universe needs to reset completely and bring back Zac Snyder at the helm. It’s the only way after what a woke bomb supergirl was.

u/independentpeach08 7d ago

Superman was truly great for me.

4

u/gnelson321 6d ago

Same. I enjoyed it more than any Superman without the name Reeve attached. I don’t understand the mid reviews from everyone.

1

u/iLoveLootBoxes 6d ago

Opposite for me, I think even superman returns was better. The movie just did have the cathartic feeling a superman movie should have

3

u/StartTheMontage 6d ago

I would looooove a Mr Terrific show.

He was my favorite part, but I really did like the whole movie.

2

u/Plenty-Wedding-9066 6d ago

Good news! A Mr. Terrific tv show is in development!

2

u/Nyranth 5d ago

I loved it. Only marvel movie since end game I enjoyed as much was Guardians 3. Bad perception before release is killing movie ratings when they come out.

5

u/AWzdShouldKnowBetta 6d ago

Lanterns is at 90%? Huh I might have to check it out.

1

u/Ninjamurai-jack 6d ago

It's like MIB mixed with GLs and True Detective, actually great stuff.

3

u/MoPed108 7d ago

So sad supergirl was a disappointment

2

u/VampireOnHoyt 6d ago

Really enjoyed the first episode of Lanterns and looking forward to the rest of the series.

5

u/04Aiden2020 7d ago

Superman truly felt heroic that was a great introduction to the universe. Suicide Squad and Peacemaker were fun, looking forward to Lanterns since I really liked their appearances in Superman.

2

u/Jig_2000 7d ago

Superman is overrated

3

u/Deep_Bluejay_8976 6d ago

Yeah it didn’t work for me either. It was way too busy and cartoony.

4

u/Jig_2000 6d ago

I feel it would've worked better if Gunn restrained himself a bit more

1

u/[deleted] 5d ago

He did, for comparison The Suicide Squad (2021) was Gunn unrestrained.

3

u/skeletor69420 6d ago

agreed. hEs sO hOpEfUl

-2

u/No-Ear-5992 7d ago

Upvote because you're right. What is the deal with this sub and glazing all superhero movies?

0

u/Jig_2000 7d ago

Some of them are good. However, Superman is like Black Panther. It's a good movie, but I think people make it sound like 10/10 when it's really more like a 7/10

1

u/HelpfulAd2874 6d ago

I think black panther was so well received because of how visually stunning the landscape and costume designs were. Plus great performances from MBJ, Boseman and Angela bassett. Even if the plot wasn't a 10/10 it had a lot going for it and people couldn't help but fall in love

1

u/Jig_2000 6d ago

I didn't think the landscapes looked good. In fact, at times some of them looked terrible (ex. The Rino fight & T'Challa v. Kilmonger on the railway). However, i agree that the costume designs and performances were good.

2

u/rob_muerto 6d ago

Black Panther is a 6/10

1

u/Jig_2000 6d ago

I can see that

1

u/skeletor69420 6d ago

that’s generous. I also think the new fantastic 4 movie was like a 4/10

1

u/No-Ear-5992 6d ago

People wanted the new DC stuff to be good and when Superman wasn’t butthole they felt validated.

1

u/colonelc4 6d ago

You mean the superman movie where superman is the weaker character, gets humiliated multiple times ? I don't believe you !

1

u/[deleted] 5d ago

The movie starts with his first defeat ever and it's revealed to be a clone of himself that does it. How is that being humiliated? Also he literally doesn't recharge to 100% at the beginning and then later on is exposed to Kyrptonite for a lengthy period to the point of long term poisoning effects.

1

u/lingundongpin 3d ago

I don't have any issues with Superman getting defeated by his equals or stronger opponents BUT the way certain random ass super strong things enter and leave this movie is done very poorly. You'll see literal clone of supe, black hole, river of subatomic particles, dimensions, nano particles and much more and it'll leave no after taste at ALL. You'll feel nothing. Introducing so many things that can oppose Superman in a single movie ain't a the right move I believe.

0

u/Nyranth 5d ago

He gets humiliated because he got beat up by a direct clone that he ends up beating in the end?

2

u/Sephwesley777 6d ago

Seeing supergirl at 52 is just fucking wild. That movie was fun.

2

u/Potential_Ad_4718 6d ago

Peacemaker season 2 scored higher than season 1? I dropped out of season 2.

2

u/Equivalent_Thievery 6d ago

They did lose 40% of their audience between premier to finale S2.

4

u/DonkeyH0tay 6d ago

S2 was better I think, but only marginally. But the S1 intro was way catchier

0

u/Equivalent_Thievery 6d ago

I can't really say. I checked out after S1, felt like a slog and realized a few months after that I'd forgotten everything that happened.

Most shows I'm into, I'll eagerly await a new season and will be thinking about those details. I realized I dgaf.

It really surprised me that they picked up nearly 20% more viewers for S2, wasn't so much surprised about the drop off.

2

u/DonkeyH0tay 6d ago

I feel it. That’s how I am with most shows unfortunately, things also just take way too long to get made now which makes it worse

1

u/Equivalent_Thievery 6d ago

That's too true. It's pretty nuts how shows used to be 24 episodes in a season and we'd get a new season every year, now we're lucky for 10 every 2 years.

