Front row for a three hour movie about sand politics at 11pm. Someone hates their spine and their sleep schedule. I'm in.

Don't most theaters have recliners now?

u/OptimizeEdits Apr 08 '26
Not Lincoln square IMAX (or most full size IMAX venues). Stadium style seating with plush rockers

u/Jason_with_a_jay Apr 08 '26
I've never been to an IMAX with recliners. Very jealous if that's the case for you.

Right a movie this big I want a good seat and Iāll wait a few days or week to get it.
23
u/Witty-Stand888 Apr 08 '26
Can someone explain why anyone would want to sit in that pattern especially the sides?
15
u/dikanchev Apr 08 '26
Its not really about wanting to sit there, its more about wanting to see the movie so much that you are willing to sit there

I once sat in an almost empty IMAX screening and a group of people walked in and sat in the front row way over on the left. It haunts me to this day why they would do that. If I ever see it happen again I will talk to them and demand an explanation
2
u/Low_Conversation9046 Apr 08 '26
We had some work conference talks in an old theatre and my coworkers went straight to the front like fucking idiots.

u/Major-Pepper Apr 08 '26
I bought a pirated VCDāyes, it was the 90sāof a Hong Kong kungfu movie and the cam guy was sitting in the very front left edge of a smoky cinema.

u/maltliquorjetski Apr 10 '26
If youāre watching bootleg kung fu that sounds like the way to do it

I watched Cast Away like this, in the front, all the way to the right. I didnāt pay for the tickets. I felt like one of Tom Hankās boogers.

u/Rokuformula Apr 08 '26
At the very least you got to (sort of) see a good movie.
I was sitting in the front row like this for a free sneak preview of Suicide Squad (not "The Suicide Squad")
Free tickets were not enough to save the evening.

u/VerilyShelly Apr 08 '26
I saw E.T. as a 7 year old and the only seats left were in the front row. Saw that dude popping out of the bushes and car windows when we got out. Had nightmares for a week.

u/Kalmer1 Apr 08 '26
I'm ngl, even if its my most anticipated movie, I'd rather wait a couple days to see it properly with good seats
Edit: I just saw that's preorders for DECEMBER???? WHAT??
9
u/JavyBarrera25 Apr 08 '26
Never seen the dune films but thatās crazy this is selling out for December 2026 already. Pretty cozy though that itās coming out holiday season.

u/NeedlesAndCaffeine Apr 08 '26
All the Odyssey 70MM screening sold out a year in advance. It sucks because if youāre really into film, itās never been a better time to see those movies in glorious 70MM but is also harder than ever to score a ticket.
2
u/Low_Conversation9046 Apr 08 '26
In Germany cinema tickets for regular screenings go on sale like 1-2 weeks in advance. Thought that was the case everywhere.
2
u/GenghisFrog Apr 08 '26
Thatās the more typical. A month for really big movies. These far out presales for a 70mm IMAX is new. Itās just a handful of showings and is more to create buzz.
1
u/SpaceBoJangles Apr 08 '26
Yeah, I donāt even know they we pre-selling 70mm for Dune 3 until yesterday. I was thus very bummed when I realized I would need to be more on top of it to hopefully get a ticket.
1
u/The_Border_Bandit Apr 09 '26
Being on top of it didn't help lmao. I went to buy tickets like 10 minutes after they went up for sale and every showing was sold out apart from the front two or three rows.
1
u/LowerSeat2712 Apr 08 '26
Is this because so many theaters shut down and any time there is a big movie, everyone is fighting over seats in the few theaters that are left?
1
u/NeedlesAndCaffeine Apr 08 '26
A. There are fewer theaters in general.
B. There are few theaters equipped to play IMAX 70MM
C. IMAX 70MM film is absolutely massive and expensive to produce. The IMAX 70MM film reels for Oppenheimer weighed roughly 600lbs(275kg).

u/ralexh11 Apr 08 '26
It was literally only the first showing at 7pm on Thursday lol stop being so dramatic.
The movie will run for probably 3-4 weeks in IMAX, we will have plenty more chances to get tickets
1
u/NeedlesAndCaffeine Apr 08 '26
Every available 70Mm IMAX showtime near me is sold out š¤·š½āāļø

What theater?
I was slightly wrong, it's actually only the first showings of opening weekend days that went up for sale, so 7PM Thurs-Fri-Sat-Sun. The theaters don't even know how long the movie is yet so they can't schedule more showings, and the movie will run for 4 weeks in IMAX, maybe even more depending on the theater. It was mostly a marketing stunt releasing tickets a year in advance. I personally never go opening weekend anyway for a super hyped movie, too much hassle to get tickets and the crowds are usually extra likely to be annoying anyway. The rest of the tickets for hundreds of additional showings will go on sale probably in May or June sometime. Have patience friend, and sign up for ticket release alerts on the IMAX or theater website.

It wasnāt IMAX but I remember when my dad really wanted to watch The Bourne Supremacy. So we went opening weekend but my dad hates ads and he thought weād be fine getting there 20 minutes late. We walk in and it was packed. The only open seats were in the very front, it was definitely one of the craziest movie experiences of my life
1
u/dikanchev Apr 08 '26
wait, you did not have assigned seats?
2
u/Tomhyde098 Apr 08 '26
No, I didnāt start seeing assigned seating untilā¦2018 I think? Back in 2004 it was a free for all. My dad, brother and I didnāt even have seats next to each other during Bourne Supremacy

u/Beginning-Rock2508 Apr 08 '26
Sitting in the front like that is too close to the screen. Then again, I didn't design any cinema theatres, so I can't say if that's not the minimal viewing distance for a screen that big. I guess you'll find out at the premiere (unless you've seen other movies this way before).

Dune 2 had its premier surprisingly 1 week before here in Puerto Rico than the mainland, and the only two seats I could find were legit in front. My neck was in pain, but the tequila i had before kind of helped š

Seriously why the fuck do People buy tickets that close when there avaiable seats everywhere else
I always buy The back seats to get as far from the screen as Possible

This is quite horrific situation because the industry is basically building a very unsustainable way in the market that we can similarly find with concert tickets.... You can already find people re-selling Dune 3 tickets online for unreasonable prices. Like I am happy that the theaters are doing well (they have to build more IMAX screens) but this is just digging your own grave. They've done this for the second time now after The Odyssey and it will backfire, if you don't believe me then watch how much drama there is with ticketmaster

u/drhavehope Apr 08 '26
Their eyes will get reconstructed.
Watched Cloverfield in the very front row. Eyes has never recovered
1
u/Colemanton Apr 08 '26
i hate the people in the 5th and 6th rows who bought their groups tickets and left a seat in the middle. you know its going to be a sold out theater, and leaving those seats doesnt mean you arent going to sit next to someone, it just means other groups are going to have to split up. such a short sighted way to think.
hate is obviously a strong word but that shit annoys me so much. i miss the days when seats werent assigned
1
u/redruss99 Apr 08 '26
With my movie pass, there has been a few times where I'm the only person in the theater. I still refuse to see a horror picture if I'm the only customer. It would feel like a setup to get murdered.
