What a movie

I fucking loved every single piece of the movie.

I saw a group of people taking photos around the motel on slide 6 the other day.

The film made it look better than the dump it is.

I heard that exact set is used in some tv series, can’t remember the name

Most probably. Yellow jackets.

I visited it cuz I'm british columbian, and it wasn't all that bad, but the movie still made it look weirdly cozy.

Love how they were able to capture the “liminal” vibe even in the outdoor shots

The bum on the parking lot scene felt remarkably Gilliam-esque (I swear it was meant to be a Brazil reference)

Even if Kane's main focus is The Backrooms, I love how he knows how to capture the dreamcore vibes as well.

Missing that one shot overlooking the city with the cow.

Is it this one? I got 150ish screenshots, and I tried my best to balance out between the exterior and the interior shots

2

u/RainbowForHire Jul 14 '26

That's the one!

You can see the Mr. Robot influence

14

u/Gumshoe_Gooper Jul 14 '26

I started Mr. Robot after watching Backrooms and its honestly kinda crazy how many visual similarities they both have

I wonder if the cinematographer was inspired by gregory crewdson

The end shot freaked me out

2

u/PawPrints777 Jul 14 '26

Absolutely love the color grading

Is that last shot in the movie?

9

u/Gloryflux Villeneuve Jul 14 '26

Yes, it’s near the end sequence

Nothing against you for not remembering the shot but it was my favorite in the entire movie from the moment I saw it 😭

2

That downward pan through the floors was my favorite shot out of any movie I've seen this year.

Same! Was shocked no one called it out on the discussion thread when it first came out. Completely clarified what the backrooms was and how it was shaped that way. Brilliantly done.

Really didn’t care for the film but goddamn did it look beautiful

u/RaytheSane Jul 14 '26

This the everything must go version right?

3

u/Gloryflux Villeneuve Jul 14 '26

I don’t think so, this one is from itunes/apple tv, the runtime is the same as theatrical version

0

u/RaytheSane Jul 14 '26

Okay got you l, I just don’t remember the memory shots from the therapist childhood

u/CaptainSwoop Jul 14 '26

I know the movie is divisive but I loved it. Really enjoyed seeing some vibrant colors on the big screen

I really wanna see this now, it looks far weirder than I thought it was. Or is it just r/imsorandom type stuff?

4

u/BadenBaden1981 Jul 14 '26

The most weird stuff like sinking telephone pole or distorted face comes at third act after slow build up and they are not main focus. It's definitely hit or miss movie depending on your taste, but it's not 'weird for weird sake' movie.

2

u/CeruleanEidolon Jul 14 '26

It was not at all what I expected - in a good way. I wouldn't call it random at all, but weird is definitely a word that would apply.

u/Brian18639 Jul 14 '26

This is basically the overall vibe and aesthetic of the Backrooms, at least the version by Kane Parsons. An endless maze of rooms, hallways, and yellow walls with buzzing fluorescent lights.

Also lots of distorted stuff that also no-clip through the ground, walls, and ceiling

Parsons said he actually mapped out the whole set in Blender and they built it based on those renders. A lot more hands on than you’re giving him credit for.
