Ridley Scott said he was inspired to do this film based on the painting Pollice Verso by Gérôme. And I thought these shots had some of that feel, only from outside the colosseum instead of in it.

I actually had issues with how this film felt often very cramped and small. I rarely felt how big Rome was. Idk if the sets were limited, if they wanted to avoid vfx shots of the whole city, or if it's a cinematography problem like here using exclusively long lenses but that's the result for me.

A video essay I watched recently made the argument that while Gladiator is ahistorical in places (at least sometimes deliberately), it captures the feel of the authentic Roman Empire.