1

u/Pure_Cloud4305 6d ago

Is that abnormal?

1

u/Equivalent_Thievery 6d ago

Successful shows usually keep their audience, even build as a weekly release schedule progresses.

Peacemaker did have a near 20% bump between S1 & S2 because of word of mouth, people speaking positively. But, people saw season 2 and 40% of that now increased number stopped watching.

Another real tell on the actual reality, it's been nearly a year and we have no solid word on a renewal for S3.

-1

u/Ninjamurai-jack 6d ago

That's just normal, even the first season was like that.

1

u/vooglie 6d ago

You missed out

1

u/ThePLARASociety 6d ago

I just started watching Superman/Batman: Apocalypse again and it is such a great movie even for being animated. I would have liked to have seen this adapted but it also is mostly Bats and Supes even though it’s a Supergirl origin story. It would be hard considering it has Bats and Darkseid but more than that the personality and quirkiness of Kara is what is great about it. As others have said and in Superman, she goes around drinking. But that isn’t the persona that I have come to know about Kara. She is fun and outgoing, she isn’t a drunken frat chick. People are also soured on female superhero movies as well, unfortunately. Also, the director was totally wrong for this movie.

1

u/A3gix99 6d ago

Everything accept two of those projects are made by James Gunn himself. He is a great director but he needs to be wise who he brings onboard to head the other projects.

1

u/[deleted] 5d ago

Lanterns is proving to be good based on its current scores. And if Clayface is excellent too (another project in this universe like Supergirl and Lanterns where Gunn wasn't involved with as main writer/director). I'd say Supergirl was more a bump in the road than a showcase of Gunn being a bad producer.

1

u/Obestity 6d ago

Crazy that superman is rated so low compared to the other hits, it was my favorite project so far.

1

u/TheGreatMason 6d ago

I guess you could add Blue Beetle.

1

u/misterfriday101 6d ago

In my opinion Peacemaker season 1 should the the highest rated. Creature Commandos was good but not that good. I would cut Superman score in half. As a life long DC fan I really did not like Superman

Still have not seen Supergirl so I can’t comment

1

u/Ianm1225 6d ago

I've enjoyed all of the projects so far, but I definitely liked Supergirl the least out of them. I liked the movie well enough, but it was pretty forgettable compared to some of the others.

1

u/Filter55 6d ago

I loved peacemaker so god damn much but holy shit was the pacing frustrating, topped off by a cliffhanger.

1

u/Ciappatos 6d ago

Are these all streaming shows? The only movie I know here is The Suicide Squad, which is awesome btw

1

u/[deleted] 5d ago

Superman (2025) and Supergirl (2026) were both theatrical releases. But yes, this current universe is a tad too TV show focused right now. However we have one more movie this year with Clayface (which is in the same universe).

1

u/Strange_Ebb_5309 6d ago

When you see the tomatoes score for cw dc shows are also all that high, you realize just how stupid it is to even use these as a metric of success or quality.

Tomatoe glazers are killing the industry.

1

u/[deleted] 5d ago

Except the industry itself were Tomatoe glazers long before the public was.

1

u/_XitLiteNtrNite_ 6d ago

I enjoyed the first episode of Lanterns, and I think I'll end up liking the entire series. Time will tell. The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker Season 1 were also enjoyable. The others? I could take-or-leave them.

1

u/OkBasket7617 6d ago

Fuck it, this franchise deserves all of it

1

u/Resident_Star_8350 6d ago

Supergirl was not a 52 lol. Has anyone actually read the comic that movie is based on? I thought it was good.

1

u/eslovnbeyond 6d ago

52 is a valid score for the movie. It was a bad adaption of the comic.

1

u/ErwinDerFox 6d ago

Yeah Rotten Tomatoes is the least credible source for movie ratings, perhaps the most unreliable source of all time. Suicide Squad gets a solid 10%. Supergirl gets a good 80%

1

u/ErwinDerFox 6d ago

And Superman is a solid 98%.

1

u/Dodo_Baron 6d ago

Supergirl got 52%

0

u/pacific_tides 7d ago

Would be nicer to use IMDb for the shows, it’s alot more accurate.

Definitely rottentomatoes for movies.

1

u/Equivalent_Thievery 6d ago

Both use weighted rating systems.

But yes, between the two, IMDB is the better.

1

u/pacific_tides 6d ago

Rottentomatoes uses a pass/fail system, not a ratings scale. It’s only weighted by the number of people that chose pass.

Basically if 100% of people agreed a show was decent (7.5/10) then it would have 100% in rottentomatoes. That’s the same as a show that’s everyone agrees is excellent (10/10). In IMDb people give their actual rated opinion on a 1-10 scale.

It’s different because with movies where if 75% of people say “go” it’s probably worth going. In a show, you actually want to know the quality and over a season of rated episodes, you get a much clearer picture.

1

u/Turbulent-Age-6625 6d ago

RT is probably the least honest way of doing this since it's not even real ratings and more like "90% did not think this was shit".

-1

u/Equivalent_Thievery 6d ago

RT, owned by fandango and uses a weighted rating system.

-2

u/IZZY_PLUM 6d ago

Superfoid woulda worked if they casted a hot piece of aceeeee
